This means to me is ask QB’s if they want a promotion within or go with a solid coordinator with QB credentials. Hopefully someone who is good to be the next head coach if O-coordinator, if hire within then for coordinator then need to find a solid qb coach. My Bison friends were surprised and now enjoying our situation.

If there is a short list and no quality, Craig Bagnell of USD maybe an option. Good OC at Bemidji and made Mary’s crappy offense (slot veer) to a top D2 offense. He was a winner in college and a quarterback guy. just a crazy thought

Or more simple, chance to coach D1, and make more money and possible head coach aspirations. Good coaches/assistants will be plucked by other head coaches for bigger opportunities (and pay). As for the Titanic reference next season will show how accurate your analogy is in my opinion. If anything the last few years seem more like the Bermuda Triangle where it looks like we can tackle in the open, run the ball etc. then it suddenly disappears in a game or a half. Ideally he (Eric) will be in the running for head coach if and when Bubba leaves because of the FBS experience and a chance to use UND as a resume builder.

My novice guess Deng Deng is more of a deep threat or simpler route runner. Unless he can develop better footwork and learn how to get separation from d-backs.

In the recruiting thread there was talk about where the team is at and playoffs 4 of last 5 years etc. My take is Where we were before Bubba and where we are now is has been an improvement. As stated offense is better but needs to be more consistent and defense was decent to good has dropped especially the last two years. The team and especially the staff (very much most of us on this forum) that beating NDSU and making the playoffs is no longer good enough. Need to make deep playoff runs and a title. Next years schedule is tougher but we get a few more pieces on D and have effective schemes we could go from 6 wins to 8-10. If we don’t get the latter I would think there will be more coaching changes next year.

I know some games some teams looked physically bigger and faster. Hopefully with a new strength coach, that will not be as much of a factor against the top tier teams of FCS. Offense will about the same for next year, it will be interesting to see how QB play develop….hopefully we will see more QB run game since the depth there is deep. Defense needs to do fricken figure it out, 2 straight years of horrendous 3rd down play is 1.5 years too long. As many said get more depth/competition to start. Get bigger, stronger and faster with our D-Line.

Montana beat D2 Farris State by one TD and lost to Northern Arizona and beat Idaho State by a TD. Montana’s Defense does carry them when their QB stinks.

With having injuries deplete depth is the possible reason why or lack of size/muscle or speed……I am not a strength coach guy, so I do not know how much impact he would have on the in-season and out of season training.

In my opinion. One similarity between Danny and Rudy is the reliance of a play concept. Danny we complain about the different versions of the short passing game, and Rudy I recall his use of different versions if the toss sweep run game.

I hate is ndsu like everyone else, USD needs play with lead or it could get ugly. They did have a dramatic block kick for win last week thus, best chance for bison to lose is if they beat themselves.

DeBoer is a big what if, if hired he would have needed 2-4 years to turn it around. Took 2 years at Fresno before Washington, UND FCS, UND it would taken longer, I think. (Before I joined the board, I thought he would have been solid hire, however, I did not see his rise be like a Chip Kelly). Fresno 7-1 10-4 first year gone most staff went to Washington 4-4 8-4 2nd year without DeBoer 3rd year would show if there is continued success at Fresno. Continued success would not have been a given, DeBoer may be a home run but, there is that chance if one of his assistants stays he may not be a great head coach.

I agree with a lot of what you say and others. When Bubba does retire or leaves. Hopefully the foundation he leaves springboards UND to a Natty like what happened with Duluth in D2 when he left.

Possibly during player, coaching and possibly AD evaluations on staff people were a little more honest on what they “the team” needed to do and be able to achieve their goals next season.

Unless the told differently from higher up we will not get new D staff. We do need a shake up, 2 years of poor D and terrible 3rd down defense requires something to change on that side of the ball. We got a least one NG with transfer portal and helped. Still need more help on D-line with portal unless the guys we have can fill that roll. We just don’t have the personnel to rush 4 (I hope next year). If we don’t have a rush we need to cover …… teams seem to salivate over our zone (last year we did not have the spread to cover man….SIU last year comes to mind). 5 man rush with blitz did not do much this year. All out blitz and we seem to lose on the jump ball throws. Long story short, either fix with portal (not full scale) or some new Defensive coaches. 2 years of a glaring problem is already 1.5 years too long.

Need another dude at Nose and develop some physical d-ends. I still remember when we were D2 and a 3 to 4 man pressure schemes brought a rush on UNI QB and the coach commented on that he did not expect that from a D2 team! If we would be in the middle of FCS on 3rd down defense, I believe, we would have about 2 extra wins in each the last two years.

I agree about the run game comments, the Passes that I did not mind was play action which had worked fine, because they had to honor the run and if it was not completed, Tommy could react and throw it away.

Instead of 7-5, I would love 75’s like Deacon Jones, Howie Long and Mean Joe Green on our Defensive front!

Two years in a row with poor 3rd down defense and defense in general. If I would guess if Bubba stays (AD does not do a buyout or he does not retire) The AD needs to demand the Defense and staff would be overhauled. USD kept coach but put in a new “O” coordinator, got new assistants like Bagnell from Mary. Their offense wasn’t great but it sure complemented their Defense.

If we give up another score, we may be done. It’s been a long, long time we came back from 14 points down.

Not sure how we match up with our D with their O. Offense will need scores in the first half and keep it going 2nd half. Need to run the ball well and keep their offense off the field. When teams have long drives against, it takes longer for us to get into offensive rhythm. We need to do that to them. We joined the Valley so we can be bullies in the trenches when we go out of conference. I’m hoping for the Hogs to do this, this Saturday.
