  1. a lot of the und success this weekend in getting the puck in the net has to do with getting shots off and to the net. i could go back and look, but just want to make a point - how many goals have come on rebounds or point blank shots? that is a step in the right direction for sure. we need to keep the pressure up. i don't think it would be wise to need to keep up the shootout with cc late into the game. let's get up another goal and hang on to a lead.
  2. Per Brad's Blog Sioux land Danny Mattson Academy of Holy Angels forward Danny Mattson has committed to UND for 2009, his coach said today. Mattson scored 19 goals and added 49 assists for 68 points in 28 games as a sophomore last season for the 26-1-1 Stars. He was recently on the U.S. Under-18 team that participated in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament. "He's got the kind of skills that you are born with -- you can't learn them," Holy Angels coach Greg Trebil said. "He puts up a lot of points. He's a good hockey player, a good ol' fashioned hard worker and he combines that with a lot of skill." Mattson also had offers from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Stay tuned, there will be much more on Mattson later. This is a great Pick up for the future recruiting classes.
  3. in the past, the consolation game has been played at Purpur Arena and the third place game and title game has been played at the ralph. that still seems tight for time to start the two games at least after 6:00 unless the third place game will also be at the Purpur.
  4. from what i understand, it is like year's past where FSSN (23) will pick up the feed from the opposing team's telecast (FSN local to Madison). if you are in GF or the other communities in the gf coverage area, you should get it on 23. i have another email in inquiring about the possibility of midcontinent distributing the games to all of the regular coverage areas that usually provide games on FSSN.
  5. i just posted this in the restaurant thread, but it appears that midcontinent did indeed pick up the feed. hope this helps. i don't mean to double post, but some may not check other locations... i just got this email from a relative that works for midcontinent and thought i would pass it on. it looks like the FSSN has picked up the games from the FSN feed for this weekend in selected areas. Where: Grand Forks, GFAFB, Emerado, Grafton, Drayton, East Grand Forks, Crookston, Thompson, Buxton, Mayville, Portland, Hillsboro, Grandin, & Galesburg What: Additional UND Hockey games (vs. Wisconsin Badgers) this weekend courtesy of FSN. The games will be shown on MC23. The Friday game is at 7:30 and Saturday is at 7:00. i may be wrong, but it looks like this is just the gf midcontinent coverage area. it does not include the fargo cable one area, the rest of north dakota or the sioux falls/south dakota coverage area---why? i don't know. i hope this helps some people out.

  7. Schlossman seems to be accurate, not always as timely as every other "source." this was posted on his blog today. http://gfheraldsiouxhockey.blogspot.com/
  8. Perhaps LaPoint is being approached by the Sioux coaching staff in a similar way that Finley was. He has an offer on the table and is planned at this point to come in for '07. However, if Smaby leaves (probable), he could be brought in next year. That could be an inticing tactic from a recruiting standpoint. I'm sure that if the Sioux miss out on this one, there are many others out there.
  9. i seem to remember the same game/series unless i am a couple of years off. i haven't had time to look it up...just going off of memory. if i remember it right, it was in the mid 1990's when Toby Kvalevog was playing in net. UND was hosting UW and TK let in two soft goals in the final seconds of both games. this was the beginning of UND getting back to playoff dominance as Blais began his tenure. again, this is just from memory. it is filed away next to many other Sioux memories. perhaps, though this isn't the series you are thinking of. hope this helps. i'll go back and check things out.
  10. I'm not sure if anyone has seen this or posted it, but it appears that there is yet another obstacle in the way of the Fighting Sioux being able to use their Logo. I personally don't think the NCAA has any business telling schools what to call themselves. They should be busy enough regulating the goings on with athletics. Latest Ruling News... I know what everyone on this board thinks about the issue. I am wondering if anyone has any information as to what UND's next plan of attack would be.
