Warriors is a strong name. As it was used in Europe and in Japan. How about the University of North Dakota Medieval Warriors. The fan club would be the Warrior Nation. The mascot would have a sword in his hand.

If anyone watched the Boise State?/Hawaii game the other night you have to wonder why Hawaii gets away with using "Warriors". A white guy dressed up and whoo-hoo'ing in "native" fashion, similar chants by the fans. All acceptable by the NCAA but not Fighting Sioux as used by UND. It's reasons like this, and as mksioux pointed out, the crappy nickname we are likely to be stuck with if a change is made, that makes fighting this battle worth it. Not to mention the freedom of speech issues, etc.

I also wonder if the same "continental US borders of the 20th century" exception that San Diego State gets for "Aztecs" applies to the Warriors or Rainbow Warriors or whatever Hawaii calls themselves these days?

If you want a case study on how not to handle a nickname change (and I'm not sure there is a good way to handle it-but there's definitely a bad way) then see Marquette. They dumped Warriors a few years back, and the PC zealots ( :D ) can't quite understand why the public isn't warming up to their bland replacement name, "Golden Eagles". They even tried to shove just plain "Marquette Gold" down their alumni/students throats for a summer, with laughable results. When that didn't work, they went right back to Golden Eagles-about six months after they had listed out all the reasons why they thought that Golden Eagles was NOT a good choice. :D

Same people writing the same tired stuff they've been writing for years. yawn.gif

Incidents of racism at UND is acedontal no hard evidence just implied, but it still just as credible. UND is a horrible place, so that is why enrollment is at an alltime high.

Actually, hasn't it gone down?
