It seems to me that given the variance of actual values, using a conference's unweighted position on the Sagarin list doesn't seem to be a fair way to pick playoff teams. If you continue to follow that as a guide, who would you remove from the playoffs and who would you add?

How do you know I'm not a UND fan? Have I ever written anything here or on BV that put down UND, its teams or fans? To be clear, someone else brought up the BV thread and message count. I used a calculator.

How different do you think the schools are really ranked given UND is tied for #168 with 4 other schools, then there is a group of 8 tied at #173, and then NDSU tied for #181 with 6 other schools? It looks like a golf tournament result to me. Since both universities are included in the National University list, my guess is US News doesn't agree with your "agriculture-specialty intuition" tag.

It what way was my comment biased toward NDSU? I previously stated that I think both offer a good education at an affordable price and I agree that by the commonly accepted definition, UND is the flagship university for ND. My problem with the "flagship" term is that by definition every state has one and in the ND case, the "fleet" isn't ranked too impressively. I'm not going to compare the programs offered by the two schools but I do know that NDSU offers at least a few programs that UND doesn't and some of them aren't Ag or Home Ec related . My guess is at most state universities you can cherry-pick some programs to create a unique set.

Please drop this "Flagship" crap. It should embarrass us all that neither school makes the top 400 in Forbes rankings or the top 150 in US News rankings. This wouldn't be the case if either school or the state took "areas that really matter" seriously.

I'll never understand this bragging about the educational quality of either school. Both provide a good education at a reasonable cost but neither light up a resume. I think the reason NDSU doesn't want to schedule UND is very simple: to do so chips away at the illusion that the two schools play at different levels. NDSU currently gets most of media attention and recruits. If NDSU travels to UND, win or lose, the illusion is reduced. Traveling to EWU or Weber doesn't have that effect because most people in the area aren't familiar with those schools and both are outside of the shared recruiting area. Personally, I would like to see the game resumed, but in the current environment there doesn't seem to be a lot of upside for NDSU.