  11. i think there are a couple of issues here. the development group (city scapes) is using a grand forks architect (schoen associates---designer of rea) to design their development. apparently, they are also using gino as their pr person to appeal to the people of fargo. this project has met a lot of opposition. the downtown setting is a good deal for the city, but not the city block that is being proposed. there would be a large compromise of historic buidings on this block. i think the group needs to take a better look at the site for this project as well as the scale of the buildings in their proposal. architecturally, they are way out of context with the rest of downtown. from a hockey standpoint, i don't think fargo is ready for this. i think they need to have a larger client than the jets and/or a better, more established plan for NDSU's club team. there is no doubt that the coliseum needs to be replaced and that downtown would be an ideal location for an arena. the only question is who would use it. as far as a ushl team in fargo again, i think it would be a conflict of interest. the jets are getting a lot of attention and doing well in their league. they are a development league of sorts for the ushl as some players play in the nahl and eventually move on the play in the ushl. i will be very surprised to see this pass in fargo. i would be even more surprised to see NDSU get a DI hockey program. we'll have to see how things shake out in the next couple of weeks. perhaps there are a few plans that are waiting in the wings if this happens.
  12. i thought it was a great weekend for the sioux. i've been to nearly all of the home games and still can't figure out a couple of strategies. anyone know about the breakout? i can't figure out why the defensemen take it nearly to the blueline and try to break out to the neutral zone. it is terrible hockey to watch because 90% of the time the opponent intercepts and dumps it back in. i know we've beat the power play to death on here, but i still don't get the dump on the power play while rushing 4 guys up ice. i think the sioux will be in good shape this weekend and ready for duluth with only 1 loss in their final 6 games of the year if they get a sweep this weekend (no prediction, though!).
  13. i agree and immediately thought the best case scenario and voted 5 when i first read this poll. i am still optimistic and think the Sioux will get at least 8 points (split uaa, sweep scsu, split uw) to finish the season. i don't see the sioux struggling enough in uaa to be swept and i certainly don't think they'll be knocked around that god-awful arena in st. cloud. i think they'll sweep the huskies handedly (and i'll be there to see it) setting up a great final weekend.
  14. this is off topic, but a page back a question was brought up about recruiting a big enforcer-type defenseman like Commodore. although young, next year's defense won't be a huge hole to fill with our recruits already committed for next year. has anyone heard of UND recruiting a goalie to come in next year? i think everyone is satisfied in saying that Lamoureux and Parise will battle back and forth and likely split time again next year. Lamoureux will likely play here for 3 more years and Parise 2. who would be a recruit that would push those two. i'm not just thinking a practice goalie like Sofie, but a legitimate candidate for the next four years. as we have seen, the sioux like to keep 3 goalies (obviously for practice reasons, but competition would be a good thing, too) and i don't see any goalies appearing on UND's recruiting page (on INCH) or heard of any signings. does anybody know of a goalie coming here?
  15. sorry...game's tonight. i'm getting ahead of myself.
  16. back to the topic. anyone know the outcome of the GFC-GFRR game from last night? i can't find an article on it. i may be looking in the wrong place. by the way...south may have been :47 away from a state title last year, but they didn't win it. hope the shirts look nice, though! there is no doubt that GF is hockey town ND. FS is talented this year, but state championship-talented...i don't know. i'll put money on either gf school long before believing FS will be alive after the semis.
  17. It was in the Forum yesterday. Cable One access changed to channel 44. Hope that helps.
  18. i went to the manitoba game last saturday. between periods we went to the olympic rink to check out the "penalty box." at the time it was just a couple of beer stands (similar to the miller stands in the concourse during the games) in the olympic rink with black curtains behind so people didn't wander around the rink. i'm not sure how they will set that part of the rink up to show the game. if you go, let us know...it would be an interesting place to watch away games if they set things up right.
  19. this is no surprise. this kid has taken the amateur spotlight for a while. he played at shattuck a couple of seasons ago with zp and all the other ssm sioux. he has been the projected #1 pick in the 2005 or 2006 (forgot which one he'll be eligible for) nhl draft for quite a few years. he even made an unofficial visit to UND when zp played here (i believe his freshman year). he has since given up his eligibility by playing major junior up in canada last season and this season too i would imagine. he was plugged by wayne gretzky last year in an article as the next player to likely break his records...quite strong words for a such a young kid. we'll at least get to see him this winter at the wjc's. his name has been mentioned on different threads on this forum in the past, but it appears he is on the fast track to the nhl and college is way out of the question. even if there wasn't the major junior rule in the ncaa.

