  1. UND's schedule is what it is. The home schedule is on the weak side and the road schedule is decent. As has already been said, UND tried to put together a tough schedule. I don't think NDSU did us any favors by doing as well as they did with their transition. They demonstrated that a mediocre DII team can move up and play at the next level quite successfully with equal resources. UND on the other hand has been one of the top DII teams for the last several years. The established teams in FCS are all quite aware that a game with UND with increased resources would be anything but a given this next year. You can even use SDSU as an example as well since their D11 program wasn't much to talk about prior to their transition. They goy some good games early on and beat some of the established FCS teams.

  2. I don't doubt any of the stories on here about Mankato fans, but thought I would share that I spent all day Saturday in my Sioux sweatshirt in Mankato, at the game and the bars, and I didn't hear one negative word said in my direction. The Mankato fans seemed pretty tame to me.

I actually showed up at the Mankato booster event before the game on Friday night. I was with three other people, two buddies and a friend of a friend (who is a Mankato season ticket holder). He told me there was free beer and that it was a similar arrangement to what Duluth has at the DECC. So I anticipated other Sioux fans to be there as well having a little pregame. As it turned out, this was not the case. We walked in at 7:05 pm and my two buddies and I were the only Sioux fans. My one friend said "you gotta be kidding" and walked out immediately. I decided to stay. We did get several looks as we walked in, including the person who was speaking. He actually stopped speaking for a second or two when we walked in. The speaker was Coach Jutting himself, which I found odd...he talked until almost 7:20 pm and game time was at 7:37. He was actually taking questions from the crowd...I was pretty tempted to ask at which point in the game would he match Bruess' line with Kaip's line, but thought better of it. Only one comment about no serving "Don't serve Sioux fans"...but other than that, nobody said anything.

  3. This was in the Mankato paper over the weekend. "Downtown Mankato: One drunk short of a riot"

After being around the downtown Mankato area this weekend, I could easily see a riot occuring. Drunk idiots everywhere!

There have also been a couple of recent deaths related to alcohol according to a couple of the locals we talked with. A few weeks ago a Woman celebrating her 21st b-day died from alcohol poisoning. There was also a 50-something year old man who fell from the 4th floor at the Holiday Inn and died. We were visiting with a bartender from McGoff's on Saturday and he said he had cut that gentleman off the night before.

Personally I saw many people celebrating, having a good time. I never personally felt threatened or in danger even though I wore a Sioux jersey for most of the weekend. I actually enjoy the setup they have in Mankato as the arena, motel, bars, and restaurants are all within walking distance. Not as good as Madison, but still a very fun trip!

  4. I will be heading to Mankato for the series. Two of us will be at the Friday night game and six of us will be at the Saturday night game. First trip to Mankato and we are staying at the Holiday Inn. Hope to see a good fan turnout!

  5. Did anyone notice the fans walking to the stadium they all have the UND flame logo on and the UND logo on the flags are they inticipating a change in logo and possibly nickname??

I don't know that I would read too much into that since both the practice field and stadium field still say Sioux in the end zones...

  6. Personally, I like the white better, but it needs a higher percentage of old people (my section s#$%ed).

I think we should do it again - I like the whole idea, green one night and white the next. It adds to the whole unity thing....

Thanks to those who got this off the ground.

I agree that the white out is better. It's been posted before, but there are too many shades of green. UND's green is "Kelly Green". That should be the only green UND officially markets. I personally enjoy the green jerseys the best of any of UND's hockey jerseys. A sea of white would look better and be more intimidating than a sea of multi-colored green...just my opinion.

  7. I actually wouldn't mind seeing this '80s band as they are one of the few I haven't seen. I also think they will draw rather well since they haven't played in the area since the 80's. They also have a bit of a crossover appeal to the country audience. My guess is they will draw close to 15,000 people...of course it depends on ticket prices as well.

  8. As long as the Standing Rock tribe refuses to grant approval to UND to use the nickname, it really doesn't matter what Spirit Lake does.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but if Spirit Lake were to support the nickname, perhaps the supposed "silent majority" of Standing Rock could/would begin to become more vocal.

  9. The Spirit Lake chairwoman has gone on record stating "we have more important things to worry about" and it looks to me like tha is where she is focusing her energies. I am trying very hard not to be respectful and not type what I think Ron His Horse is Thunder is doing...

I realize this was their stance prior to the settlement. I haven't heard her state that since the settlement. To me it seems odd that they have been so quiet in the wake of the settlement...

