  1. They wouldn’t cut a starter, but they might bench him. It’s a game. If a coach is that immature I wouldn’t want to play for him anyway. I will certainly ask our coaches what their philosophy is next time I see them. Chip Kelly wouldn’t be the guy I pattern my coaching philosophy after. The best QB’s are expected to audible. Is there an NFL team whose QB doesn’t audible? The vast majority of college teams expect their QB to audible. I would want my QB to audible out of a bad play. If I’m any good as a QB I would know when to audible and if I spend time studying film I will get it right most of the time.
  2. Where do you come up with that? You audible when the play called isn’t likely to work against the defensive alignment you see at the LOS. That’s why you watch film and why the QB’s have their QB meetings. You review opponents tendencies in certain game situations and against certain alignments. The QB and coaching staff should have game planned for most situations. The QB doesn’t audible cuz he thinks he knows better than the coaches he audibles based on game prep with his coaches. I hope we will never settle for a QB who can’t call plays or worse yet is afraid of his coaches or afraid of making a mistake.
  3. I think some of you are missing my point. You don’t ask permission at the line of scrimmage. Make the call. If the coaches don’t like it get someone else that you trust.
  4. I do expect a QB to audible and I expect a QB to learn to read defenses so they know what plays have a higher probability of success against different defensive alignments. Your teammates should expect you to do that and you can’t be afraid to make a mistake, but you better know how to read a defense and you need to audible to plays you and staff have determined give you best chance of success. Sometimes you audible to prevent disaster.
  5. You believe our QB is told not to audible? Based on what? Maybe you know something others don’t. The other examples are not ok because when you don’t do your job you may create opportunities for your opponent because of missed assignments. The exception is the punter running but it would have to be an obvious opportunity for a punter with the athletic ability to make the play.
  6. As I said before, if that’s the case, that’s on the QB, but if the QB’s aren’t calling audibles, then our QB coacc and /or OC are missing teaching moments along the way. As a QB you do whatever you need to do to be successful and to make your teammates better and that includes audibles.
  7. I believe some of you either forgot what it was like or never knew. I never once sat in a film session where the QB wasn’t told what to audible to when the defense was in a position to stop what play was called. Any college QB at this level doesn’t ask permission, he does what it takes to win. He doesn’t worry about getting chewed out and he doesn’t worry about getting benched. That’s one of the qualities of a winner.
  8. There isn’t a college offense where there aren’t audibles. If you are a college QB and for whatever reason, you are afraid to audible out of the wrong call, then you are playing the wrong position.
  9. That’s on the QB.
  10. Miller wanted to hire Denver’s Armstrong. Story was that he would have come, but his wife didn’t want to come to GF. Then Miller wanted to hire Ned Harkness. He had given Harkness the impression the job was his. That was vetoed by Clifford. The third guy was an assistant with UND ties who was said to be a “courtesy” finalist. Our UND hockey “experts” were up in arms when Gino was hired. Clifford was a huge factor in our athletic success during his tenure.
  11. This is a good hire. Great potential. First message is that there is “a new Sheriff in town”. Those folks who find something negative about this hire before he even gets started, are ones I would never want on my team. In fact, I question how many of those have even been on a team, much less contributed.
  12. You may be right, but that is QB’s responsibility. If our QB is afraid to audible he shouldn’t be QB. The QB needs to be able to read the defense and change calls at LOS. Do it and if coaches don’t like it I would tell them to find another QB.
  13. Not only are they allowed, they are supposed to audible when indicated.
  14. Frankly Scarlet, I don’t give a damn. You need to let it go. You keep saying the same thing over and over again. Everyone knew he 4th down call against the Bison was the wrong call unless one thinks if you are good enough, you should be able to get a yard anytime. No one gives a rip anymore what I think about last season’s coaching mistakes nor do they give a rip what you think. If someone wants to read over and over again your criticisms then they should PM you or better yet buy you a beer and sit with you and commiserate. If someone wants to know what I think, let’s breakdown film and review each position play by play. Otherwise we are kicking a dead horse. What we can do is write bigger checks and buy more tickets. That is our job. Merry Christmas everyone.
  15. This same rhetoric has gotten old. Big weekend before signing and for some reason you thought it important to repeat for the “hundredth time” that you feel better focusing on something negative? This should be about recruiting. Can’t you take your criticism elsewhere?
  16. Yup and it’s a good hire.
  17. I think that’s what I said. Unless their are conduct or academic issues (which are part of the total “performance “ package, I’m not sure a coach can use that to justify cutting your scholarship. I don’t know of any college that guarantees a scholarship if the player can’t contribute to the success of the team.
  18. I don’t believe you would know what makes a good coach. Having beers with fans isn’t a criteria. You criticized Hakstol and it’s pretty obvious he was a great coach. ( of course you may be a better judge than the numerous players, opposing team coaches, and the NHL teams that also think he is a great coach). The big advantage UND had in resources and facilities no longer exists. Berry and staff will have to work very hard to get this crew into the playoffs this year. This is definitely a rebuilding year. He will need to be patient as these guys continue to adjust to each other and as the staff then responds to their progress. Anytime a team loses a game, plays poorly, or has a bad season, the same suspects sound like Stephan A Smith and the only solutions are fire the coach, players don’t care, no effort, etc. Most of us couldn’t coach ants to a picnic much less understand what it takes to be a successful college coach. No excuses for last nights game but this won’t be our only struggle this season. Ugly games happen all the time. ( ask Saban about the A&M game). I may be wrong but the criticism of a coach after every set back gets old and certainly doesn’t show and depth of thought or knowledge about the teams struggles.
  19. Not sure where you got the idea that schools can’t lower a scholarship based on performance. Schools can give scholarships to walk-ons, raise scholarships, lower scholarships, or remove scholarships all based on how well the athlete has or hasn’t performed. Schools should not cut scholarships for athletes because of career ending injuries. ( when I signed my NLI I was told that but I made sure by adding it to the NLI before I signed it).
  20. Frankly, I don’t know why he missed games. I had read that it was once for missing a meeting and once for being sick. I’m not interested in asking about who got to meetings on time etc. I thought Otis had a very good spring. I thought he was good this fall but not playing up to his capabilities. If he has become a discipline problem I would wonder if he was advised by staff to move on. Again, I don’t care. We could have used him but not if he isn’t remaining focused on getting better and doing whatever it takes to help the team be successful. This subject is starting to look like high school social media gossip. Time to move on. We can replace his production from this past fall.
  21. What is the evidence there was a different set of rules for Otis? I’m not defending him, nor criticizing him cuz I wouldn’t know. (I don’t believe it is any of my business). I believe there are a lot of assumptions made based on rumors/second hand information, but I guess you could be correct if you have the facts.
  22. Yes, I believe so.
  23. What’s the word on EGF’s Panzer? I watched EGF play a much improved Detroit Lakes team tonight. DL was ahead 4-2 until 3 1/2 min left in third quarter. Panzer scored to make it 4-3, then tied it with his 4th goal with 35 sec left. He got the assist on the game winning goal in OT. 5pt night. Very quick, great hands, sees ice well.
  24. How would you know that. I understood from player and family the players like Bubba. They see what we don’t see.
