82SiouxGuy
Actually as a part of ND history it would be appropriate to place it at the Heritage Center. You guys are not even going to have than nickname anymore.....doesn't that nickname end at midnight today? I guess if the UND folks want to cling to it, the NDSU fans probably don't really care anymore. Like I said earlier.....it has been left to the dust of history. The nickname ends next summer. The decision had to be made by midnight tonight.
WYOBISONMAN
why don't you go back to bisonville and talk smack about UND. I find it interesting how you try and act nice here, and do nothing but talk smack about the Sioux on bisonville. Oh....I am an asshole here too ....... Just ask Dave K...... WYOBISONMAN
Yup - display it proudly at the Heritage Center in Bismarck along with a complete list of the games and scores. Absolutely, it is a part of the history. The display should also show the history of the nicknames depicted on the trophy. How each logo has evolved etc. I think that is especially important with the loss of the Sioux nickname. The NCAA may have forced a change in the name, but it is a huge part of the athletic history of the entire state of North Dakota. 1
dlsiouxfan
In all honesty I see no reason why they need to retire the Nickel Trophy just because we're no longer the Fighting Sioux. The trophy is modeled after a Buffalo head nickel which only has a tangental relationship to the Fighting Sioux nickname.
Cratter
I would asume that the Nickel is permanently retired since the Sioux logo is no longer going to be used. I would imagine it should reside with the team that won it last and also won it more times than the other team. Therefore it's permanent home is with UND. I really don't think there is any debate over that, UND won the series and that's that. And the originator of the trophy, UND alumni. darell1976
And the originator of the trophy, UND alumni. Where is the Nickel is it on public display at UND?? I am sure my kids would love to see it. Also is the nickel with the Sitting Bull Trophy?

It was USD that originated that trophy.

My understanding is that the Nickel gets moved around from time to time and is usually not on campus. I recall hearing a story that at a time it floated around between Digger Anderson's apartment and the garage's of the assistant coaches. But on a serious note these trophies should be on display either at GF or in Bismarck. Plus they could have the Dakota Marker there too. We should appreciate all our sports history. Except for the fact that the Dakota Marker is an active trophy......the others are not active and are historical relics. With all this fighting over nick names, no one will ever play for either of those trophys again. But, it would seem to make sense to have them on display somewhere. If they stay out of sight for too long they are going to be completely forgotten andf wind up in someones basement bar. That would be unfortunate as many older alums from both schools have memories of battles for the Nickel. I also wonder if the Nickel and athletic nicknames would be too controversial of a topic for the State Historical Society to touch.....they may not want to jump into such a display. Regardless........both of those trophies are dead and will never be played for again.

My kids watched the UND/NDSU Football America video, and they asked me questions about how big the game was, and the Nickel Trophy. I think if it was on display they could see it. Its too bad only us older people (Not that I'm old 34) know what that game really meant, and the hype for that week.

By your logic those should be in Bismarck also?

siouxforeverbaby
Maybe its stuck in a Coke machine in the student union. Nope. Too many people know how to get into those! It is not kept on campus as far as I know. There is a group of like 5 people who know where the Nickel is and I don't think that all of them even know where it is at one time. It moves around. I've heard that the Nickel never stays in one place. It is in constant motion, 24/7/365. A team of people keep it protected from interlopers. Blizzards are the toughest days, but they usually get a Highway Patrol escort. Sometimes they disguise it like a big quarter. Anything they have to do to keep the Nickel safe. I know a UND guy who borrowed it from the NDSU campus once (back in the 50's)...kept it in the trunk of his car for months and then it magically appeared back at Moo U about a week before the game...good stuff...
