I think In-N-Out really missed their chance to be the big "fresh" national burger chain. Now that Five Guys has the national momentum, it's going to be tough, because In-N-Out isn't really differentiated. That said, travel to California or Nevada still always includes a mandatory stop at In-N-Out for me, which keeps it kind of special. Chains that you can only get in a certain region are kind of fun for travelers, though certainly not the way to maximize profit.

I really don't think In and Out was looking for national expansion, at least that's what I heard. But I will say that 5 guys do cook some good burgers. Fries are good, but a little too greasy for me. You get a lot of food for your money though. I prefer In and Out over 5 guys, but that's personal preference, 5 guys is still an excellent burger chain, imho.

In my opinion Five Guys is over priced average food. The burgers are roughly $5 a piece, and the smallest fry that you can buy feeds 2-3 people (plus they are way too greasy). All in all, it costs my wife and I $15-$20 to eat at the place and overall its just average.

What GFreally needs is a JL Beers like they have in downtown Fargo. Great place to go for a Burger and a Beer, and the prices are great.

They always claimed that, but once Five Guys spread outside the East Coast, In-N-Out opened a new office in Texas to study expansion. I think they're going to start in 2011.

I think the burgers are really carried by the "choose your own toppings" (they insist on overcooking the meat itself) , but the fries were the real inspiration for the place. The guys who started it in Arlington based the idea off the thick cut, peanut oil-fried fries with malt vinegar that are popular on boardwalks up the East Coast (I think they were specifically inspired by Thrashers out of Ocean City). The regional popularity of the fries (born out by the neutral to negative comments about them in this thread) always made me assume the idea wouldn't scale outside the East Coast, but I guess they knew better.

No one does a burger like around here. Flame grilled burgers on a lightly toasted buttered hard roll. None of this crappy bun action with a burger cooked on a griddle with a slab of American cheese thrown on.
