Since my comment apparently sparked this pi$$ing match about whether DI hockey is more popular than DI-AA football (I don't believe for a minute that it is), allow me to restate my original point which some apparently missed: UND's DI hockey program attracts more attention worldwide and creates more publicity than any athletic program at NDSU.

I think they both get attention!

Well myself and most people can't get any of those channels. Like I said before, I had the opportunity to watch 5 or 6 aa football games on T.V. this year, the same with most people. The people that can even get some of those channels on their T.V. are still not going to stop there channel surfing to watch aa football. Not when they can watch real DI football on a more popular channel.

Sorry FargoBison, but your post on 126 games DOES include regional stations that most of the country doesn't get. I had DirecTV sports pack last year and many of those stations aren't on it. In fact, many are nothing other than local cable sports stations very similar to how Fighting Sioux Sports Network is distributed. If I need a certain brand of cable (COX) to get a game, then it is not national.

This year I have digital cable with the college sports add on stations from fox and CSTV. While there are DIAA FB games on it, there is hockey throughout the season as well. Plus hockey plays two games a week and has a longer season.

Finally, while hockey is not popular throughout the country like FB is, hockey has far more recognizable names than DIAA FB. At least hockey has real DI teams playing it, unlike DIAA. Sorry DIAA FB is not DI in my book and even if the Sioux join it I'll say the same thing.

Didn't the DII championship game have better TV ratings than DIAA? Serious question.

If you had the direct tv sports pack you got 18 of those networks listed above, I'm not sure about cableone though because I have direct tv. I have only never heard of three of those networks listed above but the person who put this list togather said this, "GAMES LISTED ARE THOSE AVAILABLE NATIONALLY OR REGIONALLY VIA CABLE AND / OR SATELLITE PROVIDERS.. WE HAVE ONLY LISTED REGIONALLY BROADCAST GAMES THAT ARE EITHER AVAILABLE NATIONALLY VIA SATELLTE OR HAVE A BROAD CABLE AVAILABILITY OUTSIDE OF JUST ONE STATE OR LOCAL AREA."

Real DI team? What in the heck does that mean. NDSU is a real DI team, UNI is a real DI team, all of IAA contains real DI teams. I can't say the same about hockey which contains a division of half DI teams and half non-DI. And those "real DI's" you talk about for some of them hockey is consider a minor sport and is in the shadow of both basketball and football. I'm not going to say hockey isn't DI even though half of the division is not D1 and I don't understand how IAA isn't DI because all of the teams are DI.

Thanks for proving my point. DirecTV is by far the best national sports coverage. It's good because of all the regional stations. You just said you only get 18 of the 24 listed. Even if you minus the repeats of the three combined Fox College Sports stations, you still don't get 3 stations. Like I said before, way to list non-national stations.

Also for ESPN Gameplan you have to pay-per-view to watch a game. Good pick for a national station though I suppose you could say the same about the rest of the stations, but at least you can watch them all day.

You've come on this site proclaiming the greatness of DIAA TV. Prove it. You need to find all the games you were able to watch for DI-AA fb and hockey on DirecTV including sports pack. Then find amount of games played in each sport. Take the # on TV and divide it by the total so that we can compare by %.

5,000 to 12,000? I'm calling your bluff. No way any Gophers home hockey game draws as few as 5,000 unless you're referring to the womens team. Gopher mens hockey tickets are all sold out before the first game, as they are at UND. If you want to attend a game, you have to know somebody with season tickets or get them from a scalper.

I found the 2005 attendance. 179,636 total with an average of 10,566. Pretty close to that of hockey.

What bothers me in this whole debate is that there is no right or wrong answer however you feel whether there is a big gap or a little one all I can say about 1AA is that the people are supporting it, how many people were at UND's last playoff game, If I remember there was under 5,000! what was SU's average draw, for a team that wasn't even eligible for postseason, like 10,000+

well...I'M JUST GLAD ??? we could provide so many Bison fans a place to talk about sports in the apparent DERTH of REAL COMPETITIVE sports action they've got going on at MOO-U! I'm sure it's been a LONG MEDIOCRE ROAD.... :D

What...your barely .500 basketball teams don't provide enough CUDD for you dopes to chew on??* ??? You need to come on here and defend the "HONOR" of di-aa?? (I'm wearing my APPALACHIAN EMERGENCY ROOM di-aa CHAMPIONSHIP SHIRT RIGHT NOW:-)

(* - now don't flip out you Bison dorks....i'll bet most of you didn't think I could even hold my tongue this long...did you?? --- who loves ya baby!!! )

...HEY JIM!...perhaps we should restrict all NDSU posters to say....1 LITTLE TINY FORUM where everyone can pile on and make fun of them!

