  1. Exciting news! I like to consider figuring out future schedules one of my pet projects, but my internet has been down since noon today, and I'm logged in on dial-up now. ;) Glad to hear about the scheduling news that came about this afternoon!

Regarding, the Potato Bowl opponent, I think there is a still a possiblilty that it could be a sub-DI team. But, in addition to Sac St. and Morgan St. as Hammersmith suggested, I believe that UND has been in contact with Stony Brook and Drake as well. Personally, I'd love to see Drake as a semi-regular early season opponent for the Sioux. Regional school with some name recognition (although more for basketball than for football).

According to this site, it looks as though both Stony Brook http://schedules.travisliles.com/2009/01/2...-schedules.html and Drake http://schedules.travisliles.com/2009/01/2...-schedules.html have their September 12th date filled.

It appears as though we may be down to Morgan State or Sac State as potential FCS teams left...

  2. With the addition of Fresno St. and San Diego St., it appears that UND is focusing on competition with FBS teams from the West vs. the East. The FBS games scheduled thus far are Texas Tech, Idaho, Fresno and San Diego...with a possible Hawaii game. Can anyone say if this is intentional or just coincidental? NDSU, SDSU, and even USD seem to be scheduling FBS teams further east with the Wyoming/NDSU matchup the exception. Just curious if anyone has any insight...

  3. I will also agree with others that this thread is no longer on topic and should be closed. The Brad Kelley incident was unfortunate and the court system will take care of it. This thread is turning into a pissing match between a few posters who don't see eye to eye...please close...thank you.

  4. At this point, we may be looking at yet another 10 game schedule. I'm sure UND is doing everything possible to find an opponent for the Sept. 12 Potato Bowl date. If they can't fill it, the season opener won't come until October 3, which is also homecoming.

Slight correction so there is no confusion. The home opener won't be until October 3rd. The season opener is still scheduled as an away game at Texas Tech.

  5. According to the link from earlier in this thread regarding schedule openings, Maine still apparently has September 12 open. Even if it means "overpaying" in terms of a guarantee, that would seem to be the best option in terms of getting a recognizable name for a Potato Bowl opponent.

If your referring to the http://www.footballscoop.com/?page_id=61 site...it seems to be rather out of date as many of UND's confirmed games are not listed.

This site http://cfbpalace.net/maine.html shows that Maine has 4 home games and six road games scheduled. If this schedule is correct, then I doubt they would be looking for another road game...unless they were able to buy a different game out.

EDIT: This second site also has a few errors as it lists UND traveling to Cal Poly this year...

  6. Could we accept it in their stead? 900k in the budget and a trip to the Big House would be awesome.

    Please, Brian Faison, PLEASE!!!!!!

Michigan is looking for a game on October 17th...we have a home game scheduled against Sioux Falls on October 15th. Home games have been tough to come by this year...doubt we would schedule this game unless we were able to schedule another home game to replace it.

  7. To further illustrate that point, the Oilers NFL franchise had already moved from Houston and was known as the Oilers for two years in Tennessee prior to changing the name to Titans. Changing the name, not the move from Houston, is what essentially killed the very existence of the Oilers.

Geeze Dave...talk about deja vu. Can't you just post a link to the previous thread where you discussed this at length vs. hijacking this thread? I would but it takes too long to do when accessing this site by my phone.

  8. Sitting in the student section right now...I'd call it a sub-par effort.

Most are wearing white... But I expected more

White out actually looks pretty good on tv. Not a total white out but a good effort...

  9. To think that the new UND Pres and AD would continue with the current nickname and logo after the timeframe set and without Tribal approval is laughable. It would be suicide for the university and that won't happen.

I never said it would happen nor do I believ it is a viable option. If we do the third option it would indeed be foolish. When you look at the settlement in legal terms this is a possibility. I would hope that our administration has been or will soon be in contact with the Summit to clear up any questions or ambiguities.

  10. Insurance policy.........

Just off the top of my head, here are some recent matchups that were agreed to, but never fulfilled, all within the last 5 years:

Montana St. return game to NDSU

    Montana return game to SDSU

McNeese St. return game to USD

UND return game to Mesa St.

Southeastern Louisiana return game to UND

    UND game against Cal Poly

    UND game against Weber St.

? 2 more games between UND and UNI ?

Likely just covering a few bases in case some more attractive future deals fall through, because they can.

No matter how this is spun it is still a bad deal as mk said. UND CAN schedule an NAIA team, if need be, after the 2010 season...absolutely no reason to sign them up three years in advance...

