Only if he earns it and Schmidt and Freuchte think he gives them the best chance to win. He can prove himself during spring ball, his summer work and continuing to prove himself next fall. The same opportunity is there for the other 3  QB’s.
Johnson appears to have the skills schools are looking for, but whoever starts will need to earn the job.

Expand

For sure he has to earn it, but like I said, we’re getting fleeced if he’s not QB1…

Probably wouldn’t be that confident in predicting the future, but it’s okay to predict that Javance Tupouata-Johnson will the starting quarterback come August 30th (talent does in fact matter). That is my prediction as well, but Romfo, Kaminski, Sulik, etc. will get their shot.

Offense coaching staff is mostly the same. Head coach will have his hands full with D. Hard to see much changing at QB unless injuries.

Last year QB1 could not lose his job so I guess we will see if this year is different. It was crazy to go from using to 2 or 3 QB on 3rd down etc., to using only one QB no matter how down hill the season went.

There was plenty of opportunities to give him a chance but clearly the HC and OC made up their mind his spot was on the bench.

Romfo better not have the starting job automatically again in 2025. If he can't make the throws an FCS QB needs to make to keep defenses honest, then I hope he doesn't still get the job strictly because of "completion percentage during practice".

Johnson will be QB1. Romfo QB2 with packages for Romfo in game 1 to keep in happy and fresh and ready if Johnson struggles or gets hurt.

They are but  I’m done arguing. You obviously didn’t watch the Aztecs defense last year or a UND game last year. If UND brought in a D coordinator that would dramatically improve the outlook. I will say I was completely wrong on how successful Jake Landry was the past year so hopefully some good coaches emerge for UND if they are doing to improve.

What does this mean? “not much changing” is not how I would put it at all

Offensive staff has changed (new TE coach, new WR coach, new RB coach) and the OC/QB coach and OL coach have been at UND only one season and didn’t have a chance to recruit to their respective positions in 2024.

Since last season, UND football acquired possibly their most highly touted division 1 football player to date (HS offers from Oregon, Florida State, BYU, Arizona State, Kansas, Pittsburgh, Nevada, San Jose State, San Diego State; https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/college/und-football-snags-san-diego-state-transfer-quarterback?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR39Tooldbc4k9y07YpPV35LKgYpmALuX58NKFj5kiBlqUfTOc73d5xfDqc_aem_pyPwi9LXS0HA35hHT8yH9Q), in addition to a great high school athlete from Council Bluffs, IA (https://fightinghawks.com/news/2024/12/4/football-north-dakota-announces-23-additions-during-early-signing-period.aspx)

In addition, Simon Romfo, Jerry Kaminski, and Jack Sulik will be 1-year more experienced in the system. The offensive line will be also largely intact and 1-year more experienced.

I expect the quarterback position as a unit to take a huge step forward in terms of play in 2025 compared to 2024. You all should too.

Why would you want your QB1 to fail? Sounds like Monday Morning amateur quarterbacking to me …

Using multiple quarterbacks is not ideal to the majority. If this is your stance, we respectively disagree.

This is not an unreasonable take, but it’s far too early to commit to this.

Yes. Johnson will be QB1 unless he gets hurt. Last years offensive scheme will give him every chance to succeed. The time of possession offense is very friendly to the QB. With his athleticism he will run and scramble all over the bottom half the teams in the MVFC and look like Patrick Mahomes. Romfo at QB2 and a year more experienced. That’s the QB room unless they get hurt. This is a random preseason prediction.

Interesting attempt. It’s not an argument. You’re grasping for straws and coming up empty handed.

I agree but it was strange to go from Schuster as the QB with Romfo packages, and Vaughn packages. Last year Quincy got his few short yardage chances but Jerry didn’t see the field unless we were up by 85 points and he still had to down the ball for fear he might look good. Half the coaching staff lost their jobs over the implosion.

The offense will improve. The back 7 on D scares me. Probably need a lot of new names to be good enough.

Many reasons the coaching staff lost their jobs, including something that had little to do with the quarterback position: the defense was atrocious; no excuse for what the 2024 defense did against Youngstown State, Indiana State, and Illinois State. Fireable actions and glad change finally occurred albeit in a soft “golden parachute” fashion that only UND athletics could pull off …

I am just glad the change was made. However, it could have been made less painfully if Chaves hadn't given that hair-brained extension to Bubba last March.

Herein lies the problem; the overall culture of UND athletics remains a major concern despite the fact the (necessary) football coaching change happened. Hopefully the culture and philosophy of UND athletics will positively change soon, also …

Pretend, guess, predict, see with my own eyes, visit with players, visit with coaches, work with UND and NDSU, and  I also once scored 4 touchdowns in a high school football game…actually the most I scored was 2 but the Al Bundy quote fits.
