  1. I was at the tourney for both games, its too bad that the MNSU vs SCSU game wasn't the final, that was an intense and fun game to watch start to finish. As to MNSU vs UofM, the goofer got out hustled and out played, plain and simple. No one on the Goofers wanted to fight in the corners, sprint for loose pucks or finish checks. The Mavs did that all game long. It was pretty satisfying watching a team as arrogant as Minnesota get beat by Bemidji and Minnesota State, especially when you consider that the U didn't want either of them in the old WCHA.
  2. I would say that if we are going with family or relationship based analogies then the Fighting Sioux name and Logo is closer to a child getting taken away by social services, not an ex-girlfriend, we didn't break up the Fighting Sioux, we were forced to surrender it by the powers that be, but i digress. I hope they find some subtle way to incorporate the old logo, nothing too obvious but a subtle element that fans would pick up on from the old logo. However the smart money is on them doing something generic and in line with what a focus group things will be the latest trend in branding, rather than trying to make something timeless.
  3. I think that people tend to make a lot of snap judgments when it comes to this issue. I know their are a lot of people who look at this as getting a scholarship and stipend to "play" a sport like in high school. I don't think that they realize the level of work that D1 and D2 athletes have to put in on top of school, because most athletes do have to make the grades or loose eligibility and the school isn't going to rig there grades to keep them in. I knew a girl who went to Minnesota State University, Mankato on a full ride volleyball scholarship, she played for three years and then quit her senior year because she found out that she could work near full time and actually pay for school and have more time to study. Of course it was a hard decision but it was the best choice for her at that point. When you take into accounts individual workouts, chalk talk, practices, most of these athletes are working a full time job and carrying a full course load.
  4. " I have successfully combined a parrot with a crow! No longer will people in have to have two separate birds for Pirate parties and and Edgar Allen Poe recitations".
  5. True, but still a questionable choice. In any case I hope Bubba and his team will continue to improve, they have been making excellent progress, its another season and another opportunity to Grow UND football.
  6. My only issue with this plan is that the Football Stadium Capacity is only 6 thousand (I could be wrong) I Think they should try and go bigger than that or at least have a plan in place to add additional seating. I love that they are going to put in a soccer stadium though, the women's soccer team their is one of the best in DII and I think they could do very well in DI if given the opportunity, they deserve to have their own stadium.
  7. You have the ring... and I see you Schmaltz is a big as mine... now lets see how you handle it!
  8. If we can get "Fighting Hawks the Flamethrower" I will be so freaking happy!
  9. I'm sure that City of Mankato will lobby pretty hard to get some kind of extension on training camp, whether that will be successful is anyone's guess.
  10. Yes but schools will periodically review that status. As I said in the initial post the rumor going around is that MNSU is investigating the possibility of moving to DI, they have to make sure it would be possible for them to afford to do that. They just recently had a major reno done to the their hockey arena, their basketball arena is relatively new and quite good, and now a reno of the outdoor facilities and replacement of the football stadium is rumored to on the table. So they may decide to stay D2 and be done with it or they might start trying to attract a D1 conference. Your right they need an offer but your also treating these conferences like they are some sort of ultra elite gentleman's club, which they are not, they're businesses. They want to see a reasonable rate of return for their investment, so MNSU would need to prove it has the facilities, fanbase, and its athletic teams would need to continue to preform at the top of D2 play in most of their sports, especially football and basketball. If you have good product and venu then MVFC and Summit or other leagues would take a look, maybe even BigSky - though I doubt MNSU would want the BigSky as travel costs would be high with the exception of North Dakota, though in-terms of national exposure BigSky would be the better choice. At this point though its still up in the air and we'll just have to wait and see if anything acutally comes of it. Personally, I think Minnesota is sorely in need of 2nd D1 institution both athletically and academically, out of all the public institutions in the state Mankato is probably the best one to make that transition (and keep football). Southern Minnesota is a good market for an FCS team, If Minnesota State gets a new stadium that is at 10,000 capacity or higher I think its a safe bet that they are going to try to move to D1, if their is just a renovation of the old stadium or new but under 10,000 stadium i think its safe to say that they plan on staying D2 for the foreseeable future. Who knows maybe the Vikings will chip in to help fund a new Stadium.
  11. Look I wasn't saying "use these" I was just saying that design wise something simpler might be better than trying to get too detailed, aggressive and cartoony. I like the first one because it is just the head of a hawk, like the fighting Sioux logos were just the facial profile of a Dakota Warrior, It has more detail but no a ton of it and would be relatively simple to trace or draw, the eyes look aggressive but not overly so, and its not too cartoony.
  12. Mark Kennedy - Some how I doubt he will get it, I can only imagine the liberal faculty outrage if the president of UND was a former republican congressman.
