  1. Schmaltz does not make first cut at USA WJC Dev Camp

    http://usahockey.cac...CRoster.doc.pdf

Crazy....I thought he was a lock. I have heard his game has been slipping a little (compared to most blue chips). Although he played pretty well in the USHL playoffs this year. I'm shocked he didn't even get by the first cut....he was a first rounder. This is odd. Brady Skeji made it over him and well as two other kids drafted in the 3rd and 4th rounds. I really wonder what happened.

  2. https://twitter.com/...886983093669888

#FlaPanthers prospect and North Dakota F Rocco Grimaldi no longer listed on the U.S. WJC camp roster. He underwent knee surgery last season.

He is still recovering from his surgery last season. He is probably just recovering slowly. He missed the Panthers summer camp too. He has been skating but no contact (I believe). Lets cross our fingers that he'll be ok by October. I wouldn't start worrying too much just yet.

  3. What always bugged me about Sweeney was that he got so excited when something good happend for UND, he got this high pitched whiney voice that you could barely make out what he was saying. I am all for showing enthusiasm, but it is was just annoying to watch a hockey game when every time the puck got near the net he freaked out and sounded all high and whiney. Not knocking the guy personally, just not a fan of his broadcast syle.

Yeah...and we are in a big time D1 football conference too :)

  4. That's fine and dandy if you are MSU Moorhead or Mankato. But this is UND. We are D1 and in a big time D1 conference in the Big Sky. We are on the brink of starting in a new hockey conference that is looking to become the top conferences in college hockey. Also, with Midco UND is tupgrading its televison broadcasts with shows and HD in the future. UND athletics is now in the big time now. An upgrade in the broadcast of games was needed and IMO satisfied with hiring Hammer.

    Hahahaha....that was awesome

  5. I will disagree with you that in fact it did have to do with atheletics and gaining an advantage on the playing field. Why did they keep all of this a secret. Paterno knew about this. The fact that he didn't report this is awful. If all of this would have come out 10 years ago, they would have most likely fired Paterno back then. You don't think that Penn State has a recruiting advantage in Joe Paterno? He is their number one football recruiting tool. Not having him as head coach would have dramatically hurt recruiting of top players. So because they covered up all these allegations, they knew their were going to be reprocutions if this ever came out. So by keeping it a secret and having Joe Paterno continue to remain the head coach, they absulutely gained an advantage in recruiting which translates to the playing field. So vacating all wins during this time persiod was ,IMO, absulutely appropriate.

    True. Right on.

  6. Haha, that's great. Obviously many don't agree so we'll have to wait and see. Again, I never said he was a absolute terrible (college) hockey player....I just said he was an overrated NHL prospect. Again, we'll have to wait until he finally get's the call.....hopefully we don't have to wait as long as it's taking Jordan Schroeder...I had the same arguement with Gophs fans and they're still waiting for him to get called up.

  7. The NCAA has a bit of a mess on its hands. I understand that they might not have jurisdiction in this case. But, they have shown a willingness to get involved in some very gray areas ie (flags and nicknames). Now, if they sit back and don't get involved with a child predator who was protected by a school, athletic dept and specifically the football program. It will look like it is protecting one of the premier schools/conference in the country. In my opinion - If SMU got the hammer at 5 years. I think a 10 year hammer for the athletics department and AAU status pulled for the school. This will send a very clear message about the priorities for a University. Again, a school president, AD and football coach all knew about this and they let it continue for over a decade. It was a running joke throughout campus about "Jerry’s Kids" - it was an accepted cultural behavior.

    Agreed, good points.

  8. Not sure why you think that. He produced big time in high school, went straight to the USHL and led in playoff scoring, then had over 40 pts as a frosh. Why is he overrated?

I just think he is, as far as an NHL prospect goes. He seems to get himself in very opportunistic positions but that is it. He is terrible in his own zone, is not overly quick, and plays with about the same physicality as basketball player. Not to mention he doesn't have a quick or hard shot. I read some people comparing him to Duncan.....this is fair, however, there is one difference...Duncan had an extremely quick shot. He could get it off quickly. They both had the pleasure of playing with great college players. Back to Rau, he played with arguably the top three college player in the league and Budish....who is greatly underrated. Bjugstad is 6'6'' 220 (and very gifted) and Budish is either 6'1'' or 6'2'' and like 230 (and very gifted). Just saying, not many people agree with me but let's see what he ends up doing. I have seen Rau up close though, he looks pretty immature physically to me so he may grow more and pack on more lbs, that would help him tremendously and I would take back everything I just wrote. Right now he looks 16 years old.

