I hate painting, and I am not good at it, but at a time like this maybe it would be the thought that counts and not the quality of the paint job. Goldie painted with a Holy Cross jersey, pictured in the sports section of the Red Star Tribune, would be priceless.

Absolutely beautiful. That statue of Goldie looks like it could use a midnight paint job involving some purple??? Have we got any artists in the twin cities up for a challenge?

I received an additional response from Sommer Lockhart at The Ralph about tailgating. Obviously no the response I was hoping for.

We hadn't talked much about that one. We might have to find some place away from campus with all of the homecoming activities. Maybe we can just set up at the Alerus after the football game. We can discuss that at the tailgating party prior to the Manitoba game. I was also kind of wondering about the Stanford band, after reading about them in another thread, being available for one of our tailgating parties!! And just in case anyone was wondering, Holy Cross jerseys are very welcome at the tailgating parties.
-
Hmmm. If the Tree is part of the band, that band members urinating on the field business could be a trumped up charge. It seems plausible that they were just watering Tree.

These are preseason estimates: 1. BC - because they are out east, and WI has lost much of their scoring from last year. 2. UMN - Because of hype of recruits, unless there is a Holy Cross hangover. I expect them to falter early in the season, and then begin to rise. How far they rise by the end of the year is debatable. Depends on their goalies. 3. WI - Because they were the champs last year. I believe that they will go downhill from there. 4. Mich - Because the pollsters like Red Berenson, and they were hyped last year as a young skilled team. 5. UND - Because of respect for the program. I disagree that the Gopher defense was key in their winning streak last year. They had the offense flying high, which kept other teams from mounting much of any offense. That took the pressure off their defense and their goaltending. It was when they started playing better teams in the playoffs that could shutdown some of their offense that the defensive and goaltending weaknesses reappeared. The best defense is a great offense, until that offense falters. When the Gophers were on their hot streak, they were skating and flying, with their defense pinching at every opportunity. They got away with it for a while. When they suddenly lost that offensive magic, their defense kept pinching and got burned. As a result, their play going into the playoffs was much more tentative and had lost its confidence. Prime example: giving up 8 goals to SCSU, a team with good goaltending and weak offense, in the WCHA tournament. This year, I believe that the Gophers will be better defensively (they had better be with that goaltending), but weaker offensively. Overall still a good team. Overall, preseason means nothing but speculation. End of the season counts and I expect the Sioux to be up there.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether they know anything or not. My opinion is that Hakstol has earned my respect and trust until he proves it is no longer deserved. It is his program to run; and only ours to enjoy, agonize over, and celebrate as the moment dictates. Dane Jackson has a ringing enorsement from those who have worked with him. He deserves the chance, simply because Hakstol says so. And finally, TheTriouxper supports the choice. 'Nuff said.

Definitely a great read, and yes it rekindled the memories and the emotions.

It would seem that the explanation may be in the early part of the notice. The NCAA requires the FAR to have faculty responsibilities which Harmesan does not have. You would not want to go into the transition with a question about whether you are compliance with NCAA requirements. It could be that he was given a choice of reducing his current responsibilities so that he could assume some faculty responsibilities to be in compliance, or let someone else take that specific role. It also states that the FAR cannot be in an administrative role within the athletic area. I agree his experience is valuable for the transition, and it still is likely to be in effect without him being the official FAR.

Am I missing something here, or does this really say what I think it does? Because he went lower in the draft he turned pro, but if he had gone 1 or 2 he would still be with the Gophers? He would have been less desirable by the pros at a higher pick? Someone must have gone without sleep for several days to come up with that one.

My not-so-scientific gut-check impression is: 1. WI, unless u-no-who leaves. Then they drop to the bottom five. 2. UND, A couple of months ago I wouldn't have thought this, but now it is possible. 3. UM, look for early season struggles, then better. Lucia too good of a coach. 4. SCSU, good goalie and they made great strides last year. 5-6. UMD/Denver toss up. Gwoz takes a header off the dasher. 7. CC 8-10. Take your pick, it doesn't matter. It has been an up and down summer, as the wheel turns with the early departures and non-departures (spell that Toews). My thoughts on possible finishes changed almost by the week for a while. So, this is it at the moment.

As a victim of having a player slide into me from behind three separate times while coaching kids, I can certainly understand the rule. Twice my head hit the ice, and the third time I got my hand back there in time so all I did was sprain a thumb. None of the three times was a pleasant experience. Looking back at it now, it would have been a smart thing to be wearing a helmet.

I get blamed for everything.

Did you tell him the date where they would be on the lookout if we don't submit a request? It might be a little late to just do it. Is there an alternate site if we were to get turned down, say the Alerus Center lot, PCM's rodent free garage, etc. as a backup plan? Since it is state land, we might get permission only if it is alcohol free (not a chance on that one).

So is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Comparing the football and hockey schedules, it appears that the other possibilities are the weekend against Maine, Oct 21 and against St. Cloud on Nov 4. Oct 7th is Homecoming, Oct 28th is a football home game (UMD). Then Nov. 11th is a home football game (USD) and then come the playoffs. It depends on whether the SiouxSports hockey faithful also go to the football games. Any way, there appear to be two other strong candidates for tailgating, Oct. 21 and Nov. 4th. Any other thoughts out there? P.S. I guess I wasn't aware if anyone asked permission when we did it last spring. It was rather spur of the moment, so I doubt it. If anyone asks I just tell them TheTriouxper was in charge.

Here is the response that I received from The Ralph concerning having a tailgating area near the arena:
-
Should be right next to the Lutefisk.

There are many interesting thoughts as to where the "Frogs" moniker came from. The British called the French frogs in the 1700's (I watched Horatio Hornblower on A&E). I did a little internet search and found this: That doesn't seem particularly overly derogatory, but maybe there is some other meaning that developed over the years. If you go to www.askjeeves.com and type in "Why are the French called frogs?" you will get a number of web sites with widely varying guesses as to the source of frogs. Surprisingly, some of the people indicate that they consider it as a positive comment, and not derogatory at all. Maybe in Canada it evolved from its original usage to now mean something else. I worked at Frenchy's while in college (he is Canadian) and various people would call him Frog. I never saw him indicate that he considered it an insult, but maybe he did.
-
Will definitely be there. 52 days to go! I wonder what the possibility would be of The Ralph having an area designated for tailgating prior to Sioux games? Maybe they never thought of it because of the winter weather, but there are surely times in October, November, March, and possibly other months where it wouldn't be a hypothermia risk. I plan to pass on the suggestion to them.
-
Why would they trash the best source of information around (real and not-so-real). Even when its wrong it is usually worth talking about.

How do you display you are a Sioux fan?

Try it with the lid down once in a while just to add a little variety. -

I have three Sioux decals on my pickup, and a Sioux cover for the receiver hitch. At work I have two mounted Sioux pucks, a model airplane from the Aviation group, my Alumni Century Club plaque on the wall. Then there is my checkbook cover with the Fighting Sioux Logo, leather jacket, jersey, and numerous shirts, sweatshirts, etc. We bought our kids Fighting Sioux Christmas stockings plus their jerseys, caps, etc. AND, my oldest son (Morley) sports a Fighting Sioux tatoo! -
Games are August 12th-18th.
