jimdahl
North Dakota Leads Race for North Central Conference Cup North Dakota used strong finishes in fall NCC Championships to lead the standings for the inaugural North Central Conference Cup following the fall season. The Fighting Sioux won the football championship, finished second in soccer, third in women
CoteauRinkRat
I hadn't even heard of this thing until now.
NDSU grad
We're right on your heels. So, are they still going to award the men's and women's races separately, or is this it?
CoteauRinkRat
I'm not sure.

jimdahl
Coming into the Spring run, here are the leaders: North Dakota State 147 South Dakota 140 North Dakota 139 Remaining sports: baseball/softball, tennis, outdoor track Reminder of scoring: Points are awarded on a 16 for 1st, 14 for second, etc. basis. The Sioux & Bison are neck in neck near the top in baseball; USD... less so.NDSU will get some good points off softball; UND and USD will finish last.UND will gain back that ground in winning women's tennis (NDSU fielded no entry, USD middle of the pack).None of UND/NDSU/USD fielded a men's tennis entry. The Sioux and Bison distanced themselves from USD, but didn't change much relative to each other up until that point. I'm not going to even pretend to know how to score track, but a glance through the records makes it look like NDSU would widen the gap over USD/UND. If interpret it all correctly (a big assumption), it looks like despite a strong Fall, the Sioux would have to fight for a distant second in the final standings. Congrats to the various Bison teams for leaving the NCC with a bang!
UND92,96
The UND women's programs have had a very solid year. Excluding hockey which, of course, did not play in an actual conference but did finish above .500 in its second year of existence, all but one of the women's teams teams thus far have finished in the top-4 in the NCC. Swimming and tennis won the NCC, soccer was second, basketball (which did win the conference tournament) and golf were third, and volleyball, cross country and indoor track were fourth. The one exception is softball which is clearly the one program which is in serious need of an upgrade. I'm not sure what the problem is there, but there's not much excuse for finishing last. In the men's programs, there's a pretty big gap between the programs which had a very good year, i.e. football, hockey, swimming and baseball, and the remainder of the programs which struggled, i.e. basketball, golf, cross country and track. With any luck whatsoever, basketball should be back near the top next year, and golf has been very good in the past. Track and cross country will likely always struggle until there's a decent indoor track. As much as I personally love track, unless it's contemplated that an indoor track will be built within the next 5-10 years, the men's track program may just as well be dropped. You simply cannot be successful in this climate without a decent indoor track.

star2city
If points were awarded for sports outside those offered by the NCC (which would be a fuller measure of an athletic department's performance), the results would be as follows: UND 214 Mankato 213 NDSU 203 SCSU 201 USD 192 SDSU 174 UNO 167 AC 130 If attendance was the criteria, UND would more than double the three second place contenders: UNO, SCSU, and SDSU. The Sicatoka
Not everyone has wrestling; not everyone has swimming; not everyone has hockey. Why not include mens and womens hockey (and because of logistics use the RPI/PWR ratings used to seed the NCAA hockey tournaments for standings)? The Sicatoka
Cute, BisonMav, very cute. There are "Ivy League hockey" standings and those Ivies that play hockey all play in the ECAC. PS - Think NDSU will win their all-sports conference cup next year?
BisonMav
PS - Think NDSU will win their all-sports conference cup next year? It depends on which conference they get in, and if the conference even has a similar points championship. It doesn't look like Football and wrestling will be in that same conference. Two more years until UND make the move?
The Sicatoka
Wouldn't it be smart to get all the details Joe and Gene didn't read in their report, but that others did, in place first?

UND92,96
UND won the NCC women's all-sports title for the third time in four years. It certainly doesn't hurt that UND sponsors each of the NCC-sanctioned sports whereas some schools do not, but it was a very good year nevertheless.