  10. The sooner we change it the sooner Standing Rock and Spirit Lake get to live in a world of their choosing.

I hope they enjoy that world.

I am beginning to buy into this as well. One thing that I find curious about the past couple weeks however, is the absence of the Spirit Lake tribe in all of this. It seems as though we are only hearing from the Standing Rock Tribe...or have I missed something?

  11. I have a hillarious video clip of the grand valley mascot if anyone wants it send a message with email add. i think you know what I'm talking about - it involves a certain goal post. How bout that. Wow. Ha. Wonder if he got a butt chewing the next day.

I did see that...it was hilarious! I would have to guess he got a talking to...Just post a link to the video you have, I'm sure others will enjoy it as well.

  12. How does this proposed hockey hall of fame differ from the hockey hall of fame currently in Northern Mn? think it's either in Eveleth or International Falls or some place like that. Is that one the US Hockey Hall of Fame? meaning hockey basicly at all levels, where this one is the NCAA Hall of Fame which is just college?

Yes...this one would be College (NCAA) only. I don't know if it would make it financially or not, but there are many Canadiens who visit GF. Granted there is no College Hockey in Canada...at least not yet. But I think that Canadiens who visit Forks would still be interested in visiting a Hockey Hall of Fame.

My understanding is that some people with GF connections currently have the naming rights for the HOF. However, they only have the rights for a certain period of time. If they don't build within that time the rights to the name go up for bid again. Has anyone else heard this?

  13. Why do we need a nickname? If we lost this battle, which looks likely, why can't we just be "The University of North Dakota?" Why do we need to have some cheesy alternate attachment?

I'm not sure what others think about this, but I've been in multiple discussions about it and we all think it's the best idea.

    What do you think?

I'm not sure what I think of this idea yet...I know we wouldn't be the first school to do this according to this website http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/#None. Not sure how many of those schools have athletics though.

  14. If I am reading the agreement correctly the tribes can change their minds at any time and UND would be right back to where they are now.

IE, the leaders of both tribes could come to an agreement with UND to let the school continue using the Sioux logo and name and then 5 years later a new leader could come back and say "not any more" and there's nothing UND could do about it.

Is that what you guys really want?

Plus, the U of MN is not going to play you guys in any sport other than hockey as long as you have the Sioux name and logo. No UND/UM football games. No basketball games. Etc.

Why not just be "The University of North Dakota" and use the interlocked ND logo that the football team has been using?

As PCM stated this has been discussed at length elsewhere. However, one thing I would like to add is that if (and it's a big IF) UND gets approval from both tribes I would guess that a contract would be signed for a length of time...ie a twenty year agreement to keep the name...

  15. I thought St. Cloud St. wouldn't play us in anything non-conference because of our nickname/logo. Am I wrong on that? Thanks.

You must be wrong...Pat Sweeney mentioned on the Fighting Sioux Coaces show last week that St. Cloud has agreed to play UND next year. Not sure if it's here or in St. Cloud...I would assume it would be a home game though.

  16. The Frozen Four is a blast...I have been fortunate to go the last two years. I have friends who have gone when the Sioux are not there and they still had a great time. We do have two rooms at The Curtis which is next to the Pepsi Center and are hoping the Sioux will be there as well...Lots of Sioux fans in Denver so you will be amongst friends if you decide to go.

  17. Anybody have any new news on OUR facilities plan (mostly football?). I'm curious about what going on at UND right now, not SDSU!

Maybe an Alerus Centre upgrade or a memorial Stadium renovation?

I do truly feel like we need to get closer to a seating capacity of 18-19 000 like the Fargodome to help our program grow.

Last night on the Fighting Sioux Coaches show, Lennon talked about the new turf which was placed at Memorial Stadium. He also talked about upgrades to the Memorial stadium complex...specifically crowning the natural grass field and the addition of an inside practice facility.

  18. It isn't "a potential new nickname." It's a marketing slogan.

Why is it that when NDSU refers to its athletic teams as "the thundering herd," we don't assume that a marketing slogan is about to replace the Bison nickname?

Sorry about the confusion...I don't believe UND is replacing our logo/name with "Force of the North." I just wanted to point out that Mr. Blais wouldn't allow the Fargo hockey team (currently coaching) to take on a name that some believe UND (his former team) may adopt. In other words Dean is ok with the Fargo Force because he knows UND is only using it as a marketing slogan.

  19. Which, in fact, it wasn't.

And even if UND were thinking about using the "Force" as their nickname, I would think that Dean Blais (being the head coach of the Fargo team) could/would have some pull and make sure not to infringe upon UND's potential new nickname.
