I disagree. That loss was one factor that kept us out. I disagreed with playing them before we were ready. That was Bubba's decision. Faison discussed it with UND FB alumni before he agreed to schedule the game. A lot of the older guys wanted to resume the series. A lot of guys didn't want to under the terms offered by the AC. Bubba stood up and said he wanted to schedule them. My feeling was if the coaches want to play it, and can get our kids ready then we should support the coach. We obviously were not ready. The fact is if we play and beat any other FCS team we are in. You don't need to get your butt kicked to measure where we are. Most knowledgeable fans and certainly the coaches should have been able to make that clear. Losing a playoff selection isn't worth that measuring stick. To blame Bartles for 3 losses isn't fair to Bartels. He didn't lose those games, he was the QB in 2 games we lost and part of a third. Studsrud was QB against the AC but it wasn't his fault we got our but kicked. Why were either Weber or Idaho still in those games in the 4th quarter? We had 14 point leads. If we are a playoff team we need to put those games away. We do that in either game and we are in despite the loss to the AC. There were 10 other guys on offense and our defense and special teams who also should have played better. I think by the end of the year Studsrud was arguably the most improved player on the team. He wasn't much of a factor in the earlier games other than he was adequate and wasn't a negative factor. These last 3 games and especially the last 2, he was near perfect. He was a positive factor and potential difference maker. The oline gave him plenty of time to throw. Had they done that for him earlier in the year I think he could have done the same thing. Had they done that for Bartels we probably win those 2 games. It is a team game and I think the loss of Reyes was a bigger factor than the loss of Studsrud. Lastly, the win against Wyoming wasn't such a positive factor cuz they were terrible. The blow out losses to the AC and to Montana where we couldn't even compete were big negative factors. We controlled our own destiny and screwed the pooch. We need to focus on the things we can control. I think we deserved to get in but these things happen when you put yourselves on the "bubble". We made progress this year. The guys we have returning and coaches need to keep improving, we need to continue improving our recruiting and we need to get phase 2 of our new facility done. We made strides this year. On selection day next year, the talk shouldn't be about whether we get in but who we play and whether or not we have a first round bye.

Ok, that's valid. We lived in the dorms with other students and FB and Hockey players hung out with other students. If they are acting like jerks then Bubba needs to be made aware and have a quick come to Bubba meeting. I don't think he will tolerate that. We never posted pictures cuz there were no pictures to post and no way to post them. I was never ripped enough to even think of that ,but my wife thought I was cute and had a nice butt. Unfortunately she doesn't remember thinking that. Athletes and students hung out together and socialized together. We also supported each other at our respective sports. How the hell are they going to get through school if you smart normal guys don' t help them???

That is how the "snake pit" started many years ago. It was a combo of a handful of FB players and Sigma Chis who went to the JV games to watch friends play. No one else was there so whatever you yelled at the refs or opponents was pretty clear. It morphed into a regular group at the varsity games. Later included hockey and baseball. Eventually the SAE's took over. It lasted quite awhile. We could usually piss off the subs by asking if the coach promised them a good seat on the bench when they were recruited. Dana Powers and Paul Gravelle were NCC refs and easy targets. A few years later i had a couple of beers with them and they were laughing about all of the stories and crap they took from the Snake Pit over the years. When I was in Desert Storm 20 years later, Ryan Bakken wrote an article in the GFHerald someone sent to me. You guys can turn your section into a difference maker for Sioux athletics.

I don't sit in the suites and I don't believe most of those who do care what the students do as long as they don't impede their ability to see the game. For that much money you should be able to feel comfortable. There was a time when at MBB there was a "Snake Pit" behind the visitors bench that caught the attention of the visiting players and coaches. No F-bombs or racial slurs. The people there could usually get the bench players laughing or pissed off or both. Most coaches would talk to the fans before the game, the refs knew those fans. It was pretty funny and the oposition didn't like playing at UND. It could be ruthless for the oppostition but didn't have to be crude. Eventually the NCC officials enacted a rule that the first couple of rows behind the visitors bench had to be given to the visitors fans. Dumb rule but there was a time when most fans were simply UND fans who attended MBB then went to the hockey games and it wasn't common practice to use that langauge. FB fans especially, the WBB players used to be directly behind the visitors bench and the student fans were loud enough to be noticed. They pissed off the visitors and they made enough noise to disrupt the opposition play calling. After the MBB the same fans would head over to the hockey game and harass the refs and opposition there. That is the reason I guess I care if students go. Up to them, but they can be part of the success of our programs just like they have been in the past for all of our sports. I think FB attendence will improve when fans again become part of the game experience. The players notice and appreciate it in all sports. It also makes a difference in the game atmosphere for all sports. Intercollegiate athletics can make the college experience a lot more fun for most students but they need to get involved. The solution will come from students who want things to get better and an administration that realizes how important intercollegiate sports can be to the University with regards to recruiting of non-athletic students and donations from area businesses and alumni. Administration also needs to recognize the importance of student support and listen to the ideas and suggestions from students to help create an improved game atmosphere. We need more butts in the seats at MBB, WBB, VB and FB. We also need to avoid becoming complacent in hockey cuz we can lose our edge there very quickly and it can be very difficult to get it back. We can't demand students show up, we have to sell them on the idea that this can be a great time. I didn't mean to offend you but I do think the crude cheers show a lack of intelligence and thought. Anyone can come up with that crap after a few too many beers. It doesn't take much more energy to be clever and entertaining. We may disagree, I just think we can do better.

