It makes no sense at all. I turned the television on this morning and the first thing I was was a cartoon showing buildings going up in fireballs. I turned the channel and there was another cartoon show. The animated figures wearing body armour and loaded down with weapons were shooting and killing each other. Are we desensitizing ourselves to the reality of what what happens when you blow up a building or shoot another person? Is there no thought of the consequences of our actions?

Didn't know her, never read her work but somehow I feel as if she were a part of my hockey 'family'. Words elude me. Just last month, on her blog, Redfield described the scene at the Eaton Centre mall in Toronto after a gunman began shooting in the food court. I can't get this odd feeling out of my chest. This empty, almost sickening feeling won't go away. I noticed this feeling when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto just seconds before someone opened fire in the food court. An odd feeling which led me to go outside and unknowingly out of harm's way. I have over 10,000 posts on this forum and the majority were made in support of the Fighting Sioux name and logo. I wasn't alone. You would be hard pressed to find anyone on this board and only a small percentage among fans/alumni/current or past athletes who do not love the tradition and history of our name and logo. But it's time to say good-bye. I don't know you, pivetz, but I recognize your heart and fervor. Our fight, UND's fight, is done. Our support is with our current and future student athletes and our desire that they be allowed to compete against the best, in the best venues including our own. Your fight, now, is with with NC$$ and their policy against NA names and logos.

As much as I love our name and logo, I know our student athletes and athletic programs are more important.

Your comment, bolded above, is sooooo wrong, I am compelled to respond. The majority of us on this site, the student athletes, the alumni and fans of the Fighting Sioux name and logo have not wanted to retain the name and logo because it is an 'abstract, cartoon'. We who love the name and logo know it represents soooo much more. I'm not going to take the time to write it all down, it would take to long and, I think, would make me cry. The save the name crowd is doing more than fighting to keep the name and logo, they are defying the NC$$'s actions in an attempt to preserve the right to free speech, to govern ourselves and to demand they adhere to their Mission statement to 'Respect institutional autonomy and philosophical differences'. It is not the NC$$'s role to become it's memberships' social conscience, to demand that we goose step to the beat of their drum, or to force us to conform to what they determine is right or wrong. The NC$$'s role is to protect student athletes from explotation, enforce academic standards, ensure safety on the field/ice, etc. It was never the intent of the 'founding fathers' that the NC$$ was to evolve into the social consciences of its' membership. I abhore the control they have over college athletic programs. BUT, until something is done to 'put them back in their place', the NC$$ has us by the short ones and I'm voting yes

I hate, hate, hate doing this but I will be voting yes. I will not purposely do anything that will or potentially will hurt our student athletles. But, please, please, God don't let the PC crowd stick us with a stupid name just for the sake of having a name. I have nightmares about being stuck with names like the Prairie Dogs, Mosquitos, Flood Waters, etc. I prefer the University of North Dakota to the UND Hoo Haas,

Your post brings to mind Andy Schneider. He was interviewed after the Sioux played for third place at the Final Five. I don't remember the exact quote but paraphased,he said, 'It doesn't matter if we're playing for first place or third place. We're playing for the tradition of the program and the crest on our chest.' There was more but I don't remember it all. Don't look for our boys to hold back....ever.
