Cheap Gas at University Station

Goon

Recommended Posts

I case anyone is concerned about the price of gas. University Station next to the REA has gas that is 10 cents lower than the other stations in town. Check it out.

Current price today was 1.79 a gallon as opposed to the other stations in town.

I'd heard they were cheaper but it's hard to tell unless you pull up to the pumps. They need some serious signage to get the word out. I assume that's coming....it's a cool place though! Anyone here of more stuff coming up near the Ralph?

Woohoo... save a $1.00-$1.50 on one tank of gas.. Spread the word!!! This is too good to be true.

I think its worth it over the period of a year. Besides its good to see someone stand up to the gas cartell in Grand Forks. LOC the owner of Unversity Station is out of Fosston, Minnesota.

I'm not sure if people noticed or not, but about a month ago when gas prices in GF dropped by 10 cents, it was because University Station opened and they had gas at that price first. In the past, gas was always priced 5-10 cents per gallon lower than GF in places like Mentor and Fosston. That shouldn't be the case anymore, thankfully.

Until they (University Station) learn that they could have higher profits if they keep their prices the same as everyone else at 5-10 cents more.

That's $2.00-$2.50 if you have a decent-sized SUV. :D

Never understood why gas prices are so much higher in GF. I never leave Fargo if I'm headed up to GF without a full tank of gas.

$1.79 at most places in Fargo right now with some places cheaper, $1.71 about a week or two ago.

Here's a decent site to see what prices are like around the state- http://www.northdakotagasprices.com/

LaPier has been in business for a long time in Fosston, so I think he knows what he's doing. By the way, I just filled up today at University Station for $1.83/gallon. It looks like nearly everybody else in town is at $1.90.

Blame Simonson and the owner of the Holidays (can't remember the name).  Anytime a gas station lowers its price, they constantly call and harrass that station until they raise the price.

Did you work in a gas station, or are you Archie? No I didn't think so. The reason prices of gas is so high in this town is because three people own most of the gas stations. With the exception of Mark's (and Uni station) which tends to start gas wars for fun it seems like, we always pay more for gas. I think there is some type of collusion going on, sort of a Pepsi and Coke type of competition. If gas stations compete on other amenities other than price than they won't end up with egg on their faces. Free carwashes and other bells and whistles. If anyone wants more info go ask a pump attendant that doesn't work for Archie, they'll tell you that he is the price leader in town, sometimes people follow, sometimes they don't. But if you can make a profit on gas good luck, most fuel distributors are operating on thin margins and making their money on snacks and beverages. $1.29 for a Mt. Dew, now that is ridicules, fizzy sugar water! What ever happened to OK soda huh? Good night I'll be here all week.

I can't figure out if you're trying to argue against me or for me. You even say there is collusion going on, which is the same thing I was pointing out. My statement was just that some stations are almost forced to follow along.

I can't think of the name for the life of me. Luigi's maybe. Anyways, when that station opened by the old GFG in EGF, they set their prices way below every other station in town. In talking to the owners, they said that the other stations were harrassing them to raise their prices because it was good for everyone (meaning owners).

GF is as bad as OPEC in controlling prices. There is no such thing as competition. When I'm home, I only buy from the small time locally owned stores.

Just a few quick notes about the new gas station in town since I am currently employed by it...

1. Our gas price right now is $1.829, which is $.07 lower than anybody in the city. Also, if you pay with cash/check, we automatically take $.03/gallon off your bill for you.

2. If you've ever worked at a gas station before, you know that gas stations don't stay around b/c of their gas sales. Right now, we're making $.08/gallon profit on gas, which is the bare minimum you have to sell it for above cost. You make money on the sales inside your store, the candy, soda, food, etc. Thats where we make all of our money.

3. We figured out anyother gas station in town is able to match our prices for a week to 10 days and then they have to raise their prices b/c they can't stay at that level. We get our gas at a cheaper b/c the owners of University Station have their own fuel tankers so they don't have to pay a separate company to transport their fuel in. That's why our gas will be the lowest in town all the time.

4. We've been waiting for our sign to come for the past 6 weeks, but the first sign apparently cracked so they built a new one and that one should be put in by the end of this week or the early part of next week.

5. Lastly, I'm not saying this just because I work there, but if you haven't stopped in to try the deli food, you should. We've got breakfast croissants, biscuits, and pizzas, subs, salads, wraps, mexican, pizza, ice cream, deep-fried foods, hot dogs, pretty much everything. And I've tried most of the subs and they're all good. I haven't heard any complaints about our food, so I would recommend that you at least come and try something off of our menu. Prices are reasonable, the wraps are on sale right now.

well....Welcome to the North End!! Nice to see developement around the Ralph and I'm already a steady customer!! Any new business besides a PAYDAY LOAN joint up here is a plus. Get that signage up and you'll do fine and keep the fire on their backsides!! I'll pay a buck and half for a taco or three and a half bucks for a pack of smokes if it'll drive down gas prices in GF - for me, it's all about CONVENIENCE!!!

I was trying to say the same, I'm not sure if he was agreeing or not.

There is no competition in GF, but the gas prices aren't being gouged...I too wish they were lower (University station), but like I said earlier, I think they'll realize that they won't have a competitive advantage lowering there price (in the future) because others will match it.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think we are all on the same track here.

I believe there is big time collusion going on in this town and the owner of Simonson

Prices are higher in GF because of two things.

1. Like Lefty said, if a company can cut the mid distribution out they make an additional profit.

2. #2 is tied to #1. Fargo is the last main distribution point in the northern central states. Talk to the owner of the Stamarts/Green Mill and Stop-N-Go's in Fargo if you want to see a price change up in GF. They also own the major companies recieving bulk supply for distribution.

This is a very true statement. Luigi's was bullied by archie and dusterhoft into keeping their prices up with the simonsons and amoco's in town. That's why after the remodel, Luigi's had their prices up and offered 5 and 10 cent discounts once you came inside. I don't know if they still do that or not, but they were definately talked too by mr archie simonson.
