  1. Since there seems to be some interest in adding BGSU here is a BGSU take on the whole thing. http://www.bgsuhockey.com/2016/07/opinion-mavs-apply-to-the-nchc-what-now/
  2. When I read this I wondered if he was being sarcastic... if he is serious then he needs a reality check. I honestly have hit burn out on the nickname thing. That said UND can keep the Hawks merch, I will keep my Fighting Sioux gear.
  3. If anyone can remember back to the 2013-2014 season, the last old WCHA season, Minnesota State ended the season at number 4 in the old WCHA and despite not winning the conference earned a spot in the NCAA tourney. It's pretty hard to judge how Minnesota State would do in the NCHC because it hasn't played a ton of games against the NCHC. The first year of NCHC it had to close losses the UMD and SCSU at the north star cup, the 2nd year was two splits with UNO and UMD, Last year MNSU was swept in two Early Season Series by UNO and SCSU, then Lost a close game to SCSU in the Northstar cup. Based on that alone it would look like MNSU wouldn't do well in the NCHC. However, its pretty hard to judge how a team will do based on 11 games over three years. I Think if MNSU really does want to join this season will be critical, they will need to bring home both the McNaugton Cup and the Broadmoor trophy, but more importantly they will need a winning non-conference record, especially since it is their year to sit out the North Star Cup, they also need to make a good tourney run, they need to get deeper than one game into the national tourney.
  4. Minnesota State's Hockey program has really come a long way since Hastings took over. they went from a team with only 1 NCAA appearance to a team with 4 of them, and the first one was in the last year of the old WCHA, They have made some very substantial upgrades to the arena and player's facilities, also they have reinvigorated the Maverick fans and they arena that was mostly empty is now one that is mostly full, and I blame the empty seats that do exist primarily on the "U" shaped seating Arrangement. I do think MNSU would be a good add for the NCHC, especially if they are adding ASU. However in spite of this I will say that MNSU needs the NCHC more than the NCHC needs MNSU. I suspect that MNSU want to compete in NCHC to improve the programs standing (and that of the School) further, they also want to attract more top tier players, one of the best ways to do that is to be in a more competitive league. Additionally to improve your standing in the national polls and improve your chance of getting into the NCAA tournament regardless of winning your conference tournament its better to compete in a tougher conference. I would guess that the reason that MNSU is doing this now is because AZ State is going to be added to the NCHC and its much better to have an even number of teams in your conference than an odd number. If Minnesota State leaves the WCHA it could trigger more realignment. I know some have talked about the BIG10 adding Tech as an affiliate member. I also don't know if WMU is still unhappy with the cost of the NCHC but if it was could that eventually trigger some sort of swap situation with WMU leaving for the WCHA and another WCHA team joining the NCHC, maybe Bemidji State or Bowling Green?
  5. And when Bemidji comes to town all the girls come out wear Bemidji jerseys... what they are naughty Beavers!
  6. They can pull out all the recruits they like but they cannot get any of these kids to play as a team. I watched them against Bemidji and Minnesota State, no one wanted to go into the corner they were all expecting that someone would get them the puck so they could shoot. We also need to take into account the fact that not only are the goofer in a slump but so is Wisconson, Michigan State, and Ohio, its hard to recover when the majority of your competition is also in a slump,
  7. Seeing as how a budget shortfall just forced und to disband mens baseball I don't think the school will be taking on the extra scholarships that FBS requires.
  8. Generic to be sure. But it looks like a sports logo as compared to the Generic corprate logo SME got $50,000 to create. Now I will admit I have seen some adjustments on here that make it look like a decent shoulder patch logo, but not a good primary logo. However the current logo dosen't even work well a shoulder patch logo.
  9. Agreed whatever fans do, alternate logo, petitions, etc, you are not going to see an instant change, even something as simple as the minor edits that people on the forum have done won't happen right away, but in a couple of years you'll probably see the logo modified or an additional logo will come out.
  10. Go for it, if you think you have a market and can make profit, than by all means go for it. If you want Unity "North Dakota" or "UND" still works.
  11. Ah yes, the self righteous defender of the administration. First off I never said that I would be spending money on the alternative logo, of course, I certainly wouldn't be spending money on the SME Logo that was put out by the administration. As far as supporting buying athletic related media and goods, let's see I don't live in the Grand Forks area anymore. Actually I live on the other side of the globe, that means all the football games and hockey games I watch have to be purchased online, additionally there is all the Fighting Sioux merchandise I bought prior nickname going away in addition to the no nickname stuff i have bought and may continue to buy as finances and need allow, not to mention the thousands of dollars spent in tuition, room, and board while I was a student at the University. So please get off your high horse, or based on your avatar take off you cape, I along with the overwhelming majority of people who like and hate the new logo have done our part to support the university, and it is a bit presumptuous to assume that I or anyone else is obligated to buy new merchandise, with a logo that we do not like simply to support the University of North Dakota, if the university is that in need of funds I would personally rather write a check for 30 bucks than spend 30 bucks on a hat I don't like. As to your last assertion " The only ones you are supporting by purchasing this are the idiots that are selling this stuff." True the proceeds from the sale would not go to the university but instead, go to a local business that is printing a logo designed by a UND senior and future alumnus, which I sure can't be bad for his resume. As for the "idiots" comment I wouldn't say he is an idiot, the person already has a custom clothing business, so he is capitalizing on a segment of the public's distaste for the new UND logo with an alternative logo that many people do like, if I remember correctly someone else did that with the whole "Fighting Suhaki" thing, it didn't last forever, but I am sure they made some money off it. Now if you don't like it don't buy it, do what you want with your money, just as I will with mine. In reality, I probably won't be buying any of this because shipping from the US to Asia is expensive as $hit;.
