  1. Dropping the name/logo was an implicit price for gaining full D1 status and conference affiliation(s) without the NC$$ creating any issues down the road. The name/logo were effectively finished the day the "settlement" was signed. Everything done in the interim by the school, board, etc. was merely a show to avoid undue backlash by alums and other supporters. Let's get it buried on our terms, and move on.

Agreed! I love the Sioux name and always will, however this is a move that needed to be done. If we are unable to gain conference affiliation for the majority of our sports, then all of our sports will suffer...including hockey and football. Look at all the cuts being made to athletics at other college campuses around the country. I'm upset that it had to come to this, but it has. It's fine to let the anger out/blow off steam whatever but I have a difficult time understanding some of the bashing of the Summit Conference that is going on. In the end, this is the best possible conference for us to be a part of...It will save on travel costs, reestablish old rivals, make scheduling and recruiting easier which ultimately helps the whole athletic department. Why take out our anger on some who is "most likely" going to welcome us to their conference and assist us in making the transition?

  2. The last article that I read basically state that the Summit was not looking at these schools.

As much as I love the Fighting Sioux logo and nickname, it is time to change it. UND needs conference affiliation more than it needs the nickname right now. Summit League affiliation allows UND to schedule old conference rivals, keeps travel costs down (which is huge with this economy), and allow the coaches in these sports a better opportunity to recruit. Some may say that there may be other conferences, but in all reality the Summit League is the best fit for us. Today is a sad day as the inevitable looks to be happening, but on the flip side, this should be the first step to gaining conference affiliation and stabalizing the athletic department for the future.

  3. Actually there is a ton of difference between indoor 6's and outdoor 2's. Maybe not the way it's played here :-), but it's comparing apples and oranges. And if anyone wants to doubt the validity of the sport feel free to join a 2 person league, you'll figure out the differences and how tough it is. Passing, setting, blocking, hitting, strategy (both offense and defense) are VERY different.

I have played and continue to play both. I realize that two person and six person indoor are basically two different games. I guess the point I was trying to make is that there is interest in sand volleyball... even in the frozen tundra of NoDak. I wouldn't necessarily classify it as a regional "niche" sport since volleyball, in general, is played most everywhere in the US.

  4. Talk about a regional, "niche" sport. wow ;)

Maybe someone should tell them the tv ratings might have had something to do with the combination of the heat, humidity, the RAIN, and not so much the athletic ability of the girls. Some national radio shows referred to the matches as "wet t-shirt contest on prime time tv". (Not that there's anything wrong with that. (as my wife is looking over my shoulder)) :D

Sand Volleyball may be regional, but indoor volleyball is played throughout the country. It wouldn't be too tough to transition from indoor to sand volleyball. I've played in sand volleyball leagues for a number of years here in GF and there is quite a bit of interest...I would guesstimate 80-100 females that are involved in the GF sand leagues each summer. Granted not many of the players are college caliber, but there have been a number of UND volleyball players that play in these leagues.

  5. Myself and a few others are tentatively planning on heading to Lubbock for this game. Does anyone know when tix go on sale? Does UND have an allotment on tix and if so, how does one go about getting them?

  6. Thats kind of what I was thinking. Maybe we could get them to travel next year. Only problem is with all of the FCS schools down south and out east they could travel a lot shorter distance for a game. Maybe they would be willing to help out a school in transition though since they are going through it as well. Either way I like to hear about scheduling earlier than the spring before the season starts.

If they were to travel to Forks, I would like to see them in 2011 as we only have three home games lined up so far. "Next year" (2010) we already have five home games lined up.

Personally I don't think they will travel up here since they are/will be an FBS team in 2012 but who knows?

  7. Its can't be for next years schedule it's for the following years. As far as where we would play them who knows. Maybe a home and home could be worked out. I like that they are getting on these things early as the closer you get to seasons starting the harder it is to find teams with open dates. The sooner something gets worked out the better for both schools. It will be one less game to schedule although with all the schools on the east coast its a little easier for North Alabama to find teams than it is for us.

