The red t-shirt is cool; but, I'm enjoying reading 14.2.4 of my NCAA Division I manual. That says the conferences administer the hardship waivers (14.2.4.2). They'll go by what the book says is my guess. More importantly, this conversation is too much of a downer. How about we talk about how MarkMac is going to heal wonderfully and be back on the ice in four weeks instead.

Folks, the NCAA give priority to "off campus" sites. Nobody in the Midwest Region bid except Notre Dame and they bid using their "on campus" site -- the NCAA had no option. In the West, UND bid using REA as a site and UND bid using Scheel's as a site -- the NCAA took the "off campus" site, and, in the process I'd argue, left about 6000 tickets times three games on the table. For an organization of academic institutions, the NCAA ain't too smart.

We're playing semantics with the word "apply" I suspect. As things stand now, Mark qualifies for the medical provision (this season not counting as a "season of competition") if he doesn't play another game. It'd be allowed per NCAA rules as written. To me that's not "apply" (meaning ask for); it's a notification to the NCAA that we're enacting and following this rule as written. One would "apply" (ask for) a sixth season for some athletes under unique circumstances (and that's why those are rare).

That would contradict what the Insiders bloggers put out (however, upon further review they are hedging talking about "dinged" and wanting to see how practice goes Tuesday).

He wouldn't have to "apply". You have five academic years to complete four seasons of competition. He never redshirted so his "academic years" clock is on four. A season "counts" if you play in more than 30% of scheduled games or if you play in any game in the second half of the season. (Mark's used three "seasons of competition".) Given that MarkMac played in six games (5 plus exhibition) so far, and that there are more than 30 games on the schedule this isn't a "season of competition" for him yet. Would he want to come back? Would he need to (would Habs want him to) to make sure he's healed? But we are way ahead of ourselves on this. Let's see where he's at when he's cleared by his doctors. Given that they did surgery right away, I suspect he has some significant OT/PT to get through.

My best guess given that timeline: He might be able to do walk throughs in spring ball. (Face it, it's November.) Given the state of PT/OT and rehab and technology, I'd rather have to deal with a knee than an Achilles.

Looking at bios (yeah, yeah, but that's all there is) I'd say Idowu would be the option. Why? I don't want to give up the best DB (Tillman). Harris is a freshman. I'm not sure that's a good thing to do to a freshman. I don't see that Ivery played QB in HS (Garland TX). And Idowu is a chemical engineering major --> he's probably well suited to quickly picking up an offense (no disrespect intended to the others).

OK, ugly question to follow but I'll ask it anyway. I'll set it up first with, we already have a RB (who played FB in HS) who was a LB here but converted back to offense. We're down to Bartles, Hanson, and Studsrud. If Hanson's not good enough for a game we shouldn't be calling him a QB and giving him QB reps in practice. I do not want to pull a red shirt with four weeks left, so no, Studsrud is out of the picture until spring ball in my mind. Is there someone else on the roster who played QB in HS who could run a few snaps. (Normally one of the safeties or WRs played QB in HS.)