I think SIOUXSPORTS is much too important to be bothered by these supposed "division one" unknowns - they don't even have a conference NEVER MIND a name in REAL division one sports!

Can't we agree to (like apparently they have) KEEP OUT THE RIFFRAFF? ??? (love ya Tony!!)

Hey, All I did was make a suggestion - a completely innocuous one. I thought it was probably a bad idea to keep saying that DI-AA football is no better than DII until you know for sure that UND is staying in DII. Why? First, it doesn't make DI-AA sound that attractive which in turn could make it harder to raise the money needed to double UND's football budget. Second, suppose UND does go DI and has a couple 6-5 seasons or even a losing season or two. Before you say that's improbable, remember that NDSU and UND both have had losing seasons within the last five years in DII. Besides, UC Davis, SDSU, UNC, and NDSU all were right around 6-5 this year - and NDSU was predicted to finish 6-5. UC Davis had to beat Stanford to break .500. NDSU, UNC, and SDSU have all got blown out and shut out at least once in the last two years. SDSU might not have been a contender very often in the NCC and UNC might have been up and down but I don't remember them being on the losing end of scores like 0-44, 0-38, 0-31, 12-42, 0-52, or 7-63 within the last decade. While I think UND would be competitive in every game against DI-AA opponents, that might not translate into winning seasons.

Anyway, if UND goes DI-AA and has a losing season or two (something that gets a little more likely if you jump right into an established conference), attendance and fund-raising will suffer more if you do not accept beforehand that the road to competitiveness in DI-AA might not be easy or short.

And, for the record, I have always disagreed with NDSU fans who slam DII football and the NCC. Personally, I think its a slap in the face to all the kids who worked their guts out to bring back championships for NDSU and UND. It's kind of like slamming hockey (and, btw, "How do you get a UND fan to talk about hockey? Try talking about football ??? ). Anyway, it's totally unnecessary and not very neighborly.

Then again, I think maybe the folks most vocal about DI-AA being the same or worse than DII are the ones most committed to keeping UND in DII (e.g. Roger Thomas and President Kupchella).

Moderator please hang on to all of these posts because unless you live under a rock everyone knows that UND will be 1AA in a few years, like it or not they just have to go! I am one of those odd ducks who is a fan of both programs, and when they used to play each other I would just cheer for a good game, I want to see what some of these negative people that are so against 1AA say when their team is 1AA!

I will say there is a difference in the level of plays in D-II and DI-AA with DI-AA being the better of the two. However, I will also say both UND and NDSU have programs capable of being DI-AA contenders. In NDSU's case, they aren't far from that right now. In UND's case, they need to make the commitment to DI-AA football if they (mainly their fans) want to say they could be competitive in DI-AA football and that it isn't much better than DII football.

I also want to say I find it pathetic how both NDSU fans and UND fans can't stop the petty bickering. Go to Bisonville, and all you read about is how "Bison are supreme" and DII means nothing (even though the Bison made their name in D2 and have a storied history in D2). I find that hypcrisy appalling. Point that out on Bisonville and you get banned for being objective and not seeing things through rosey glasses.

Why can't the fans go back to supporting their own team instead of constantly ripping on their old rival and call that supporting their team?

Sioux Sports does a much better job being about Sioux than Bisonville does being about the Bison. Heck, Bisonville has a whole thread devoted to UND...even though the whole board is basically about UND. At least Siouxsports hasn't gone that road.

Its time for objectivity to return to both Siouxsports and Bisonville and time for all the "homers" to stop being so obnoxious and brash.

Is that too much to wish for? Afterall, we are all North Dakota sports lovers.

Go back? I wasn't aware that they ever just supported their own team without ripping on their old rival. I'm interested to know what years those were?

When did cheering/attending UND for NDSU start to make someone a "ND sports lover"?

Your entitled to you opinion about a minor sport of hockey that the casual sports fan could care less about. My opinion is that NDSU's athletic programs are much more visible on a national level now since they went to DI schedules, playing all sports in all parts of the country!!

From Bisonville in yet another UND thread. Would these guys just drop their pants and get this measurement BS over with. C'mon. This is the pathetic stuff I was referring too. Its a disgrace to UND, NDSU and the state of North Dakota....