There was nothing in my post about when this started. The fact that we have fans acting like morons for that long doesn't make it correct. I don't bring my kids to games, but being that this is a college event, is it asking to much to expect that we show common courtesy to those who may bring their kids to games or to those who don't wish to hear crude language screamed by UND fans? If you are screaming F-bombs sitting next to me, you won't remain at the game whether there are kids there or not. Has nothing to do with family values, it has to do with common courtesy and have been raised by people who taught us how to act in public. The fact that vulgar cheers didn't corrupt you, has nothing to do with it. I wouldn't expect foul language to "corrupt" anyone. Most people find it offensive. I can act like a moron too, but I try and make sure it doesn't infringe on the rights of those around me to expect me to know how to act in public. I have been a student and around college students who were much better at harrassing opposing teams and officials without being crude. You happen to disagree and I guess if that is what the majority of people in society today are comfortable with, then I'm in the minority. As far as the patty cake comment, on this blog then I also guess I'm not as tough as some of you guys. I don't happen to like the "who's he chant" but I think the f-bombs cross the line. The "who's he" chant is there cuz we aren't smart enough to come up with anything clever.

UND students were weak this year at FB games and they were pathetic last night at the hockey game. The students who came to FB were loud but there weren't enough of them. Students at hockey were there in numbers, but nothing creative nor original come has out of these students in quite some time. The students used to be able to fire up the athletic teams. Now it takes the team to fire up the crowd. How did we "dumb down" our student fans? They show such a lack of class with the "who's he, he sucks sh#*" at the beginning. Have students become so shallow that they can't do better? I doubt they are studying rather than going to campus activities. Other than drinking what are they doing? Do the students participate in any campus activities other than hockey anymore?

Santiago is special. UND students are missing some great entertainment.

Studsrud is perfect so far. Best he has looked. Labat pick 6 second play of game.

how many points?
-
I'm not sure of details. There were matching funds of $1 for $3 if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if all 35 million was earmarked for business
-
I believe there is ample evidence that the unanimous $35,000,000 came from Mr Barry. He is extremely generous and has been to UND. The Barry Family Foundation also funds the area Philanthropy and Youth project. They give $5000 to area high schools. The students attend training at Micosoft then interview worthy charities in their communities and choose where it goes. Recently expanded to offer $5000 college scholarships to students who are participating . The $35,000,000 to the Spirit Campaign was written almost exactly like his other donations.

One game at a time. As a coach you might if you have time after you are prepared for UNC. If you don't beat UNC, the Cal Poly game is only for pride. Players look only at UNC film and prepare for UNC.

