  1. really cause that was a huge mind huck for 4 year old me.
  2. Same here, you know how hard it is to find good cake that isn't filled with red bean paste...
  3. Lol, I am living in Asia at the moment so its going to be whatever frosting I can find or make from scratch. Assuming the logo gets at least a C grade in my book.
  4. Love the logo, not a fan of the name. Though to be fair the logo would not have worked unless they had that name. Also while I will speculate the heck out of this I will reserve final judgment until I see it . If it blows me away or is decent I will bake a cake, write in icing a portion of my negative comments, and then eat the cake. Yes I will physically eat my words.
  5. First off Its not about the Sioux, I like most people have made peace with it not going to come back. However my own experience with people and groups from the east coast, both within the business and academic world, have almost always been that of the east cost group patronizing the group from the Midwest. So yea, maybe SME really put their all into it and came out with a good product. My own experience with has been that when a project or event is in Midwest it doesn't get the same level of importance or work as one on the coasts. So yea just my own personal experience here, so will admit I'm pretty biased in that regard.
  6. SME has there pay check do you honestly think that really care at this point. I seriously doubt that doing branding for UND is going be something they tout as a big accomplishment.
  7. If they did something like the Herald suggested in this article then I might be presently surprised. Still I am not optimistic, I would bet that SME just cashed the check and threw out a couple of generic logos. They are not going to spend too much time on a mid sized FCS school from the Midwest. http://www.grandforksherald.com/opinion/our-opinion/3959245-our-opinion-maybe-birds-maybe-not-fighting-hawks-logo-design
  8. If they wanted a mascot then we should have gone back to Flickertails. Even then the only way I could see it working is if the University bought the rights to the videogame character Conker and used him. Why you may ask, because he is so foul mouth and un-PC that most UND fans would love him simply because it would annoy the PC police that got the Fighting Sioux removed.
  9. I can't speak for football or basketball, but I am pretty sure if hockey fans reacted like this to the new nickname they won't react much better to putting some furry wearing a North Dakota jersey in the stands.
  10. How about we just forgo the cartoon mascot, I still hate the fact that the wild created that marketing abomination named Nordy.
  11. While dispassionate and open discussion on these issues would seem like a very appropriate subject for any university campus I can say from experience as instructor at division 2 and 3 institutions that these classes are more about teaching students "correct thought" on politically and socially sensitive issue rather than critical thinking or research. I know this is not a forum for politics so I will try and keep my deviation brief, basically almost all schools have adopted speech codes on campus. From what I can tell the original idea was to try and get students to have sense of decorum when debating issues and to keep extremely hateful group off campus, IE the KKK, Westbro Baptist, etc. Unfortunately in recent years many universities have expanded their codes to include a speech that could be found as offensive, unnerving or disagreeable to any portion of the students. This means that speakers or groups have been disallowed because of political viewpoints and academic views on subject such as but not limited to feminism, poverty, foreign affairs, social justice, economics, Etc. If you want to know more I suggest looking at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE). Using their ratings system both Wisconsin and UND have a yellow rating which is not good but still not the worst.
  12. Has anyone heard any news on which conference ASU will be joining?
  13. So we find out next week. We'll see how they did, My personal bet is on something generic and boring. I sincerely hope to be eating those words when the logo is reveled but I am not optimistic. http://www.wdaz.com/news/north-dakota/4055839-unveiling-new-und-logo-only-few-days-away
  14. I would bet June 30th if for no other reason than I think Ed wants this to be wrapped up by the time the new president takes over. Besides Ed know that the logo probably isn't going to get a very positive reception, unless the Firm they hired did something really out of the box, which I doubt, I think that its better if people have the chance to react and get most of the initial Bile out of their system before school and football season starts.
  15. Overall budget - and I have checked on that, as for the hockey budget I am not sure, I don't have the time to check into that.
  16. Sorry I watched the Blind Side last night so its stuck in my head.
  17. UND probably has a higher hockey budget because of donations, however UND has a budget that is about the same as Tech or MNSU. I'm not trying to diminish the Status of UND's program, UND Hockey is to college hockey what Alabama or Ole Miss is too college football. I just don't want us to get too high on the proverbial horse. Lest we forget that just a few years ago UND was a D2 school in every sport except hockey.
  18. Would vote to reduce? Bowling Green literally saved its program from closing up not long ago, Tech has one of the oldest programs in college hockey, Minnesota State's arena underwent major modernization and renovation of its facilities. Its safe to say these programs are planning on continuing to play D1 for the long haul. As far as budgets go keep in mind many of these schools have a larger budget than UND. MNSU and UND actually have pretty much the same budget and size. The BG10 as a whole doesn't really care about hockey, Michigan State and Ohio State haven't been good for quite some time and their is very little interest at these schools in hockey, Wisconsin finished the year 3 places in front of lake superior state and the Kohl Center has become a ghost town. Minnesota and Michigan have also had marginal success in post season play. The b10 can recover but its a question of how long it will take, The U of M is resting on past accomplishments at this point, eventually prospects will look to go elsewhere if the U of M can't recover.
  19. Gotta at least give Ed this, he isn't trying to pretend that the name is anything other than what it is, generic and bland. But I would agree that he is omitting the larger role that Kelley and the Committee played in selecting the nicknames.
  20. Well they're almost done, so I guess we can get ready to do one of three things, cringe, be pleasantly surprised, or remain indifferent. My bet is on either cringe or remain indifferent. http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/education/4046532-schafer-und-logo-development-down-two-options
  21. I seriously doubt the bigten would ever offer UND anything substantial to be a hockey affiliate. The Big10 hockey conference was just supposed to be a quick and easy cash grab. Take what they viewed as four of the most elite programs in the country and become an instant powerhouse. The fact that they had to add Notre Dame shows how desperate they are, but they were able to get Notre Dame to switch simply because Notre Dame already hated playing in Hockey East. As far as I know UND is quite happy with playing in NCHC. Tthey might have better luck poaching a member from the WCHA but I doubt any of the schools they would want would go. I'm not sure if the Bigten would have an interest in Ferris State or Bowling Green, Plus with Bowling Green being a FBS school their could be inter-conference issues. I have heard some talk about Michigan Tech but I'm not sure if the Huskies would want the move as the new WCHA is full of Michigan teams, Including Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State which are relativity short bus trips from Huntington. Minnesota State would be another option that I think Minnesota and Wisconsin would like just because of close traveling proximity. However as some one who has worked at for MNSCU I can tell you their is no love lost between MNSCU and the University of Minnesota. the U of M generally has spent the last 50 years trying to keep the State colleges from evolving beyond teaching colleges. I don't expect that Minnesota State, Saint Cloud, or Bemidji will go out of there way to do anything that helps the U of M. There would have to be a lot of back room negotiations to get Minnesota State to leave the WCHA and a lot of money, probably the same for Michigan Tech, tech would probably want more because it is the custodian of the McNaughton Cup and getting Tech would mean that Big10 would have the McNaughton cup as its regular season trophy. The BG10 is a conference of has-been programs in rapid decline. As I have said before being both a UND alum and Minnesota State Alum I am getting a little bit of Schadenfreude watching the U of M and the big ten struggle and fail. The Bigten is just a bad product and after seeing how few games are actually broadcast on the Bigten network its biggest supposed advantage is dubious at best. Either the BGten needs to make improvement a priority or they need to find a way to make it a quasi independent conference still affiliated with the Bigten but given independence to seek out hockey only members and to not be bound to the bigten network only. However I doubt the BG10 thinks of hockey as a priority in any meaningful way..