    Ziggy

i agree. three goalies is a must. ziggy obviously felt like the odd man out. let phil take a year to take everything in and then push parise the following year. i never had a good feeling about having brandt in the net...not like kg. parise is so much more confident and played some great games last year. if not for a screened shot that barely snuck over his shoulder against du...where could they have gone last year? parise gone because his brother is...bs. he'll be here until he's ready for the nhl...probably 4 years. now it's time to go after a young goalie with a couple of years of ushl left in order to secure a solid entrance for next year. anyone know what happened to kasey moreland? great talent...he would fit well, is young and now has a brother on the team (hopefully in a month).
  21. he's in the student online directory, but listed as a junior. that might be because of credit status and he might be enrolled in class today...we'll have to wait for the opener or hear something on the subject. my guess is that he's back. i would imagine we would have heard something by now. that will be a potent team this year....
  22. i'm not sure that i have ever seen a west fargo team (youth hockey or hs) that has led me to believe that it was directed by one of the best coaches in the state (let alone a good coach). i agree with the comment about the fargo clubs (raiders, flyers) being nothing more than a bickering bunch. however, they have had much success. until there is reform in the organizations, i don't think they will consistently compete with gf. gf has a good program in that it is run by the park district, not an evil empire of greedy, child pushing parents who want to live their dreams through johnny and have them on the ice all night because they can do it because they're on the board and they are paying their coaches. obviously there is still enough interest in the fargo clubs because they are still alive and competitive, but look at the success of the gf youth teams over the years (national bantam titles, countless state titles...). these are the hs teams i think will go to state this year. east gfrr south gfc gpr west minot bhs hazen century i think it will be hard for one of the gf teams to not win state. 3-peat for gfc would be sweet.
  23. i agree. genoway is a great talent. he didn't get the accolades that bochenski and parise did, but their numbers were in another league (amongst the hobey high numbers). i think genoway will center the first line on starting night at the ralph. i think spirko's size and college inexperience will take a little adjustment (the first weekend anyways). 1-Murray - Genoway - Bochenski 2-Zajac - Stafford - Porter 3-Prpich - McMahon - Fylling 4-Kaip - Spirko - Massen with 2 and 3 interchangable depending on when the opposing team's first line will play. let's hope that all line adjustments will be made early and all lines will fire every night unlike a couple of years ago when lines were still being shuffled going into the ncaa's before that humiliating loss to ferris state. i hope massen can turn up his game to the levelof his sophomore year. this should be an incredible team this year with many highlights from many players.
  24. it is my understanding that phillippe lamoureux is the only goalie coming in this fall. with brandt, parise ziegelman, and now lamoureux they will have a packed house in the goalie department. with lamoureux's success in high school and being named ushl's goalie of the year, i would imagine ziegelman would be the odd man out unless hakstol wants to keep 4 goalies. not to take anything away from ziegelman...i am aware of his pre-college success, but he is not on scholarship and hasn't seen much ncaa action. brandt and parise will likely share the goalie job again this year. i would like to see those two have much more consistent outings. maybe lamoureux can push them to that level or even crack the lineup if those two don't play as well as expected. it will also be interesting to see how hakstol responds to situations like that. i think many fans were frustrated with blais's reluctance to pull struggling goal tenders in the past. we all remember how andy kollar struggled for so long before blais would actually pull him and let brandt see some action and then finally turned that season over to josh siembida in 01-02. i wonder if siembida would still fit into the mix if he would have stayed in school. he would be a senior this year. we need to get legendary goaltenders back. the 1-2 puch of kollar and goehring was incredible. we never had to worry if they would show up.
  25. thanks for the info...much appreciated.
