Busted brackets? I learned my lesson a couple-three-or-so decades ago: I was working on a grad project using Monte Carlo simulation so I had access to a pretty solid random number generator. I came up with a weighted process, generated at that time 63 random numbers, and followed the process for each game round by round to fill out a bracket. I then made my picks. I turned in two brackets. I came in bottom half of over 200. The random number generator came in third.

Last night in STL: Hartman scores 4th MIN goal in 7 minutes of game clock, makes it 5-4 MIN, ... but bumps Binny on the way by after the goal. Binny goes after Hartman with punch (edge of blocker, major and game). Everyone grabs a dance partner ... including ... Flower coming 200 feet to Binny's crease to dance! Refs prevent the goalie fight however. The only way that could be better? It was wrasslin' night in STL! Ric Flair was in the house!

How Frisch (with his above average skating and right-shot*) wasn't drafted still baffles me. *About 2/3 of the NHL are left shots.

Goaltending is becoming what I fear: We keep going to the portal for a quick fix. How about we recruit and develop and get the goalie pipeline where it should be. I'll take another portal this year as we have no options, but I need to see the pipeline built back up.

Key word: Rare. To me the portal could quickly become an addictive drug: Quick fix that makes you feel good short term but creates chronic problems.

To your point, the defense this off-season could be a real conundrum. If we need five, we've kept 4, 24, and likely 15 (or less likely 25). You bring the five in the pipeline. If we need six, depending on the two left standing, you could bring in six from the pipeline or five and a portal. If we need seven or (gasp) eight ... yeah, the portal is no longer an option, it's necessity. That's how I think the portal should be used: necessity.