EDIT: I would rather schedule an FCS and have it fall through rather then having "insurance" games against lower competion three years out. At least we would know that teams are interested in playing us...scheduling USF for 2011 makes us look desperate...and maybe we are :D

  11. 1. Why would he present. UND hasn't applied.

    2. " ... until the logo issue is resolved one way or the other ... " (emphasis added) Which means the Summit just wants this resolved. Well duh. That clock is ticking with the NCAA. And mentioning them ...

    3. UND hasn't applied. So why is the Summit commenting? Did they get a nudge from someone (Myles Brand? someone else?)?

Douple has stated that UND has applied but he is not willing to forward the information on to the Presidents until the nickname is resolved...which is BS because the name is or will be resolved by the time they admit anyone into the league.

Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong...UND has been taken off the NCAA list as far as being out of compliance. If Brand were to be doing this, and I don't believe he is, wouldn't the NCAA be at risk for breaking the agreements of the settlement?

  12. Interesting stance on the conference's part. I'm assuming that you will be playing your other state school no matter what; and sooner or later you'll schedule at least one of the South Dakota schools also. So you will be traveling to those universities on a pretty regular basis no matter what conference you eventually join. However, for a school from Shreveport LA or Indiana, traveling to the upper Midwest for 3 games instead of two could be very economical. You'd think the conference that already had two Dakota schools would see the financial benefits of fewer road trips, consolidating recruiting, etc.

I wonder if any of those schools play Bradley, Utah, etc. in any sport? :D

UND has played and will continue to play schools in the Summit league. We beat UMKC in Men's basketball this year...We have also scheduled South Dakota State University in this year's upcoming baseball season...to name a few.

  13. Face facts. With the MOValley schools having more members, they need fewer games. Ditto the Big Sky. Ditto the Southland. With Lamar adding football in the Southland, it's only getting worse. Compared to five years ago, combined, those three conference need 27 less non-conference games annually. In the mean-time, DIA payoffs are going up. D2 conference like the MIAA and the Northern Sun with former NCC schools have like 45 less non-conference dates available. It's a different world than even four years ago. UCDavis and Cal Poly aren't exactly having picnics making their schedules either.

BTW, if USF was a DII in 2011, does it then make it acceptable???

No...It wouldn't make it acceptable to me if USF was DII. If UND is having trouble filling it's 2011 schedule after the 2010 season, or at the very least after the 2009 season, then go looking for NAIA/DII schools. I would have to think that a game against a DII or NAIA or even a DIII school wouldn't be that hard to come by that we need to schedule them three years out. As far as doing them a favor, fine we schedule them this year as an NAIA...I believe that's more than enough to be a favor. Going DI, I knew there would be scheduling difficulties and I accept that. I just can't understand making agreements with NAIA/DII? schools three years out. I would much rather schedule a "Central Connecticut State" or other lower FCS schools from elsewhere around the country.

  14. This is why i would rather see the Sioux in the Big Sky or other conference and not in the Summit. What happens if the tribes accept the name then later chance their mind and we go through this again. Wouldn't the Summit kick us out.

Who's to say that any other conference wouldn't do the same? I for one would much rather be in the Summit than the Big Sky...two reasons are because of the time zone issue and because of where our recruiting base is for most sports other than hockey.

  15. Does no one remember the NDSU - Montana Tech game? That was a bigger joke than this game will be.

USD, SDSU, and NDSU (at least during their transitions), all made a practice of not playing lower-lever in state schools. They all have played lower level out-of-state schools, as fans are less insulted (see the schools noted in your post), and the potential of an embarrassing loss isn't as consequential in the media.

You can try to spin this all you want but it is what it is...a huge red flag. It's one thing to schedule an NAIA next year, but why on earth do we need to be scheduling them for a game three years from now? If we are having trouble filling out a schedule for the upcoming season, go ahead and schedule who you can...but three years out...makes no sense. :D

  16. Maybe the Big Sky will welcome us...well maybe not. I say start looking for a new name now. The Summit officials are a--holes for snubbing us because of our name. We should look for another conference other than the Summit especially in 2012.

The nickname should be settled by the time the Summit expands...perhaps this is their way of telling us they aren't interested in having UND join the Summit.

Edit: Also on DAZ tonight Sweeney read a statement by our AD that states "We are happy with our current conference the GWC." He can't possibly be saying that with a straight face...can he? :D

  17. What? No one is being disrespectful. If something happens in our town we probably do have a right to know.

I wasn't accusing anyone. Just trying to be considerate as it is a sensitive subject.