Not sure where USA would fall into the schedule. 2011 USA will count as an FCS school on opponents schedules. 2012 they will count as an FBS school. Typically FBS schools don't travel to FCS schools so I would think if UND scheduled them, it would be an away game. Since they are a start up program transitioning to FBS, perhaps they would travel to UND in 2011 and we would return a game in 2012. Hard to speculate...

  8. He is suspended for "academic reasons" I get the impression that there is a good chance he will be back but the staff will be taking a close look at others in case he doesn't return!

I think Mplsbison is referring to Ryan Chappel. I don't know the answer about Chappel returning. There has been some speculation but I think it's just message board rumor. I don't believe he is participating in spring practices.

  9. I agree that it is nice to see another FCS school on the home schedule! Don't know too much about Stony Brook but glad they are willing to come out to Nodak. Does anyone know if it's a part of a home and home agreement?

  10. Anyone else notice that 3 of the 4 home games listed on the schedule at Fightingsioux.com are evening games? :glare: I think that is a good move.

Also, Northeastern St. has been added to the 2010 schedule as a home game. I've never heard of Northeastern St., but Rocky Hager is the coach of Northeastern. Is that who it is referring to? Anyways, 5 home games already for 2010.

EDIT: I'm guessing it is DII Northeastern St. from the Lonestar Conference.

That means next years home schedule may be complete already. Not sure if they will have a sixth home game or not, but it's nice to see at least five...four of them being FCS schools (if you want to call Lamar an FCS school since it's their first year starting up their program).

  11. I just want to make it loud and crystal clear that you don't support the state of ND.

What's your point here? Big A HG is not from North Dakota. Why does it matter whether or not he supports other schools in the State. If I went to school at the University of North Carolina and became a big fan of their basketball program, I would cheer them on and support them. If they did not make the NCAA tournament, but say another school from North Carolina does (such as Duke or NC State), do you think I'm going to cheer/support Duke/NC State because they are a school from the same state as the University of North Carolina? I could care less how other schools from North Carolina did in the tournament and in some cases (Duke) I would cheer against them because they are a rival.

Personally, I am a North Dakota native, UND Grad, and UND fan. I was passively cheering for NDSU to win and make it to the tournament. I would even like to see them win a game or two. Not all UND fans feel the same way for various reasons...

  12. Considering that UND is paying NAIA Sioux Falls "close to $60,000", one can guess that the cost of bringing in a DI probably approaches $80,000-100,000.

According to a poster on AGS who is a Sam Houston Fan, NDSU paid them around $40,000 plus air fare plus a return game to get them to come to Fargo. Granted that was a couple of years ago and expenses have increased but I still think it's crazy that we needed to pay nearly $60,000 to get an NAIA school to come in...

  13. Does anyone have any insight as to how much UND is offering potential teams to come to GF for open date on Potato Bowl? I would hope they are willing to spend a little money to try to get a quality opponent. It's been reported that we received a $25,000 buyout from Idaho State so. Combine that with the payday from the Texas Tech game and the profits from from a large Potato Bowl crowd, I would thin we have some cash to spend. I have no idea how scheduling works, but I am a little worried about the inability to schedule FCS opponents at home. Can anyone shed any light as to why scheduling is so difficult?

  14. Looks like Sac State posted their schedule and are playing Poly on Sept 12th.

Portland State, Wagner and Sam Houston seem to be about the only other FCS schools with Sept 12th open other than NDSU and UND.

According to a poster on AGS there is a rumor that SHSU has scheduled a game against St. Joes of Indiana to fill their open slot on September 12th. Not looking good for a FCS opponent for Potato Bowl

  15. Either that or Portland St. I am preparing myself for another DII or possibly NAIA game however :(

If it comes down to the fact we aren't able to get a FCS team to Forks for the 5th home game, I would like to see UND entertain the idea of only four home games if it results in a quality team signing a home and home in the future...such as SDSU did a few years back.

