Grand Forks has to have some advantage in this considering the Canadian equivalent of the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) is in Winnipeg. Ah shucks on that, eh? :)

Of course some folks are bound and determined to save our vast emptiness forever.

It's easy to discount the economic impacts when you have your safe, tenured position already, eh professor? :)

Are they going to form a group called SIEVE!*

* Save Incredibly Enormous Vast Emptiness!

They better find a location that works. You can't make everyone happy, the financial impact of this lab would be huge!

Man that sounds like a big time opportunity for the city. Wonder how stiff the competition is to get it.

Pine Bluff Arsenal in Competition to be a New Federal Center

An Arkansas and Louisiana consortium is one of 29 other sites that have applied for the National Bio and Agro-defense Facility.

We (or a lot of us) hope it happens but the odds say it won't.

It's ironic that some of the fantastic examples of preserved land actually surrounds some rather hazardous installations, such as military bases or federal laboratories that restrict access.

Both sides should recognize that these seeming antagonistic views can be helpful, rather than harmful, if they broaden their mental horizon and be a little creative.

UND research park in making

The University of North Dakota will break ground Tuesday on the first building of a new Research Enterprise and Commercialization Park.

The $12 million Center of Excellence in Life Sciences and Advanced Technologies will create new student internships and high-paying jobs in Grand Forks, UND officials say.

He expects the 19.5-acre park will have up to four buildings in about five years.

While in the planning stages for the research park, Alfonso took stakeholders to a research park in Saskatoon, which he said is regarded as the most progressive park in North America.

More news on the Research Park which is scheduled to break ground today.

Tech park construction set to start

This facility is just the beginning of an increased push towards improving the uses of the research coming from the school according to Vice President for Research Peter Alfonso.

"It's about connecting our faculty with the private corporate world so that we can create new technologies and products that will benefit the state," he said.

COELSAT's building has already secured commitments from six partners and will be full after it opens. The REAC park will eventually be the site of four to five additional technology and research buildings, and construction will move to a different site which hasn't been selected yet after that.

UND: Foundation unveils Research Park project

ProLogic is one of six commercial partners that have committed to occupy space in the new research park. The others are Avianax, NovaDign, Agragen, Alion Inc. and Ideal Aerosmith. Petell said the research foundation will release more information in the coming weeks about technology the partner companies will be developing.

While this is all wonderful news, the primary objective of the U is to educate and I hope that is not getting lost. That being said I think that Peter Alfonso is doing a great job for UND.

UND Research Foundation names REAC park director

The UND Research Foundation today named the first director of its Research Enterprise and Commercialization Park.

Director Kevin Cooper will be responsible for marketing the research park to prospective tenants and connecting private businesses with intellectual property created by UND faculty and students.

Petell said all space in the Center of Excellence building has been taken, about 70 percent of it by six private companies and the remaining 30 percent by UND researchers. He said the park could hold as many as six buildings and construction on another building may begin within the next year or two.