  12. I doubt that the Arena issue is as big a deal for the WCHA, after all look at Ferris State's Arena, if seats just over 2000 students, though I have been told that when they have a full house it is one of the most intimating buildings to play in. WCHA wants to have a power 5 conference school in the conference and exposure on the pac-10 network so they would probably be willing to look the other way on the arena for the time being, that said I can see travel costs to AZ being a issue for the smaller schools that make up the WCHA.
  13. So has anyone heard anything about which conference ASU will be joining? I remember hearing that they were planning to announce just after the frozen four, but I still haven't heard jack other than the NCHC denying that they were going to add ASU. I know that the BigTen isn't going to add them, so its Either the NCHC or the WCHA. Also if either leauge were to get ASU do you think their would be any effort to get Air Force to leave Atlantic hockey to become either the 10th or 12th team?
  14. Couple of realities, 1. The Fighting Sioux Nickname is never coming back... it sucks but that is just reality. 2. The Fighting Hawks is what we are stuck with for the foreseeable future. 40 or 50 years down the line, who knows, but for now we are stuck with it. 3. They will not admit that they made a mistake this early on the logo. Its only been a week since they relieved the logo, they are not going to say "We fucked up" this early in the game. So we are stuck with Postal the Generic Hawk for now. 4. Changing logos is a much more realistic prospect than changing a nickname, sports teams and companies do it all the time for a number of reasons. So if we don't like the logo we can get them to change it, it won't happen tomorrow, but two years down the line is very possible. There are three things we can do to help change that. First and probably the best option is to put pressure on the alumni association to create an alternate logo for use by the alumni association. This is how we got the last fighting Sioux logo that was loved by the overwhelming majority of fans. The second thing we can do is to voice our disapproval, petitions, op-ed's and letters to the editor won't do a lot directly but they do help to build a case that a new logo is needed. The Final thing that can be done is don't by the new logo. This one is obviously controversial as some will associate refusing to buy the logo with not supporting the university. That said when it comes to apperal, team gear is not cheap, therefore as consumer If I do not want to spend my hard earned money on a gear bearing a logo I don't like that is not my fault. All three of these things working together could easily make the university decide to seek out an additional logo or replace the current logo in a few years time.
  15. Chop off that little part on the end of the "N" and you would have a tolerable shoulder patch, but I don't think it would work as a primary logo for hockey, But hey easy fix, just change the shoulder patches and keep the same jerseys till something better can be made.
  16. They just have North Dakota printed on the ice right now. I see no reason they would change it.
  17. We really won't know how the university will use the logo or how long the currently logo will be the primary until Kennedy takes over. I don't see the SME logo staying around as a primary for very long, they will probably make some subtle changes to it but I would imagine that they will probably be forced to create something new in the next couple of years especially if the new merch doesn't sell well. Also I seriously doubt this logo will ever make it onto a hockey jersey in any fashion. Hockey fans are still chanting Sioux forever, how would they react if the came into the Ralph and show that logo in the center of the ice, or jerseys bearing it on the racks. (That is assuming the englsted foundation lets them print the new logo on arena floor). The silver lining that a logo is simple to change, many teams do it on a regular basis. We won't be stuck with this logo forever, so lets quit trying to pretend its great, and lets quit acting like its the end of the world. The quicker the university realizes it needs to change the logo, the better it is for the fans, the players and the university.
  18. Just checked it is unfortunately still there. They won't give up on it this early.
  19. I voted for rough riders as well, it would have been easier to come up with something unique for the logo, but we are stuck with fighting hawks for the foreseeable future so best not to dwell on it. My bet is that the SME logo won't last as the primary logo for very long, and I would also guess the it will never be used except as a very small shoulder patch on the hockey Jerseys (if at all). I would speculate the the alumni foundation will get pressure to start looking for an alternative logo just like they did with the last Sioux logo.
  20. I think if it had the cure to cancer 99% of people would accept it but they would still be asking God "why?" when they got to the pearly gates. Just like I"m sure most people ask why mosquitoes were necessary and why Kevin Costner is so successful despite having no ability to emote.
  21. Melodramatic to be sure, though the fact that the university feels in needs to censor negative opinions by it athletes makes them look a bit pa
  22. Well I think the thing to keep in mind with the Bennett Brien Hawk logo is that it is a just a concept, if they had hired him to do the new logo their would have likely be several more permutations before submitted a final design or designs. It would have been the same thing with the other concepts submitted its likely that they would have made some adjustments to their original ideas. I think the Storrusten logo nailed the clean modern thing far better than SME did. As for the whole feathers thing... I honestly think that that in a few years it will be less of an issue then people think. But you could probably adjust the design slightly on the first logo to make it look like a wing and you'd be okay, as for the second one just remove the feathers (also tone down the agressive features on the eyes and beak).
  23. Well I wouldn't say lost, adding a new logo is a much much easier process, one that they will probably start on a lot quicker if the new logo doesn't perform well. Despite Bubba's call to embrace the new logo, I doubt people are going to be running out in droves to buy gear with the UND post offi... er I mean the fighting hawks logo. People will likely rush to buy up non nickname apparel. I almost want to believe the put out a logo they knew most of us would hate just so we would be focusing on getting a better fighting hawks logo, and not complaining about how much the new nickname sucks.
