Yeah I’m aware of Canadas ages, fine unless your kid is a Dec birthdate. They’ll get lost like their hockey players do.

I will say, if a MN kid is born in June or July, or even early August….they had the chance to enter K at 5. Its parents holding back, not teachers in almost all cases. When I grew up 9/1 was the start date for K. Now it seems it’s 6/1 to follow the MN hockey age cutoff 

Whats even more wild, look out east…I just saw a 2030 grad with a January birthdate at 15 natty camp. Nuts

i just looked it up. In MN kids have to be 5 by 9/1 which is when they’d start. I’m not for or against btw, I just noticed the trend the past ten years or so. I’d holdback with my kids, especially boys. What the east coasters are doing is wild though.

The old kindergarten redshirt program lol.  Its why you have to look at actual birthday and who the competition is so closely....

Really hope we can close the deal with Thompson. I think he's got the potential to be the best player on this list when all is said and done.

Does anyone know anything about Schemenauer and if we're in the mix? I've never seen him play, but Schlossman describes him as a "big, physical defenseman with a mean streak" which sounds like a Sioux defenseman if I've ever seen one

Very very athletic, IQ is just ok. But he could be an extremely effective defender on the way up.

Love Schemenauer's game.  I wouldn't label him as just physical and mean.  He is highly athletic and shows good offensive instincts too.  I love his upside too.

SCPA and I both called out the athleticism...there's a reason he ate big minutes in the Lake conference and made the NTDP!

Some of the stuff posted here is so off the rails.

I have a June 2011...when we started him in school, sports considerations weren't even a discussion or variable, much less hockey. We didn't know or care about our first born's sports acumen at 4 or 5 years old, or that he would even play sports at all.

If those are variables on when to start your kid in scool, you're doing it wrong in my opinion. They'll either be good enough or not.

I think you misunderstood what I was writing there...the lol is made in jest regarding the people who do the kindergarten redshirt and actually contemplate it at 4/5

My comment on looking at the competition was about after the fact and that a 17 year old senior and a 19 year old senior are not the same and neither is one conference or league the same as the other in terms of competition

Now people are transferring their kids for 8th grade in order to repeat it. All parent driven, nobody actually wants that stigma for themselves.

I think holding kids back is more about maturity + confidence (at least hopefully that's why you're doing it) That extra year of maturity helps all throughout HS with education/sports IMO or whatever the kid ends up doing + entering college freshman year a little more mature in theory. (nothing wrong if you go the other way either everyone has their own choice)

From my perspective, it’s smart. Be older for sport and school. The older you are (in theory) the more mature you are. The book outliers presents it in facts that are basically indisputable.

Thompson it appears went other direction here.  Elite Prospects shows him as August of 2010.  He was a freshman so he turned 15 a couple weeks before he started high school, but he accelerated; so he is still 15 right now... but is now going into his junior year.  He appears to be aligning things so he graduates from high school and the NTDP, potentially gets drafted in the NHL, and starts NCAA hockey all in the same summer.  I realize he's a different case study as he is a top prospect in his sport, but it seems like he started kindergarten as an older kid, then adjusted.

I personally think it leads to misleading sports stats because you're artificially creating an environment that allows you to stat pad against younger competition. I'd rather challenge myself athletically than make it easier

Yep…but that happens all the way up. At youth ages the Q1 kids do better, at juniors the older guys do better. Some peewees/bantams hit puberty early and dominate. You have to watch between the lines. Kids that have translatable skills that work from level to level. Some have it all the way up.

As far as the level you’re playing at, some kids need to be pushed up levels, some kids need some confidence to flourish. It’s a wild ride.

Yes but the early bday kids don't get to choose that, hockey being a birth year sport makes sense. Holding your kid back a grade to be able to stat pad in school based sports is cheating IMHO.

Ya I get that, I was coming from more of a scouts angle. They need to watch the translatable moments/skills. Not only effectiveness…for the reasons I listed.

in mn they play at grade level with cutoff being 6/1 (not HS). So if you’re a summer birthday it pays to hold back/start K when they’re older. Better for school too. If they turn out to be elite you just accelerate school.
