Scotty Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 There is only one knock on Hakstol...and that is the lack of a national championship. That's it. Period. I think, for some, it's hard to see some of the team's Hakstol has fielded not win a title. I am not one of them. It's hard enough to even get to the Frozen Four, even with a stacked team. To win it is a whole 'nother challenge. The coach can only do so much. He can't change bad bounces and he can't go and play goalie if the team's goaltender flopped in the Frozen Four. He can't go score a game-winning goal, and can't deliver a momentum shifting check. This speaks for itself: 5 Frozen Fours in 7 seasons 2 MacNaughton Cups 3 Broadmoor Trophy's A team that gave you confidence to win it all come playoff time, every single season Has produced top-notch talent...who have been greatly successful both on and off the ice....he turns boys into men basically He doesn't take no for an answer He epitomizes the character and love of the Sioux tradition, and backs it up strongly. The team has seen growth in the fanbase and he has built excitement in a program where some thought it has reached its peak. The stands are always full, and look what has happened when the team plays in places like St Paul for the Final Five...it's jam-packed with Sioux fans. Some of this may seem unrelated to the head coach, but in reality, much if it is on his shoulders, whether it's good or bad. For us, we've seen some of the greatest times in Sioux hockey history...now it's time to win a national championship. I wouldn't trade Hakstol for anyone. Yes, some more things I was thinking as well. He obviously didn't create the tradition of excellence that surrounds Sioux hockey, but he has done an unbelievable job at continuing it and making it better. I've also come to realize how hard it is to win a national championship, especially in hockey given how fluky it can be. That is the primary reason I don't get worked up about the fact that he hasn't won one yet. Am I devastated every year that ends with a loss? Absolutely. But I know that one is coming and very soon! fargosioux Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I couldn't agree more. I'm not sure what happened to Lomackman back in college, but i have 2 young kids and we saw Hakstol at the ND State HS tournament. We were waiting in the entryway to go to our seats while the anthem was being sung, and when it was over Hakstol gave my kids "knuckles" and joked around with them. Sooooo.....yeah, I can see how Lomackman would call him a self-centered, arrogant snob! I don't know the guy personally, but every time I've had a chance to talk with him he's been more than accomodating - VERY nice guy - and a great coach. He went out of his way to interact with my 2 kids at the Fan Fest this year also. Quote
tho0505 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Was not at a keg party. He is just a self-centered nasty sob, but a good coach. He was arogant before he had earned the right to be one and I just do not like people like this. You're opinion of him was probably formed by watching press conference. Yes he is confident, thats why we get the nations top recruits. He expects excellence from players and professionalism. But if you did meet him when you attend UND 1 yr and he doesn't remember you, oh well, from the posts you've put on these boards I wouldn't be too fond of you either. On Thanksgiving two years ago I ran into him while bowling, he was pleasant and respectful. Coach Hak is a serious guy and confident, thats what you're going to get. Quote

Irish Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I'll admit to wanting Hak to win a championship before we call him a great coach. However, on a personal basis I think Hak is a great humble guy. My interactions with him on a personal level have left me feeling impressed. He is a genuinely nice guy who cares about other people and doesn't think he is better than anyone. One measure of character is how you behave when "no one else is looking". My experience with Hak is that he is a great guy whether or not people are watching. A class act. Quote
