Mark and Steve were the two Veldmans who played at UND. Didn't a third play at Moorhead State? If this kid is Mark or Steve's kid, and anyone played on those teams with them in the early 1980's, call those guys and make sure we don't lose this kid to the AC. Tell them if they let their son or nephew go to the AC Gene Murphy will come back and run over them with his scooter and make them do power conditioning until they puke. This kid could make this one of the best recruiting classes in school history.

When I got to UND I was told (by my brother) that underage drinking at Judy's was immune from prosecution. My brother, (who is an attorney) just verified that the immunity is still in place. As long as you don't drink and drive, get in fights, or break the long pool cues (when you should be using the short one by the north wall) these charges won't hold up in court. I have trouble believing a lot of this. PCM is correct, wait until you get the facts. Does anyone really think you could fit 3 hockey players, the first year med students, the three Sigma Chis who still drink beer, Richie, Shorty, Maynard (and his Ulkele), Wes H., the snitch who called the cops, and some wide bottomed cop in Judys at the same time??? I would expect Ryan Bakken to do some investigative reporting and get the truth out. Chuck Haga might come back from the Star Tribune if he hears Judys is under attack by GF's finest. Don't they have anything beter to do? These are college aged kids. Tell them to dump their beer and get the hell out of there. That is how they used to handle it. If they get DUI's prosecute them. If they are UND students they are supposed to go to Judys until you get better ID's or are 21. On a related topic, when are the politicians going to change the laws so any kid 3 mos beyond receiving his HS diploma can drink beer? Hell, they can die for our freedom. Why not let them drink legally. Maybe somewhere along the line we will admit that even with our higher drinking age we have a bigger problem with binge drinking than virtually any developed country in the world. Change the law to age 21 or 3mo past your HS graduation whichever comes first. Give that idea some thought. It will improve our HS graduation rates at no increased cost to the taxpayers. Also, our hockey players wouldn't be in trouble.

They would be taking UND's ME, CE, and EE in order to decrease duplication. That would be a huge gain for them even thought they wouldn't be adding any new programs. What I was expected you to say was NDSU would close their Accounting program, Nursing program, some of their business programs etc. in order to accomplish your goal of decreasing duplication. If you really want to decrease duplication you will need to bring something to the table. Otherwise you are wasting your time. If you think UND is simply going to close those Engineering programs, and get nothing in return, I think you are losing me. If your idea is that UND should close any programs and send them to NDSU in exchange for an opportunity to develop new fields of study it will not happen. UND already is reviewing a number of new programs and, at times in the past, if not present, have discussed Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering as well as Genetic mapping, Biomedical Engineering etc. I believe most of those programs are expensive, complicated and very dependent on grant dollars and coorporate sponsorship. The days of Clifford and Loftsgard working together disappeared behind big Joe's ears and ego. We will see how things might change with UND behind someone like Dr. Bruce Smith. He has the charisma and moxy to lead UND and sway the politicians similar to Clifford. There was no one better. Joe Chapman is the best at it since Clifford.

Who cares, the season is over. Lets just agree NDSU had a tougher schedule. The AC should consider resuming the rivalry this year because with the graduation of Reed Manke UND will have an unproven QB and doesn't have the dominating defense it had in the past. They would be the prohibitive favorite to win the game and get the nickel back. UND is having one of its better recruiting years according to reports and will have an equal number of scholarships after this year. The game would be in Fargo if they resume the rotation and with all of that in their favor I think Taylor will agree unless they get a great deal from a D1AA or D1 team.

Those are programs UND would consider adding anyway but they need to be programs that are viable. Your posts have been fine I am just commenting that many people do not know that UND has excellent and respected engineering programs. If they were going to move programs to NDSU what would NDSU move to UND in exchange. NDSU also has excellent Engineering and it is a waste of time to start listing all of the fine things the two schools have done in Engineering. You brought up a valid point and I am just interested to know what NDSU would give to UND in order to get what they would love to have in Engineering.

UND is known as much more than an Engineering School. To the industry leaders, companies and organizations who hire engineers, UND has an excellent reputation. NDSU is not known as an Engineering school anymore than UND is. It is known primarily as an Agricultural College thus the long standing name "the AC" which was used by everyone including the AC grads and students. It wasn't a derogatory term until someone who went to school there decided to be offended. It has an excellent pharmacy program and because there are not many pharmacy programs in this region it is one of the conerstone programs to your school. I dont' think oyou would want to give that up but if UND was going to give up three strong Engr programs like ME, CE and EE, it would take a trade of that magnitude. Others have outlined the history of the School of Engr and Mines and I think that should put to rest any idea that all Engr should be only at the Land Grant School. If duplication is really an issue then the first thing to do will be to close the smaller colleges such as Mayville State and Valley City State. You will likely save enough $$ to leave the Engineering programs at both schools intact. If that works well, you can move west to decide which other colleges to close. Unfortunately, it will come down to who has the stongest lobby and political power to influence the legislature. I think those not familiar with UND's Engineering are under the mistaken impression it isn't very good because you don't know much about it. They should be marketing the programs and publicizing the programs and success of the grads but closing them or moving them is not an option.