Calling the Bluff - Nickname and Donations
iramurphy replied to NoiseInsideMyHead's topic in UND Nickname
The key to new gear will be the logo. The key to the Fighting Sioux gear was the logo. The fact that most Americans don't like the government interfering with our freedoms and arguably the best logo in all of Sports had more to do with the fuss than being the Fighting Sioux. Stopping donations to UND over the logo issue is rather short sighted and not the most mature. Diverting donations to the.Marching Band is a great idea because of the importance of our band to our game experience. Stopping donations makes a statement to whom? Kupchella? Gone. Kelly? Will be gone. The NCAA? Faison? Soon gone. They could care less. All you do is harm our athletic teams and our University. Just like the NCAA and the Tribal Councils and activists. You wish to be on their side? Maybe think that through. -
Look. If your argument is always going to be anything I say is because I'm biased about Mollberg it then I guess you should block my posts. I'm not the one getting angry over nothing. I simply listed the first starts. I said you can't really compare because of Fr vs Soph vs Jr and also the surrounding cast. I was basically complimentary about Stick not Mollberg. It seems clear that some apply different standards to evaluate kids based on our bias. You are no different. There is no reason to get upset about throwing out first starts. The kid with the best first start was Bartles. My comments on this issue have lumped Bartels and Mollberg together as to the issues and hurdles they have faced in their 2 years of playing time. Claiming they didn't have a running game or oline doesn't make them any better or worse and claiming Studsrud doesn't have receivers doesn't make him better or worse. Homer brought out a good point and that is that the Stick kid had similar stats in his first start that we are seeing on some of the games from Studsrud and questioned why do some call for him to be replaced when the Bison fans are praising Stick. He has a good point. Why would it bother anyone if I throw out each of the kids first games. They are what they are and Studsrud is a much better player now than when he started. I may have an opinion you don't agree with and I may not agree with yours but there is no reason to get pissy cuz I raised an issue. This is just a blog with a bunch of rubes who probably should be doing something more productive with our time. I have the afternoon off however. As the drill Sgt said: "lighten up Francis". Make your case but don't get your grundies in a bunch. We have no say in any of this. I want whomever is going to raise the level of play of those around him and improve our chance of restoring pride and success to this program. That is more important than who you or I think should be the guy.
-
I listed the first starts. I had no criticism or comment. I'm impressed with Stick. We are way beyond first starts for all 3 of our guys. Someone else wants to use Stick's first game and compare with Studsrud in his second season. I don't think you can compare the 2 especially given that Studsrud was a true freshman and none of our guys had a supporting cast like Stick does. I agree. I simply listed the first starts of all 4 without comment. What did Shakespere say? "Methinks thou doth protest too much". I listed stats from each guy's first game. No more, no less and no comment. We seem to have comparisons for our 3 guys all of the time. That is OK as long as we always consider Studsrud played as a true freshman and Mollberg and Bartels played as redshirt freshmen. I don't care how old they are now, our guys are all are experienced QB's and if we have to make excuses for them being freshmen or sophs, then we have a problem because we are making excuses. We always point out that we don't have good receivers or an oline that is still developing when Studsrud struggles, but if Mollberg or Bartels struggled or struggles, it is because they are terrible. We don't mention the dropped passes, poor routes, coaching issues when those two were freshmen and sophs, nor the coaching staff change for Mollberg and Bartels at the end of their RFr years. I may not be quite as good as you seem to be, because I look at what we could be and should be and I have an opinion as to how we can get there. It is no more valid than your opinion or anyone elses. I also have not laid the blame for the losses on the QB nor credited the QB with the wins. That is your opinion. I simply disagree and if they makes me less than I should be, I guess that's on me. But laying out the stats isn't "bull".
-
they aren't seeing anything with Joe cuz they aren't looking at him. It would be difficult for them if he is given a chance and plays well. How would they explain burying him on the depth chart?
-
I understood you to compare the Bison kid with Studsrud. My point was to compare their first starts. If I'm coaching I want to the QB who can lead, can read defenses, can direct an offense, can make all the throws and is athletic enough to escape trouble. Many others do the same. We don't know what Joe would do this year. We have seen what Studsrud and Bartels have done. Hopefully they will continue to get better. You can bet the Bison kid will.
-
I'm not arguing, if all you look at is wins and losses the Bison kid is undefeated. Studsrud and Mollberg lost their first starts, Bartels won his. Studsrud is injured. They apparently aren't going to let Mollberg play. Therefore Bartels is our guy. I have watched our three guys play. I haven't seen the AC kid play, but what is your point? The kid had a successful start for them. I mentioned that a QB success depends on your supporting staff. It also depends on your opponent. I believe the Bison kid has a big upside and they expect a lot from him. They did a nice job of developing Johnson and Wentz. We haven't done quite so well with our kids. I believe the AC kid is bigger and faster than any of our guys. They believe he has a strong arm, certainly stronger than Bartels or Studsrud. Of course they are excited about him. Our 2 guys this year don't seem to have the same potential.
-
I certainly supported hiring Bubba. I disagree that there was no talent with the kids who were here. They maybe don't all fit the philosophy of the new staff though. Gene Murphy turned a woeful program around in two years and beat the Bison both years. Then he went to Cal State Fullerton and turned a perennial loser into a top 20 team with bowl appearances. Why would any of you want to wait 4-5 years? I don't think it will take that long.
-
Bartels first start: 10 of 12 for 212 yds 1 TD. 6 yds rushing. No Int. (Valpariso) Mollberg's first start: 25 of 43 for 281 yds 2 TD's 2 Ints. 8 yds rushing. (Montana) Studsrud's first start: 5 of 19 for 37 yds. 0 TDs. 3 Ints. 15yds rushing. (Eastern Washington) Easton first start: something like 9 of 20 for 126 yds and 1 TD and 1 Int. Ran for over 100 yds and a TD. (Indiana State) if you want to compare the NDSU kid to our guys, here are their first starts all as freshmen. So much depends on your supporting cast. It's a team game.
-
he passed for 126 yds. His first game. Always best to have your facts correct. Has nothing to do with our QB situation. Kid did what they asked him to do. What did our guys do their first games? Difficult to compare cuz competition was different but compare the first games as a freshman not some kids first game with A Soph and Junior.
-
Hak wasn't pushed out. Jury is still out for FB and Hockey. We made good choices but we have a ways to go in FB, and will continue our hockey success.
-
don't know. I don't talk to the coaches. I'm trying to point out he is a good student and outstanding young man. There is no reason for class B to even hint at character or work ethic issue. I may disagree with those don't think he can play as well as I think he can and my opinion isn't any more valid than theirs. I'm just a fan. No call for unwarranted cheap shots.

Academic all conference. 4.0 GPA. Last semester. Supportive of his teammates. Never been arrested. Stays at UND in summer. Works with special needs kids. He will be first college FB player in history benched for going to class. Having the opinion he shouldn't start or play if that's how you feel is fine. Taking a cheap shot like that can unfairly hurt a guys reputation. You need to retract that.
