I listened to a McFeely/Izzo podcast where, after the obligatory AC fawning, they addressed this issue. By their count, UND has had the third-lowest number of players entering the portal among MVFC teams since season's end at 10. The AC has had fewer at 6. SDSU at 4. Murray State has had 42 portal entries. Youngstown 26, Indiana State 20,  USD 15, SIU and MoState 13, and N. Iowa 12.

Some other schools are currently still in spring ball.  One can assume there will be movement when that wraps up.

  2. With all the changes to the season tickets and uncertainty on the year I am guessing there is a decline in renewals this year.  Not a great decision by the athletic dept.

Don’t hate the playa hate the game!

When a player leaves, begs to come back and leaves again it is acceptable to question the player…..not the game.

I hope his third transfer goes as well as his first.

And then guess what good coaches do….. they acquire good talent out of the portal again. Or they find a way to retain their players.

It’s not a very hard concept to understand. Sure it may suck for fans to see some players leave, but like @GoodGood said, good coaches figure it out and not good coaches make excuses.

    Great argument.

Tell me more about dropping your season tickets for football.   When things suck for fans they stop going to games costing the schools money.

Mid major fans need to calm down about the portal. Always complaining about the talent they lose, but never acknowledge the talent acquired because of the portal. The portal works both ways. Good coaches figure it out, bad coaches make a million excuses on why they can’t

All so that acquired talent can leave the following year.

    Let's not get it twisted.

BJ is NOT just "leaving for the money". Sure, the money part is a nice added bonus for moving up a level. But that is not the reason BJ is leaving so not sure what the "tougher questions" are that you feel need to be asked.

Opportunity for money is playing no part in it?

Good point.  UND was better this year, yes.

But, SDSU, NDSU and ORU were all worse.  UMKC was better but flaked out in tourney.  St Thomas was about same.

Isn’t that the story of any low major conference?   Transfer portal and NIL are only going to make this more frequent in the coming years.

Because I said I hope she doesn't waste her talent here ???? You criticize the coach and team too ! She is a great player and I don't have any confidence in our coach will surround her with good talent. Hasn't proved it yet.  If she doesn't live in grand forks she wouldn't choose und. Some times you need to be realistic and not live in the clouds

But she did so let’s hope she’s a talent we can build around.

It would be interesting to see the coaching salary table by conference for all of our major sports.. Hockey.. football.. Mens Basketball.. Womans Basketball.

That would be interesting to look at.

Also would be interesting to see when each of those coaches in Tom’s article were hired and where the salaries at time of hire ranked in conference.

Certainly work to do but likely doesn’t change until new staff is brought in board.  Going rate is much higher but facilities actually in place and not on paper should help recruiting a new coach.

If/when they start competing for conference championships and winning playoff games, all the coaches will be taken care of.

Facilities are equally…….possibly more important in getting/retaining the athletes that can compete for conference championships.

Tom should do a fancy table comparing facilities.  I bet the same two schools would be at the top but UND is positioned to be much more favorable.

....and our coach would be making more if he had accomplished more.

Or if he wanted to accept more and didn’t redirect it to his coaching staff.

Chaves said there have been discussions over time on giving Schweigert a raise, but the coach has declined in order to spread the money elsewhere. Schweigert has been head coach at UND since 2014.

so we are looking at giving bubba a raise? Lol can’t make this stuff up

There are coaches making more that have accomplished less.

  13. After the facilities are complete Chaves certainly has work to do regarding salaries.   Would be interesting to see how the recent new hires compare to what was replaced.

I’d rather have the facilities first as that is what recruits care about but an argument could be made the other way I suppose to check the boxes in the article.

Defense has been awful the past couple seasons. Team is awful on the road and after big games. Can’t advance in the playoffs when they do happen to sneak in. That is not the offensive coordinator’s fault, but rather the head ball coach (who is supposed to be a defensive guy).

Offensive coordinators play calling post NDSU deserves no blame??

Agreed Fargo media is so biased it’s not even funny

now the forum has a drive for 5. They want 5 thousand people for hall

where was the heralds attendance push

The UND athletic dept didn’t need to supply the media with knee pads to get fans to the games.