So what would the trades be? If UND gave up EE and CE what would they get in return?

3 of the four Engineering majors in FB, none in hockey according to the media guides. I would guess an additional handful in the other sports (total 10-20 of the 400-500 athletes) but Engineering has been strong at UND so why would they want to move it? There would need to be some give and take. IF UND is going to have Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering then keeping Mechanical at UND would make sense. Sending EE and CE to NDSU as the trade for ME and Aerospace might be fair. NDSU doesn't have Chem Engr so it would stay at UND and is not part of the equation. Business is not a program everyone needs to survive. Once a school has it, I don't think anyone will want to give it up though. Many colleges don't have it. The Accounting program is one that doesn't need to be replicated and UND has been so strong for years it would make no sense to move it away from UND. On the otherhand, the cost of moving it would be minimal which ever way you moved. I was a CE major at UND and was advised to go there by the head of the states Federal Highway Administration because he felt UND had the better program. It was based on the interaction he had with the professors from the two schools and the interns they had working for the Federal Highway Administration in the summers. I am sure you can find someone who will tell you they prefer NDSU. The point is UND does have an excellent school of engineering. The quality of ME's from UND is excellent and they are highly recruited. I believe the EE program at UND is also very good but I don't have recent info to back that up. I have been told it is excellent at NDSU.

Pharmacy is much more than Chemistry and if we are going to be pressured into letting Pharmacists start prescribing certain medications because they now get a doctorate, then that would seem to fit with the Medical school and College of Nursing rather than the Chemistry folks at NDSU. You can make a good argument for keeping it with the Ag Sciences but because it is one of the programs that defines NDSU I don't think it would get moved. UND has a good Chem Engr program. You could make the argument because of the Ag Chem programs etc. you want to move it to Fargo but it is so much different than the other engineering disciplines that I don't think it would be worth making the move. Along with the Geology and Geological Engr and coal gasification research it seems the Chem Engr would be best left at UND. I would think with your line of thinking you would also support the Accounting and Business programs also being moved to UND as the programs at NDSU have only been accredited in the last few years and frankly, these programs at UND are much better than the programs in Fargo. If we don't want duplication of the programs then that would be the obvious move. It won't happen because the reason it was created at NDSU in the first place was that there were too many athletes who wanted to major in business and wouldn't buy into the Tri-college system. If there is going to be serious discussion to eliminate duplication then there will need to be give and take and the athletic directors and athletic boosters can't be involed in the discussion or decisions. For that reason alone, I don't think it will happen unless the Fargo legislators can build a strong enough alliance to simply out vote the opposition to get their wishes. The Grand Forks legislators aren't united enough and don't have the same lobbying power the Fargo area legislators do.

Smith is a great candidate and would be an excellent choice. He is an excellent leader, a proven teacher, good communicator and good listener but no one's fool. I think would be very capable of leading UND through the Fighting Sioux issue (no matter how it turns out) and leading UND through the D1 transition without losing focus on what UND does best and that is education and positioning our students for life's opportunites and successes. The PC crowd won't be excited about him at first because he was an athlete but he has the personality to win them over. It will be interesting to see who else applies.

He will need time to develop, but he has great raw talent. The good thing about him being from Frazee was they didn't have a good FB team and he was able to stay under the radar. Lennon got to see him at the UND FB summer camp. He could play LB, DE, TE or WR depending on where they need him and how big he gets. Very bright kid and very classy kid. He will be a great addition to UND FB.

Great kid, great player, team leader. Bright kid, so I hope he will get his degree no matter when he leaves. He is mentally tough enough to make the jump. Getting bigger physically will help. He will benefit from an extra year at UND in that he will get bigger physically and continue to improve his skills. The Blues know what he can do. The drop in scoring because of his thumb injury won't bother the Blues. I think he is one of the most impressive kids to come on the college hockey scene in the 35 years I have watched college hockey. Great hands, great vision, great team player and physically tough as hell. His dad seems like a bright guy and I am sure they will sit down and weigh the pros and cons. Best wishes to him whereever he goes (especially if he returns). There are some great kids coming into the program in the next couple of years and it would help them to be able to skate with him. He is a great example of how the game should be played. He is worth the price of your season tickets to watch him play if you are a hockey purist (whatever the hell that is).

UND has an excellent group of kids already commited (10). That is the same number listed in the Forum today that the AC has. This is the earliest I can remember we have had 10 kids committed and it looks like all ten kids are quality recruits. Word is this is looking like a banner year. Don't forget UND has typically not used the media to release this info by "leaking it" . I have read that both schools are looking to get about 15 kids.

