We are not the team we were the last few years that's for sure. Makes me wish we had kept some players under the COVID rules but I get why we didn't.

That being said, I'm not too worried about missing the tournament just yet. We are still #11 in the Pairwise and Cornell is #14 now so this hurts but it won't tank us. We should still make the tournament but we definitely need to improve our defense and goaltending if we want actually do anything beyond making the tournament.

Our effort and compete levels need an overhaul in order to right the ship imo.  This is a shell of the team that swept Denver.  We played so hard and fast we broke Denver's will.  I want that team UND hockey team back.  It's in there somewhere I hope it comes back out.

I got smacked the other day, but I once again didn't watch.  I didn't miss a game for about 13 years...this year, I've watched maybe 5....that's where the rubber hits the road.  Its not about being a cheerleader, its about calling what you see, and this team isn't a fun product on the ice.  Sure Sanderson is dynamic, and Gaber has some talent...but...

As I told my friends the other day.  I guess this is Fighting Hawks hockey, because it sure isn't Sioux hockey.

Flame away haters, but so be it.

I can remember when I was a kid and Scott Swigman (excuse spelling maybe) did color as Tim Hennessy called the games and I just loved to listen to the games and it has been the same forever for me but I agree that something is missing with this team.  Maybe it is the manner in which they lose games. There was almost zero effort against NTDP for an example.  I have always thought of the Sioux as a bring your lunch bucket, hard working right to the end team.  Other teams might have beat the Sioux but nobody ever outworked or out hustled us.  I don't get that feel with this team.  The Senden line yes plays Sioux hockey I feel but they cannot carry the team.

You guys pissed the guys were college kids last night?

No not upset about them out having fun, but I hope come Monday they realize there is a time for fun and there is a time for hard work.  I think the thing i saw that upset me most at least Saturday (worked and didn't see Friday game) was the lack of our D picking up the forwards out front of our net and letting them jump on rebounds they should have boxed out on.  Very sloppy D coverage in front of our net.

We stink right now. Hate to say it but it’s true. I’ve defended this team but they have to put a better product on the ice.

If we keep going like this we will drop out of the top 16 for pair wise and have to win the league tourney to get into the national tournament

Berry has had three excellent teams since he took over as HC.

One was the national champ year.
One was easily the best team in the nation before the entire postseason was wiped out by COVID.
One was easily the best team in the nation before the postseason was "influenced by COVID" (opponents getting byes due to cancelled games) and lost in a multiple OT heartbreaker to a rival.

This year we knew would be a difficult year after all the players came back for last years title run and then left or signed pro contracts.
Berry has built (or helped build) those three amazing teams...he can do it again, but it needs to start now with nailing down some more high-caliber recruits.

I agree that this was maybe the best U18 Team I have seen, but when the #5 ranked college team gets shut out at home vs. high school kids, you can't just say the other team played well - that is only half the story.  This UND team now as a solid reputation for not showing up to a bunch of games.  How can they be called a team of "leaders" and be expected to do anything this season if they can't get focused on a regular basis?

I get tired of always hearing that we always get the other teams best game.  The entire team minus Hellsten is now on the milk carton.  Hope they are found soon or it's gonna be a long second half.

That was just plain slow & sloppy.  So, now this team has two "honors":

    1) First team to lose a "Destination Game"

    2) First UND team to lose to the 17 year-olds (and got shut out, too).

Not exactly the kind of things for which you want to be remembered.

We didn't play very well but those young whipper snappers were pretty good.

The play by play announcer (Gord Miller, I believe) even has a Frank Mazzacco style voice.  I like listening to them because, yes, they are homers, but they also are incredibly critical of the players.  They expect absolute perfection out of the Canadian team.

Yes I agree about expecting perfection.  They though sometimes put the cart before the horse as far as presuming that Canada will win Group A.  The Fins are tough and there is no drop off from 1st line to 4th line.  The Fins I believe are gonna give the Canadians a run for their money and I would say that they (Fins) may be the most complete team in the tourney and they have really good chemistry and play as a team.  Finland could very well win this tourney.   If the Canadians get into penalty trouble against the Fins they have shown against the U.S. that they can find find the back of the net on the power play also.  Group A imo is up for grabs between the Fins and Canadians.

  9. Listening to the Canadian announcers call the Canada Czech game the announcers are already annointing the Canadians as the gold medal winners.  Reminds me of the FSN announcers start talking natty after the Gophers beat up on the Sisters of the Poor a couple weekends in a row.

So we’re already declaring that Sanderson is getting wrongly snubbed this year? IMO, he doesn’t even deserve the Hobey yet based on traditional criteria - top 5-10 likely, and hopefully he puts together a Hobey worthy second half - but maybe we should wait for him to earn it and then see how the vote goes before we play the victim/bias card.

It got me curious though, and I hate to challenge the persistent “east coast bias” narrative but a quick count shows 15 of the last 20 hobey baker winners come from “western” schools/conferences.

Sanderson is a great player and may put together a Hobey worthy year, but if he doesn’t win, there are a lot of non-conspiracy reasons for it. Let’s see how it plays out first…

East Coast bias is particularly harsh when it comes to UND i.e. Matt Frattin.

For Hobey?  I would think putting up numbers better than Cale Makar at this point is unavoidable to notice.  Yes, Makar was in the East, but all the coaches talk about how Sanderson shouldn't even be at this level, so I would guess the word is out everywhere.  Whether they would still be provincial is another question, but make no mistake everyone that knows about hockey knows Sanderson is legit.

Cale Makar having played at UMASS was a big plus for him getting the eastern bias votes. Sanderson will not get the eastern bias votes and will get snubbed for the Hobey.

I know that, you know that, a hell of alot of hockey people know that.

But the east coast dandies that beleive the world ends at the Mississippi river make the difference in these things you know that.

The bucci led urge to shakeweight the Michigan kids profiles all over him make a big difference.... its the hip new Boston, don't ya know.

East Coast bias or should I say east coast elitism.

USA plays Slovakia at 8:30 Central Dec 26.

Only had 1 prelim game, lost 4-3 to Finland, but led 3-1 late and had a 5 minute major called, where the Fins scored 2 and tied it. Then they scored PPG in OT for the USA loss.

(The 5 wasn't Sanderson nor Klevin).

But still: stay outta the box!

    Go USA!

Here is a pretty good preview of Group B.  Russian goaltender could be a factor in our group if he is on his game. https://www.nhl.com/news/group-b-preview-for-2022-world-junior-championship/c-329153074

The selfish side of me hopes that Sanderson would choose not to go to the Olympics since it’s obvious that this is his last season at UND. But if given the opportunity to go and he accepts, I wouldn’t blame him. It’s an honor to be able to represent your country.

Any chance Kleven gets tapped for the Olympic team?  I'd take him over most defensemen behind Sanderson.  He also brings a very physical side if he can stay out of the box.

Louie reminds me of Conner Gaarder, plays his part well and has been refining his game a good pace. Senden plays with emotion and now has a lot of confidence to go with that. Hain, for me the jury is still out. Hain has been fortunate playing with Senden.

I thought Portz played well in place of Senden.  This line is starting to become an offensive force lately as far as on the rush and not just creating chances on the forecheck.  Jammers goal Saturday was borderline sick with 5 CC players surrounding him.  Hain ripped a laser off the post from top of circle late in the game that cleanly beat Vernon also.  I really think if we could groom some younger guys like a Ness, Albrecht and maybe Kunz as a 2nd shutdown line it would let Berry match up the Senden line against the other teams 3 or 4 line as I think they could reak havoc.  Just a thought.  Couldn't do that against top teams like Denver with Savoie line etc.