  13. My guess is something similar to what happened last time will happen eventually with Ben Brien, especially if the logo isn't well received, the alumni association or some other organization will approach him for a few designs and then pick the best of the litter, and if its really good it will be picked up as the official logo, If that does happen I hope they pay him better than they did the first time.
  14. I think one thing that can get overlooked in all this is that these leagues are businesses , they want expand to new markets and gain new streams of income, they have to balance that with with skill level and parity in their conference to ensure quality of their overall product, but sometimes they have to take a risk on a new team entering into the D1, just like the Bigsky did for UND.
  15. I'm going to second this, I don't see NDSU going FBS especially in a conference where the smallest athletic budget is at $60 million.
  16. Maybe the best solution is to keep it simple, don't try to have too much detail on the logo, try to go to aggressive or too cartoony silly. What made the Fighting Sioux logo work was that the Sioux warrior had a facial expression that was stern and determined but not over the top aggressive and certainly not cartoon. Hopefully that aspect will not be lost on the firms working on designing the new Logo.
  17. Lol, what can I say I am an unapologetic nerd, if you have never seen the opening I'll post a link in here, but imagine the campuses or just the arenas with the logos of the teams. I think it would make for a pretty awesome intro or even promotional, though I doubt they would be able to get the rights to do it. at least for a price the NCHC would want to pay.
  18. So I'm about to drop a nerd bomb over this whole discussion, its not specifically related to the new name but kind of design related thing, what if for the NCHC Frozen Face off they did kind of a game of thrones style thing for the jumbotron, like the opening of game of thrones, with game of thrones versions of the team logos, I'm sure their would be a ton of copy right issues but I think it would be a cool idea.
  19. completely agree students should not have to bear the brunt of a school moving up to D1, that said a move to D1 encompasses more than just athletics. I would however argue that the problem is far deeper that that when you consider that MNSCU's total Budget is around 2 Billion for the entire system which includes all technical and community college's in addition to the 7 State Universities, the budget for what amounts 145,000 students is actually only 2/3's of the budget allotted to One university that services just over 50,000 students. Now I realize that the U does a lot of research which explains the bigger budget, but that is still a pretty insane spending disparity. Apologies to all for getting off the Topic of FCS football, this wasn't my intent when I broached the rumor about MNSU investigating going D1.
  20. To be fair I was watching on NCHC TV so I couldn't hear the arena announcer for every announcement, and I had work Saturday so I missed the 1st period. Though honestly I am just tired of all this, I probably won't ever acknowledge or like the new name and I doubt I will go out of my way to buy anything with the new name, but I will always cheer for University of North Dakota. So yea whatever happens with the new nick and logo I am totally going apathetic now.
  21. http://www.prairiebizmag.com/event/article/id/26284/ - Checked out the work of some of the desingers listed in the article and I wasn't overly impressed, hope all the Hawk lovers are ready for a dumb cartoony hawk that will look dated in about 5 years.
  22. Mankato's hockey team has started to get some coverage in the cities recently through via charter and Xifinity, not on the major networks of course but its a big step considering where the team was 3 years ago, honestly I see live streaming becoming a lot bigger for college sports going forward. cheaper and more options for games. As far as Kato ever overtaking the Gophers. that unlikely to happen anytime soon, I know the school is looking to challenge the U though, not just athletically but also in academics and research, just 10 years ago the U lobbied hard against doctoral programs at Kato and other MNSCU schools and lost, same with research, they wanted to keep their monopoly on that in the state of Minnesota, but now that is starting to change slowly but surely, and if you look at the scandals with reguard to spending and misconduct the U is in a weaker position to bully MNSCU, It also doesn't help that the U's three major athelic teams Football, Basketball and Hockey have been abysmal the last few years. I think MNSCU wants a D1 school that can compete with the U as well as Draw students from Iowa, Wisconsin and the Dakota's. They want to do it without having to raise tuition rates to an ultra high level, Like the U, I think if they are an FCS team this shouldn't be as hard to do but it will take some time. As far as the suitcase college charge, I think that is a fair statement but it has been changing in recent years when I first got down here in 2012 the student section at Football games and hockey games was sad. Now the hockey team has a packed student section and a reasonably packed house (would be more packed if Verizon Center wasen't a U shape are and, last section of the U on either side are crap to sit in). Football is also drawing a good crowd and the mavericks are looking a lot like UND did during its last years of D2 play. Basketball isn't drawing as big of a crowds despite having a good record most years but their arena is easily comparable to the Betty or NDSU's new court. More students are not packing the suitcases and staying in kato on the weekends, for events and work, so again the times are changing.
  23. Not sure why, Football has never used the logo before and likely will not start, same story for basketball.
