Overall, it’s been very good this year. Create TO’s and avoid penalties and KO team can be a difference maker. The measure of success for a punter and punt team is net yds/punt. Punting and Punt coverage has been very good. KO return and Punt return are easier to break down. No turnovers, no penalties, don’t let punts hit the ground unless inside your own 5yd line. The guys have done well so far this year. Punt blocks, FG/XP blocks are a great bonus and we have done well so far. Missing XP’s, getting a kick blocked, missing FG’s is usually one guy missing their assignment. To continue to struggle with FG’s or XP’s is usually mental. Good luck solving that. It has happened to All-pro kickers who have a bad few games, get cut and are back the next year as an all-pro. That’s tough to solve at college level during mid-season. The issue is its been two years of poor kicking now with no changes, everything else has been great punting has been a big surprise. But point after and FG inside 35 shouldn't be on edge of our seat, they need to either recruit better or get a transfer in. Hes okay but not good. 1 Quote

Here are the actual numbers to back this up for opponents average starting field position on kickoffs: KSU - 28 (29 on non-touchbacks, 44 yarder at the end hurt) PSU - 21 (19 on non-touchback, plus one turnover) UM - 23 (21 on non-touchbacks, UM had a PF penalty to lower the average) Valpo - 21 (17 on non-touchbacks, Valpo had a holding penalty to lower average) UNI - 25 (24 on non-touchbacks) Season - 23 (22 on non-touchbacks with one turnover) Being that touchbacks move the ball to the 25, other than KSU, the non-touchback strategy seems to be working with the bonus of creating an extra position with a turnover. Some of the "touchbacks" were actually fair catches inside the 25 that move the ball out to the 25, so they are counted the same. Tied for 7th in the nation with 3 blocked kicks Tied for 1st in the nation with 0 blocked kicks allowed 6th in the nation for avg net punting yards (41.95) and T16 for Avg Punt Return Allowed (11 for 44 yards) 2 2 Quote

My guess is you are both missing the point right now.. if @jdub27 thinks our kicking has been decent then you need to roll in fgs as well as xp.. FG has been terrible this year. Clearly over the last 3 years xp has been solid. CJ was quite decent last year. I thought he would be better this year.. he hasn’t been. for @SIOUXFAN97 to say the special teams sucks.. at least this year the data doesn’t come close to bearing that out. Punting has been good/great.. punt blocs have been awesome.. kickoffs have been good.. but the kicker has struggled. personally I’m just hoping the kicking game improves to the point that I can beat the rush to the coors lite sales guy instead of holding my breath and hoping. 2 1 Quote

It can come back pretty fast for him and he has been better the last few games. A little recency bias here because his stats last year were actually pretty good. From the MVFC web page UND was 14/19 on fg. Tied for 3rd in % at 73.7% UND was 44/45 on XPT. 97.8% 1 1 Quote

Would agree on the FG kicking needing to be more consistent, particularly this year and especially from a shorter distance. But blanket comparisons are tough on those unless you start breaking it down by distance and then get into the wider hash's for college, etc. They do need to figure it out as it helps with a true risk/reward scenario when you are comfortable the 3 points are almost automatic if you don't go for a 4th down conversion. The only reason XP's came up was because it was specifically mentioned that UND has been lacking in that the last 3-4 seasons. Averaging 1 miss a year doesn't seem to fit that narrative. 100% would be great. 41 minutes ago, SIOUXFAN97 said: who? Reid. The guy you specifically stated issues started after he left. Since the spring Covid season, UND is hitting XP's at 98% clip. I don't think that is an issue. That's about as automatic as you are going to find. Agree that FG's from 40 and in need to be way more consistent. 2 1 Quote

What the data above really shows is that our offense has not been the problem and it looks like it’s on track to be even better this year. If Schmitty can keep the defense rolling we have a real chance. 1 Quote
