  1. It's moments like this I wonder what a difference 1 player makes in the lineup. Had Tyson Jost stayed one more year, we find a way to win 1 more lousy game last year probably get into the tournament while Duluth misses the NCAAs and likely some of its current talent on the roster opt for greener pastures in the professional ranks.
  2. Right now, we may not even be the best college hockey team in our state.
  3. Are we the only team that has key players out of the lineup all the time? I assume M-Duluth is running at full capacity.
  4. We may need to consider changing our athletic motto from pledge your loyalty to pledge your mediocrity. Things are trending that way.
  5. I always thought timely PP goals were more important than overall PP percentages. We found that out in the Minnesota and Wisconsin games. We needed a timely PP goal in the first period when we had all the momentum. We get 1, better yet, we score 2 and perhaps WMU checks out for the rest of the night, especially with their best player in the stands. Instead, we let those 3 PP chances slip by, they play disciplined the rest of the way and have a strong night in goal; and then an unlucky bounce in the third period comes back to haunt us. A PP goal early, and at worst, we probably salvage a point. Hopefully, this isn't a night that will play out a few more times this season. Yes, defensively, this team is playing well, but unfortunately, you don't get style points in the standings for keeping team from having a lot of zone time and shots.
  6. I don't blame Berry for pulling his goalie with 2 and a half minutes to play. I blame him for not pulling his goalie with 2 and half minutes to play in the second period. That is when the sense of urgency should have kicked in. We all knew how this was going to play out after two periods. I venture to say there are guys on this team that would have a tough time scoring on their wedding night. This team isn't at the talent level right now as Duluth and St. Cloud State. Let that soak in for a minute.
  7. Bowling Green tops Western, 6-2 in a penalty-filled game tonight. No Allison in the lineup for the Broncos. Despite outshooting BG, the Broncos look pretty average without the big guy.
  8. If somehow the NCAA would permit UND and Minnesota to play half-ice during intermission like the little kids do, I'd be more apt to make the trip.
  9. Just getting around to read Brad's comments from Friday's game. It’s in my game story but the stat probably bears some repeating: It has been nine periods since a forward has scored a goal. The defensemen have done more than their share of providing offense, but a lot of forwards are on lengthy droughts right now. Seven forwards have goal droughts that are seven-plus games right now (Joel Janatuinen, Ludvig Hoff, Dixon Bowen, Collin Adams, Zach Yon, Johnny Simonson, Jordan Kawaguchi) as UND ranks dead last in the NCHC in scoring offense and seventh in power play percentage. I think that nugget of information really sums up this squad right now. For a program with 8 banners hanging in the rafters, and a reputation as a Duke or UNC-like program for hockey, North Dakota should Never be offensively challenged. Programs like Colorado College. Western Michigan, Omaha shouldn't have more true goal scorers than us.
  10. Long time follower of UND, but it's apparent this is a team which has a roster with .500 talent. Too many third line players on this team. Hard workers, but not difference makers. The difference makers (Boeser, Jost, Poolman) left last season and when the so-called young guns coming in underachieve then you're going to be a 5-7th place team in this league. And then you add the injuries and sub-par goaltending and you're due for an off year. It's probably amazing we are 12-9-8 right now. There is the potential for a lot of returning players, but right now I think we could do without six or seven of them. They just aren't adding value other than 3rd line depth. And it's becoming apparent the coaches over-estimated the skill of the incoming players (sans Nick Jones). Sleepless night ahead of the team, coaches
  11. Ralph Engelstad Arena switching to Pepsi products!
  12. Hopefully, Mantha can't have that kind of performance tomorrow. A win in game 2 and this tie will be more palatable
  13. Now is the time to just crank one from the top of the circles and take the goalie out for tomorrow!
  14. From what I saw, it looked like this Manitoba team wasn't as strong as past teams who played UND. Did anyone else get that sense?
  15. What if conferences could only put in the bids? And then have say as to which of its teams are placed in the regionals it hosts. Four regionals and six conferences. Two sit out the rotation each year. For example West Regional 1 Fargo, ND (NCHC host) West Regional 2 (Cincinnati, OH (Big 10 host) East Regional 1 (Albany NY) (ECAC host) and East Regional 2 Manchester, NH (Hockey East host) The following year West Regional 1 St. Paul, MN (NCHC host) West Regional 2 Grand Rapids, MI (WCHA host) East Regional 1 Providence, RI (ECAC host) East Regional 2 Worcester, MA (Atlantic Hockey host) The 3rd year West Regional 1 Green Bay, WI (WCHA host) West Regional 2 St. Paul, MN (Big 10 host) East Regional 1 Manchester, NH (Hockey East Host) East Regional 2 Buffalo, NY (Atlantic Hockey Host) And then back again Conferences can determine which NCAA-tournament team in their conference gets placed in their regional. Could be based on proximity of conference member to the host site. Could be based ahead of time on the regular season conf. champion; or conference tournament champion. Obviously, there are challenges and pitfalls to this idea, and if I'm missing some glaring ones, please chime in. Just killing time this afternoon!
  16. Notre Dame saw what speed + tenacity + talent looks like. Fortunately for them, they won't see all three facets being displayed by one Big 10 opponent on any given night next year. Denver is going to be tough to beat on Saturday. I think Minnesota-Duluth will need to play with the lead.
  17. Has it been reported about the women's annual deficit before? And since day 1, has it always been a substantial loss? Why has it taken 15 years for the public/administration/media/fans/community/program to finally face the hard truth? Like everything, it comes to the 11th hour to save something from the chopping block.
  18. Outside the Grand Forks bubble, does anyone else in the state even care about this issue of women's hockey being cut? Once the Lamoureux's "15 minutes" is up, who is going to continue to fight for the program's survival? And who will bring the checkbook?
  19. Yeah, I remember seeing Bayda play a game for the Manitoba Moose in 2006. He was up and down between NHL and minors. I thought he had the makings to be a Travis Zajac-type player. Steady, but not a prolific scorer.
  20. NCAA moved the Frozen Four off the weekend of bouncy ball's Final Four, but why couldn't they return regionals to campus sites over these two weeks. 16 teams to 8 for the first weekend. 8 teams to 4 for the second weekend. Then, Frozen Four. They do something like that for NCAA baseball. Two weeks of regionals and then CWS That would sure beat watching kids on TV running around the stands in three-quarter empty regional siets.
  21. 3 years in a row with 2 NCHC teams in the Frozen Four. Yeah, I think it's the best conference in hockey.
  22. Don't those Tech fans have school tomorrow? Five years removed from the old college hockey order and it's safe to say Tech has been a beneficiary of realignment and formation of the NCHC. Top-half league finishes, home-ice in playoffs and two NCAA Tournament appearances. I don't believe they would be there playing in the WCHA with the likes of UND, Denver, Duluth, SCSU Omaha and CC.
  23. Yeah, forget about the rodents wanting to host at the X. Only way they can ever get out of the regional is if it's 20 minutes from their campus. I'm also astonished there are just four non-campus venues in the east (Manchester, Worcester, Albany and Providence). But then 45 East schools are within a two-hour drive of all of them.
  24. Any reason why Miami is hosting a regional two years in a row in Cincinnati and three of the last four years? Is no one else putting up the dollars to host? If that's the case, we should be putting a bid in every year. St. Paul can be the Midwest Regional and we can be the West Regional.
