As a UND fan, such a move by NDSU would be a wonder to behold. But even NDSU's leadership isn't that publicly hypocritical and they certainly aren't that stupid (their fans are, though ). First off, NDSU is part of the NDUS, which is what is suing the NCAA. NDSU is not going to antagonize Hoeven, or Stenehjem, or the Legislature. Second, if NDSU publicly stated they wouldn't schedule UND because of the nickname (granted, Amy Ruley and Lynn Dorn are probably in favor of this), the firestorm of bad publicity among state residents would cause anti-NDSU sentiment. UND is winning the public relations war: the public overwhelming supports UND vs. the position of the NCAA. UND has a very good chance of becoming a folk hero among sports fans because of not backing down when confronted with the Goliath, the NCAA. A positive verdict next January in court will bring a tremendous amount of good press to UND. If we lose the case, the name gets changed.

Aerospace and biomedical engineering are often considered specialities in mechanical engineering, although biomedical affiliates with electrical and sometimes chemical. To meet course requirements in engineering disciplines require course work in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, so those three disciplines are needed in any engineering school. Those two programs normally have very little overlap, although polymers and coatings can be a specialty within some chemical engineering departments (and in certain mechanical engineering departments). Chemical engineering is much broader (basically applied physical chemistry) and NDSU has no capability in it that any certifying organization would recognize. You may be surprised at this: So the designated location of the North Dakota School of Engineering and Mines, per the ND Constitution, is Grand Forks. (Much as the home of the South Dakota School of Engineering and Mines is Rapid City, and home of the Colorado School of Engineering and Mines [Colorado Mines] is Golden.) BTW, industrial and manufacturing engineering are far from "classical" programs. Perhaps the geology department with the civil and mechanical engineering deparments.

http://www1.ncaa.org/finance/5-yr_conf_sum...al_Dist2006.htm The table above gives the total revenue disbursement by the NCAA to the DI conferences. The Mid-Con gets the least amount of any DI conference. When television, tournament, and BCS payments are also added in, most major conferences have a total income well beyond $100 million. The SEC in turn disburses each of its member schools in excess of $10 million. After covering for operating expenses (salaries, officials), a conference like the Mid-Con disburses less than $100 k per school, from my understanding. Some of the posters believe that UND's men's team has a much better chance at a National Championship this year: more number one swimmers in more events. Previous years, UND was probably the top DII dual team, but not the top invite team. College Swimming Message Board

In 2008, is a 12 game season allowed for DIAA (FCS) because of the calendar weeks after Labor Day?
-
With the Horizon swim teams being down to UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, UI-Chicago, Wright State, and Cleveland St, and Youngtown St (for women only), UND swim teams would be good geographic fit as a swimming affiliate.

Quite the endorsement of Bettman here: This respected blogger Tire to fire Bettman believes contraction is inevitable.

With the difficulty that NDSU has been having getting home games, UND may very well experience the same difficulty begining in 2008. With the Southland adding a team (Central Arkansas) and the Gateway almost certainly adding NDSU and SDSU (Chapman will be in St Louis in February not to apply but to accept the invitation, IMHO), schools in those two conferences will need many fewer games. Getting to 7 FCS games, the criteria to be a counter for FCS opponents, will be a major chore. UNI probably wouldn't come to Grand Forks until the game is a counter. If the FCS went to 12 games in 2008, that would help UND. In the meantime, teams almost definitely on UND's 2008 schedule would include: UC-Davis Cal Poly Southern Utah South Dakota and very likely most if not all the members of the new GNAC football conference, which need games badly, C Washington W Washington Dixie St Humboldt St W Oregon

The Herald editorial this morning states the endowment is now $165 M.

Butler drops men's lacrosse: Butler drops men's lacrosse and men's swimming Butler drops lacrosse Women's lacrosse has been added at major schools like South Carolina, Miami, Florida, Louisville, and Cincinnati, but men's lacrosse loses a school With the Great Western Lacrosse League now down to six schools (Denver, Air Force, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Bellarmine, and Quinnipiac), it needs another men's school when Q finds another league.

Again, Lennon makes a classy decision.

Connect the dots, goo: Read the previous post by Rick Martinsen installed as a lieutenant in the DI move up Goal of $500 million endowment by 2009 now seems acheiveable according to CEK (with the endowment now only at $160 mill and rising at $10-20 mill/yr, that half billion goal would ordinarily seem laughable) So are there philanthropic billionaire-type UND grads (not the Engelstads) out there who have a lot of trust in Martinsen?

Congratulations to Corey!

The Forum actually got something right today (and here I had lambasted them just yesterday ) Editorial: UND's BRIDGES pours gas on logo fire
-
In Kupchella's public statements yesterday as reported on WDAZ, CEK stated that "most of the heavy lifting, most of what we need to do to get through the (Division I) transition will be completed in the coming year". So what does that mean? Funding? Endowment? Facilities? Conference? All of them?

No. The Billings paper has confirmed the Quesenberry commitment but not Van Zee. http://www.billingsgazette.net/articles/20...quesenberry.txt The Montana State board scoop is that offensive lineman are not being recruited by MSU this year, so neither Montana State or Montana were options.
-
Martinsen also co-wrote an impassioned letter to Kupchella requesting UND move up to DI. Kupchella responded with the now infamous letter (at least in Bisonville), in which CEK stated that "I want you to know that I hate the idea that NDSU even appears to be making a move ahead of us in any way whatsoever, perhaps as much as you do - even for a little while." That letter sent the Chapmanesque kingdom into overdrive in their hatred of UND, courtesy of the Forum and their propaganda machine. Interesting that UND is giving Martinsen substantial responsibility in this move. Apparently, Martinsen et. al. are capable of backing up their words with action, money, and resources.

Perhaps a former governor, who is now on the UND Foundation board, would consider?

U of Montana has very few scholarships opening up this year (seven scholarships, according to eGriz), some of which will be out-of-state. This recruiting year provides a unique opportunity to gain Montana talent.

Two from Billings West? The Montana State message board, Bobcatnation, lists Deryk Van Zee, Billings West receiver and punter, as a probable to UND.

The newspaper in Charleston, Illinois (home of Eastern Illinois), is hopeful that SIUE joins EIU in the Ohio Valley Conference. EIU, which is on the northern extreme the Ohio Valley conference, left the Gateway (and MidCon) largely because its football wasn't competitive with the other Illinois schools. The MidCon would be a much better destination for SIUE, as it would be in the geographic center of the MidCon, it would offer better rivals (WIU, UMKC), and especially if the MidCon tournament gets placed in St. Louis. SIUE to the Ohio Valley ?

Agreed for a year or two while people are interesting in checking out the new building, especially with the poor amenities and seating at the BSA.
-
UND's non-conference schedule also was full of NSIC and DAC teams. NDSU men should be very competitive the next two years, but playing Centenary, Oakland, IUPUI, IPFW, Southern Utah, and Western Illinois won't exactly get people lining up to buy tickets. SDSU had some decent mid-major teams that are a notch higher caliber, Montana St, Central Florida, Utah State, and Arkansas State, and yet those teams didn't draw. As much as the capacity of the Betty has been criticized, it will serve the transition well. At NDSU and SDSU, there was no incentive to buy season tickets because seats are readily available. At UND with the Betty, season tickets purchases are more likely to continue due to the limited seating.
