Here we agree. Wrong climate. Wrong facility. (This is where I normally go on a diversion about how lacrosse makes much more sense for UND: we have facilities in Alerus and the ITF; we could recruit Canada where the sport is huge, and the Twin Cities where the sport is growing; we'd probably get more (Canadian visitor) fans out for one game than we get for a season for baseball.)

I don't disagree that women's hockey is pure "red ink", but, given Title IX compliance was a hidden driver behind womens hockey, what's your solution to keep UND in compliance with the Federal law called Title IX?

OPEC raises production, price drops, we take the sucker play of cheap oil today and they control us. The US stops drilling, stops building pipelines and infrastructure, and then OPEC cuts production, prices rise, and OPEC controls us. Sounds like win-win for OPEC (down and up) ... unless the US controls what's its to control.

In a word: Wisconsin. They've had solid football, basketball, hockey, ... and women's hockey programs at the same time. Now I'm not saying UND can be at the Wisconsin level in all those, but Wisconsin can be a template for how to be successful in many areas at once.

I really can't poke any holes in that article/argument. If your aren't winning you'd better have some other draw (like a shiny new or upgraded facility). Proof? What was UND Hockey's record the first year in the new REA? (Hint: < 0.500) I do wonder why the GF Herald is interested in getting football back on campus. You saw GFC Redskins gear while they had no name. Then, after they adopted the Knights name, the Redskins gear slowly faded away replaced with Knights gear. That is precisely the same situation.

If hockey wasn't performing and selling 11,000 tickets per home game one would have to question the emphasis on hockey. But it is, and it's the fiscal engine right now. I think it was Coach Wooden that said, "You can't build something up by tearing something else down." How about we worry about building up and not 'blaming' other programs inside the house.