Sorry I did not quote you as the source in my posting above mplsbison... :D

  16. Looks like Sac State is traveling to Cal Poly on September 12. No official confirmation I can find, but on the Sac State message board that's what they're saying.

I'm really hoping for a Sam Houston game for that day now.......

Either that or Portland St. I am preparing myself for another DII or possibly NAIA game however :D

  17. SDSU 2004 schedule:

    http://www.gojacks.com/SportSelect.dbml?SP...p;Q_SEASON=2004

SDSU had 4 home - 7 away in a transition year.

Precedent set for a transition team. *check*

FCS away game opportunity for UND vs. a long time rival and a close game for fans to travel to *check*

    Game scheduled *pending*

I should know better than to respond to this post, but I'm kinda bored today. The only way this game takes place is if it's played in Fargo. Having said that, I believe the only way it takes place in Fargo is if there are no other options for NDSU and the only remaining option for UND is another NAIA school at home. Even with that, I would bet against the game happening.

Hopefully UND can throw some money at an FCS and we'll get another "quality" home game...

  18. Fri:

    Denver @ Wisconsin (NHL Network)

Notre Dame @ Nebraska-Omaha (CBS College Sports)

Minnesota @ Colorado College (FSN or FCSC)

Michigan @ Ohio State (Big Ten Network)

    North Dakota @ UAA (FSSN)

    Sat:

    Unannounced teams (CBS College Sports)

Minnesota @ Colorado College (FSN FCSP)

    Denver @ Wisconsin (FCSC)

    North Dakota @ UAA (FSSN)

    Plenty of college hockey :)

Can someone tell me when Midcontinent started carrying the Big Ten Network on channel 70 in GF? I stumbled across the Ohio St vs. Michigan St. hockey game last Friday.

  19. Thats for sure, but I doubt it will happen.

    NDSU won't happen...

I would like to see either Portland St., Sac. St., or SHSU (if indeed the Prairieview game fell through for them) as my top three schools of preference for the Potato Bowl. Hopefully we have some money to spend to make it happen.

  20. According to a post here... http://www.anygivensaturday.com/forum/show...d.php?t=56671... Prairieview A&M backed out of a home game with Sam Houston State University in order to play an FBS game. This means SHSU may be looking for a game on September 12 and may be willing to travel since it had been scheduled as a road game at Prairieview A&M. Does anyone know if UND has the buying power to bring in an established FCS team such as SHSU?

EDIT: This website seems to have the most up to date FCS schedules... http://travisliles.com/schedules/

After looking through this schedules on this site...these are the teams that have Sept. 12th open. Not all of these teams are necessarily looking for a road games...

    Sam Houston St.

    Sacramento St.

    Portland St.

    NDSU

    Alabama St.

    Davidson

    Morehead St.

    Valparaiso

    Savannah St.

    Howard

    Wagner

  21. Exciting news! I like to consider figuring out future schedules one of my pet projects, but my internet has been down since noon today, and I'm logged in on dial-up now. ;) Glad to hear about the scheduling news that came about this afternoon!

Regarding, the Potato Bowl opponent, I think there is a still a possiblilty that it could be a sub-DI team. But, in addition to Sac St. and Morgan St. as Hammersmith suggested, I believe that UND has been in contact with Stony Brook and Drake as well. Personally, I'd love to see Drake as a semi-regular early season opponent for the Sioux. Regional school with some name recognition (although more for basketball than for football).

According to this site, it looks as though both Stony Brook http://schedules.travisliles.com/2009/01/2...-schedules.html and Drake http://schedules.travisliles.com/2009/01/2...-schedules.html have their September 12th date filled.

It appears as though we may be down to Morgan State or Sac State as potential FCS teams left...
