Corners look better when the qb is under heavy pressure and look average or worse(2017)when the qb has all day to throw. Once Schmidt brought pressure, the cb play magically improved.

Lots of good comments in this post. Solid QB play, pound the ball, stuff the run and it will be a good year. DB's looked much better in 2nd half after Schmidt started blitzing. Specials need lots of work. As of now kickoff depth/coverage and missed field goals will cost us a victory or two.

Completely agree. Schmidt adjusted and the defense shut MVSU down completely in the 2nd half.

I thought all 3 played well. Two of them were playing their first collegiate game. Ott and Larson play downhill.

Positives: QB definite upgrade. RB's are very good. TE's were targeted more often. Run defense was good Defense improved in 2nd half after adjusting Negatives: Pass defense in 1st Half Dropped passes by WR's Fumbles Special Teams(Kickoffs and FG) Overall I'll always take a 35-7 win. Lots to work on this week. Hopefully leg injuries to Tank Harris and Jade Lawrence are not serious.

ILB quality and depth should go a long ways toward a vastly improved defense in 2018. Hard to be a good defense when you can’t stop the run and can’t get “home” on the blitz.

I have not seen two deep for UND since the start of camp. I would think 2-deep for first game should be out by now.

My top 5 to have a breakout season(With benefit of fall camp): 1. Nate Ketteringham - IMO Ketteringham upside is fantastic and will allow us to finally stretch the field. 2. Mason Bennett - This guy will have a monster year. Great first step and now has some more mass to move around. 3. Noah Larson - Will be a giant step up from last year and I think will "get home" on the inside blitz. 4. Alex Cloyd - May end up being Ketteringham's most popular target. Looks the part and I think is now ready to play the part of a dominant TE. 5. Noah Mortel - By mid-season will be the leader of a much-improved OLINE. Has the frame and tools to be a great one for UND.

Some VERY extreme injury/exit situations both in number of injuries at one position(ILB & DB) and the 2 best returning defenders(Reyes and Harris) played in 2-3 complete games between both of them? I am not sure many teams could withstand that mentally or physically. Montana State just lined up a big body at RB and bludgeoned us because we could not stop it. I still don't understand the continual struggles on the OL. Does not seem to change. The defense will produce points and good field position but we still need to be able to sustain drives and have the time to use all the offensive weapons.

Could it be the defense is just that good? Probably not but it would be nice go back towards 2 yards a carry.

I agree. Not stopping the run and not getting home on blitzes killed the defense last season . Should be much better this season with everyone healthy.
