Aside from the first two rows, there was no spirit at the football game in the student section. It was pretty clear the rest of the students were there to get their priority hockey tickets.

I've got some friends who are worried that Santiago might transfer. I told him thats a stupid thing to worry about, that it doesn't really happen that often in football, and isn't a common practice IMO (not an opinion matter, but I don't have many examples). I said people like Zenner, Bauman from NAU, Kupp, Prukop, etc. hadn't transferred ever and that was my example of why it doesn't happen often. Can anyone confirm that it is not a common practice to transfer to FBS after good FCS seasons? I'm pretty sure the year-long transfer rule in play there.

But remember, these !@#!$ student fans deserve at least as much say as you all do on the nickname issue. #CognitiveDissonance

Have to go with the Good guys -- optimism or not, I feel good. UND 28 UNC 17

Its a matter of time until BV gets ahold of this and then goes EVERYONEs credibility. My argument, from a different perspective is this -- when a student becomes an alum, they can choose a few different routes: 1. move on and away, no longer associate with the university 2. choose to attend games, be a fan from near or far, and have season tickets 3. become a donor and season ticket holder and various combinations of the three. I feel that those who have already demonstrated their commitment should get more say than a student, because we cannot tell how many students will end up being associated with the school in the future. Their level of commitment, by nature, is unknown.

Stakeholder paying to pick is preferable to paying a consultant to pick, not ideal, but preferable

I would think the elitists at the top of the Champions Club would have managed the process differently than how it has been handled, but we'll never know. I understand the future donations from current students, again, never said they shouldn't get a vote - they just haven't demonstrated their support yet. Like a bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
-
In the same way that Vikings fans aren't extinct - in the same way that there are still UND football fans after the Muss era. Their opinions should've counted for more, in my mind.

You refuse to read what I've written. It's not the age that matters, its the number of $$ committed to the university, it is the number of tickets bought, sweatshirts worn. It is the support in those years that matters.
-
absolutely not. I think you are failing to read the part where age only matters on the basis of donations, losing seasons sat through, things of that nature. If a 60 year old fan became a fan yesterday, then no, his opinion is no better than a students. If you'll take a look, you will see my original post stating that current student/faculty votes should count as 1 vote. If you can't see the logic in what I've said, The University of North Dakota has failed you as an education provider, and is getting what it deserves. Whose marriage advice would you hold in higher esteem?
-
I think its fair to say the number of students that have bled green from the time they were born is a far minor to the number of students who moved in from out of state and have only recently adopted kelly green. I choose to read "<1%" as an exaggeration

Exceptions to every rule -- accounting for that <1% of the population is what led to the removal of the Sioux name. Use that reasoning if you'd like. I like some students too. We all were snot-nosed 20 year olds, just like we were all 4 year old kids needing discipline, 8th grade kids being sent to the principles office, and new grads at our first jobs -- doesn't mean they possess the same perspective, or hold the school in the same esteem as one who has been associated with the school for longer. Does your parents marriage of 50 years represent greater value than your marriage of 1 year? In a similar way, the association with the university is more valued the longer it goes back, at least in my mind.
-
I am not saying the students should get fewer votes because they disagree with me -- I'm saying a 60 year old donor and alumn who has season tickets (has been donating for probably 30-35 years) should get more - much more - say than a snot-nosed 20 year old kid who didn't know what the University of North Dakota was two years prior. Does that seem unreasonable?
-
You're like the Sioux forever crowd, except you're digging in your heels about 10 years too late, and what you're fighting for has no relation to the university.
-
voting should have been doled out something like this 1 vote per hat you wear (Oxbow and Sic would get three votes) Donors votes weighted at 2x Season ticket holders weighted at 1.75x Alum weighted at 1.5x Students/faculty weighted at 1x Reason being that a lot of the students aren't even familiar with the history of the university. How many students association with this place start the day they walk on campus? Too many to be making lifelong decisions for the University. An alarming number of students I've spoken with completely disagree with this logic (which describes fascination w/blackhawk logo and HowAboutWeKeepSioux). But it doesn't matter. Go Green.

Redshirt freshman linebacker, from Canada I believe

you are a sideshow. Siouxphan, first logical defense of Hawks that I have seen, thank you. I can see your points, but I'll still be voting riders.
-
Roughriders less ND-related than Hawks? Lady Riders doesn't work for the womens teams?
-
OK. @ Siouxphan27 and snooty89, Why would you choose Hawks, something common, over Roughriders, something unique? I think roughrider fans struggle to express their incredulity with this question, and it comes across insulting and condescending.
-
To you I would ask: A) How big the student body is and how many Hawks voters were there? Correlation. B) How many North Dakota/Sioux Forever/'I refuse to take part in this joke of a process' people are there? Compare that number to number of non-voters? Correlation.
-
As has been demonstrated, the University can have success without a nickname at all - clearly it will keep having success no matter the nickname. My childish comment was directed at the fact that there simply is nothing unique about it. Just be be ready to accept that when one hears talk of the 'Hawks' in an airport, it most likely will not be in reference to North Dakota. Sioux did that, and Roughriders would do that. Hawks is so overdone in hockey and football circles that RPI is known as "the engineers" in those sports, and red Hawks in other sports.
-
YES. You should decide which you dislike the least and vote for it -- the same as you do every time there is a presidential election. Roughriders (I am told) is used by zero other universities. Yes, Red River uses it. If they were a national power in something year in and year out (at the HS level), where we would have an identity crisis, i would have second thoughts, but they're not, and i don't.
-
Honestly my line next week will be less than 1/3 of eligible voters chose Fighting Hawks. 1/6th (considered a majority) chose this for us. So by all means, go on and vote so that I can at least start accepting that we are a childish enough fan base to elect Hawks by majority, as opposed to an indifferent fan base.

To those who choose to abstain - A wise woman once told me: "Its fine to have principles, but sometimes, at the end of the day, that's all you're left with." Like it or not, people will move past Sioux (I sure don't like it). Eventually, you will be at a UND (roughriders, hawks) hockey game, and you will let out a "Sioux yeah yeah!" and you will get glares in response. On that day, you will wish you had voted. Or you will dig in your heels and become a a bitter old man or woman. To you who wouldn't vote, I implore you to not be short-sighted. I will still be wearing my Sioux gear probably until the end of time. One day, I'm sure I'll buy gear with the new nickname. Make your opinion count today, in a way that you haven't yet (and look where that has gotten us!). This is the last chance for you to legitimize your opinion. On November 16th, it really won't matter why you didn't vote, all you will be is a statistic that chose not to step up to the plate, and therefore comes across as disinterested in the University's athletics.
