Wisconsin follows NCAA "best practices" when scheduling. That means Wisconsin won't schedule teams under NCAA sanction. FSU is not under sanction. UND is.

Implicit in this question is the belief that Hak was pressured. I know people who deal with Faison daily. Pressure tactics is not how Brian operates. Remember: he has to have a working relationship with his coaches. Ultimatum tactics don't make for good relationships. And as far as Hak, his convictions are the hockey program (his program) first, then the rest. Something, something precious, has become a detriment, a net negative, to the program. As precious as it may be, the program comes first, even for Hak. If you didn't hear Schlossman on "Dizzo's Den" last night you missed Brad saying that he's never heard Hak say something he didn't believe in and that Hak would say nothing before saying something he didn't believe in.

With that statement, Terry Wanless demonstrated why nobody should take seriously anything he says about the Fighting Sioux nickname issue. Throughout this whole episode, what has the NCAA done that's been remotely "reasonable," beginning with the enactment of the hypocritical anti-American Indian nicknames policy by a few members of a committee who blatantly bypassed the organization's bylaws? To do this, the NCAA ignored a US Department of Education on-campus investigation of UND that found no racism. Despite that, the NCAA arbitrarily and publicly declared the university "hostile and abusive" to American Indians. The NCAA broke a pre-existing contract with UND by trying to force the university to cover all the nicknames and logos displayed in Engelstad Arena during the 2006 NCAA West Regional tournament in Grand Forks. The NCAA ignored repeated invitations by UND's administration to attend athletic events and see for themselves how the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo are used. When all UND needed was one tribe's permission to gain the namesake exemption, the NCAA ignored the Spirit Lake Tribal Council's official resolution which approved UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. And isn't Emmert the guy who agreed to come to UND to discuss the nickname issue, then canceled the meeting without providing any explanation? Is that evidence of a reasonable Mark Emmert? When a delegation from North Dakota went to the NCAA's headquarters to visit with the organization's top officials, the NCAA didn't budge an inch. What signs have there been showing that the NCAA under Emmert's leadership has been any more reasonable, flexible or accomodating about the nickname issue than it was under Myles Brand's leadership? None. Zero. Zip. Nada. Zilch. Finally, whatever happened to NCAA VP Bernard Franklin's visit to UND? If Emmert really wanted Franklin to come to UND to discuss the situation, he would have been here by now. It's yet another example of the NCAA's ongoing "when we want your opinion, we'll give it to you" attitude that's characterized this entire fiasco. Either Wanless is hopelessly naive and out of touch or he's being purposely disingenuous and misleading for a reason. Anyone who gives an ounce of credence to Wanless' statements is being played for a fool.

I always hope for "win at home, 0.500 on the road" for all the teams. There's some work to be done on that.

Playing FSU is acceptable under NCAA "best practices". The University of North Dakota is under NCAA moniker sanctions. UND does not have the requisite tribal approvals. Playing UND is not acceptable under NCAA "best practices". There is the difference. Now, if a school chose to ignore "best practices" and scheduled SanctionedTeamA but chose not to schedule SanctionedTeamB, so what? Their schedule. Their call. Scheduling a game is agreeing to a contract: it takes two willing parties.

Knowing what I know of Dave Hakstol, if he was given an ultimatum (change your tune or you're gone), he'd walk. Listen to what Hak said. He got a reality check from Wisconsin. They've said the 2013 game contract is off if the name stays and UND is under NCAA sanction. Dave loves the name, but he loves the program more.

If we can question the mechanism or motives of Hakstol, why shouldn't we question the mechanism or motives of Wanless? Wanless was run out of UND. Is he above giving bad advice and getting the last laugh at UND's expense?

However, the "efficient and economical administration" part may win the day also. How? To put together an independent schedule in football means lots and lots of big dollar guarantees. Doing what is necessary to stay off NCAA sanction make scheduling costs drop dramatically and allows for the potential of post-season home game revenues.

The irony? While SL was putting out that emotion-driven statement, Dave Hakstol was putting out a fact-based statement, pesky facts like Wisconsin will not honor the contract for games scheduled for 2013 if UND is under NCAA sanctions due to still carrying the Fighting Sioux moniker.

The message of that song would be the message of the team: Don't fear the Reaper; just accept that sooner or later the Reaper takes everything.

For a while folks wanted to tip the cap to the second large group to live in this area, namely the Scandenavian / Northern European immigrants. Those folks share a common mythology. The most powerful warrior that Norse/Germanic mythos carried a weapon called Mjolnir. Officially be the Mjolnir (translation: the crusher). What is Mjolnir in common language (meaning what could be the alternate name for the teams)? The War Hammer. (It'd be like "Bison" and "Herd" as some other college.) But I'm sure the NCAA'd say we'd need family approval from a former UND defenseman with the first name Trevor. It's not bad, but I still kind of like "Reaper" as it hits both past and present in the region (old harvesters and new UAVs). And yes, the black jerseys would be a whole lot of fun ...

You're running under your hypothesis of what they'd do. We have Minnesota and Wisconsin on record stating they'll follow their policy with regard to North Dakota. That's the reality we have to live in and with.

Did they forget that the State of ND sent a delegation to the NCAA offices this summer and nothing could be worked out with that "reasonable man" Emmert. PS - Can we make a pact to never mention that site again? We're giving it credence and credibility by mentioning it.

If the original law, Carlson's Folly, is deemed unconstitutional, would it not seem that ruling would also make the repeal law of Carlson's Folly unconstitutional also? If the NDSC finds the Legislature had no business making monikers because they have no power over monikers, that would seem to apply to making, unmaking, and not making, wouldn't it? President Kelley had already answered the logo and nickname questions: the logo is the interlocked ND and the nickname is "UND" or "North Dakota" for the time being. (Remember: the NCAA views schools by formal name, in this case the University of North Dakota, so either UND or North Dakota works as a "nickname".)