Detroit lakes forward Joe Schiller has 10 goals and 14 assists in the first 6 games on a mediocore DL team this year. His has grown about 4 inches in the last year and added 10 lbs and is still growing. He is 6' tall and 176 lbs. He will need a year of Jr hockey, but has great hands and I think he had a good year this fall in the Elite league. So far only Alaska Anchorage of the WCHA is showing interest. UND may want to take a look at him and see what they think.

Because he can flat out coach. I said he would be a great candidate. I don't think he will be a candidate because he hasn't coached at the D1 level. He is one of the most highly respected coaches in the upper midwest and is also a great recruiter. His players love him and he simply wins. His 3-4 defense against the veer was a factor in how NDSU got from being the dominant D-2 team in the 1980's to going 3-10 against UND in their last 13 games and struggling before their resurection the last 2 years. That is also why Bohl would be a good candidate for the Gophers.

Johnson from Navy has done a great job in a program where many of the top players can't meet the physical and academic requirements. Chryst from Wisconsin because of his success and his ties to Maturi. Has He been a head coach? Walker from UCLA because of his Gopher background. That would be a gamble because he is young and I am not sure he has any head coaching experience? They certainly need to look at him though. Bohl fits in with these guys. He is a viable candidate. They know about him and he has been successful as a head coach. Solich, if he is interested, would also be a great candidate. He has proven he can win at the big time level. Isn't he the guy who fired Bohl at Nebraska? Obviously this will cause some pause for potential NDSU recruits as they wait to see if Bohl goes and if so who does he take with him? The official stance will be they haven't contacted him and he is happy where he is.

Bohl has done a good job at NDSU, has D1 experience, and received a number of positive comments from the Twin cities media after the game there. He would be a very viable candidate. I don't believe he is tied to NDSU's program and their fans. I think he appreciates their support and the good thing he has going their but don't kid yourselves. If he believes in himself and can get a 7 figure contract with the Gophers for 5 years he is gone. There are a lot of Minnesota kids that the Gophers have missed during the Mason years. Take the best Minnesota and N.Dak. kids that UND and NDSU get each year and you are going to move into the top half of the Big Ten. Take 1/2 of the kids they lose to other D1 schools and you win 9 games per year. The linebacker for Ohio State that won the Butkus award is a twin cities kid. The Wisconsin QB's after Bollinger are Minn kids. You could certainly add the kids at UND and NDSU who would have started for the Gophers and for $1,000,000 it is an attractive job. If Bohl turns them around he puts himself in a position for one of the better D1 jobs. Right now, the Gophers are his best bet to move up. I believe that has been his goal all along with all due respects to his fans in Fargo. Lennon would also be a great candidate but doesn't have the D1 background that Bohl has. Doesnt' mean he will be hired but he is a great candidates. Unless Bohl gets some inside info that he doesn't have a shot at the job I think he will be a candidate. How they handle it with the media is something else. Until they have a list of finalists Minnesota is supposed to keep the list confidential and I think Bohl will ask them to do that. What ever they are saying on their blog about fans wanting him or not wanting him will won't have any influence on the decision unless those fans are either former players or write checks for >six figures on a regular basis. The opinion on this web site has never influenced hiring or firing at UND and similar opinions on Gopher web sites will have the same influence..... none.

I count 10 verbals. The Minnesota kids look like Blue chippers and the Wisconsin kids look good. I don't know enough about the N.Dak kids out west but the West Fargo kid looks good. I would say They are ahead of most years and would be very happy with the results so far. They had some Jr. College kids in. One was a safety and I am not sure about the other. Anything on the RB from International Falls? (If his team host would have paid more attention to him and less to the Blonde Mom of one of the other recruits I think he would have committed).

Hockey has not always been the most popular sport at UND. Hasn't even always been the most popular winter sport at UND. There were many years when you would have better attendence at a MBB than the hockey game. When UND MBB was at its best and UND hockey was rebuilding, the attendence was different. Having said that, UND hockey gets more non-UND support than any other sport and you could certainly crown hockey as king based on that. When UND hockey is winning, the Ralph will be full. When UND MBB improves, it will increase attendence for MBB and WBB. WBB should compete well in D1 from day one based on the quaility of young kids they have in the program already. Crowds should improve with better competition as UND 92,96 pointed out. UND wouldn't drop Football any more than the AC would. It would hurt the overall experience of attending UND. No reason to even waste time discussing it. There is enough $$$ from UND alumni to support whatever UND decides to do in athletics. UND will have to work hard to get it but it will certainly be there for FB and should be there for any of the D1 sports that can be successful. The community of GF-EGF does not have the same ability to support UND as our Fargo pals can support the AC, simply based on the size and economic abilities of the two communities. GF-EGF however must remember the economic impact of UND and be willing to continue to support UND and help its transition to D1.

I wonder if the Lanser kid isn't Mike Lanser's son. Mike (Lurch) Lanser was a D-lineman who played for UND in the late 1970's.