  9. I was trying to throw Bjugstad a bone- he did score 25 goals last year and has a knack for the net down low.

There is no real comparison between an NHL all-star, conn smythe winning, arguably best two-way center in the NHL and a college kid with potential.

What always stood out to me on JT in college, was not his hands per se, but rather his perfect positional play and excellent all around skill. Not saying he couldn't shoot (ask Frazee at the WJC) or wasn't a great passer...he had all of the tools.

What stands out to me on Bjugstad is that he has great hands and a big body. Maybe its because it is unexpected or because Toewser did everything so well that it makes Bjugstad's hands stand out to me.

Bjugstad will be a very good NHL player, I believe. But I he'll never be what Toews is....as far as all around player...face of the league, etc. Bjugstad probably has a few 30 goal seasons in him with that heavy shot and size.

  10. I think the team's will be very even, if you compare the top few lines for each team I think the Sioux come out ahead.

Grimaldi-Knight-Kristo vs. Rau-Bjugstad-Budish, I would say Bjugstad is the best of those 6 with the 3 Sioux player's followed closely after.

MacMillan-Rowney-Parks vs. Warning-Haula-Condon Haula is without a doubt the best player here but I see big jumps from MacMillan and Parks and Rowney should hit around 40 points this year. I would take UND's second line as well.

Schmaltz-Forbort vs. Schmidt-Alt, give the nod to the Gophers, but Forbort is the best of these 4

Mattson-MacWilliam vs. Marshall-Helgeson, I would take Mattson over Marshall and MacWilliam over Helgeson

Gleason-Simpson vs. Skjei-Holl, Holl has underachieved so far, but Skjei has enormous potential at D.

All in all I think the Sioux have more depth at forward while the Gopher's have more at D, it should be a very fun year with both teams being very good. I just hope they can avoid each other in the NCAA tournament until the Frozen Four, because I expect both will be good enough to be there.

I agree much of what you said, but I was thinking all 4 lines. MN's entire team is coming back (pretty much) their 3rd and 4th lines will remain very much intact. You are correct though regardin the top 6 forwards and top 4 D. Although, don't sleep on Budish....that guy will play in the NHL. Rau is super overrated.

  11. agree with the adjectives that you've used to describe his skating, but being a better than average skater in the NHL to me is an "excellent" skater.

Gaborik still probably has the best acceleration in the league right now...

I think they broke the mold when they built Paul Coffee...

I'm guessing he's comparing NHL skating to NHL skating.

  12. The goofs are overatted every year, I like it when they are ranked high, the out come is always the same! Now someone above says their defense was the best in the nation last season, and their all coming back! All season last year we heard patty was the best, gets awards and what have you... But now it doesn't matter the goalie with that D-cor? ????? Same old song and dance! I have never felt this confident about our Sioux team to be! My opinion, bring on the rodents, the other rodents also, the Sioux could play goofs one weekend and badguys the next all season and I wouldn't worry about it! Go Sioux!!!

I like the confidence but lets get real.

  13. The first sentence was sarcasm. I actually thought he would be back. And I don't really care either way. I like our team. I'll take our chances.

Yeah well we have too. They should be two good games. As far as on paper goes, without Bjugstad I actually would have liked out team better....with him they probably have a stronger team going into the season. Anything can happen though during the payoffs. Also, I think Grimaldi is going to have a very big year. The only thing I am worried about is our top end D. We have a ton of offensive dmen but not many that can shut down the opposition. Forbert should be able to this year (hopefully) but that's about it, regardin dmen that will be on the ice a ton. When I say opposition I mean the Goofs and the Badgers. The top three teams will be UND, MN and WIS (in any particular order).

  14. Bjugstad returning is a good thing for college hockey even if he plays for the rodents.

Should be an interesting final year of the WCHA. I can see UND and MN duking it out to finish first. The only two games they play each other should interesting to see how they match up against each other.

    Agreed.

  15. Good for them. Doesn't change goaltending issue though.

Read that he's coming back....that is not good news actually. A healthy Bjugstad is almost unstoppable in college hockey. I also don't think they will have too big of a goaltending issue. They got a couple of solid goaltenders. Sorry, just being honest. We should see some pretty intense games this season.

  16. They can wear either a half shield or a full cage in the USHL.

Do we know any more where they're at with this possible change? What's the chances it goes through this year?

Yup. I was speaking on the NHL rule. I think the USHL says all players under 18 have to wear masks....I could be wrong though. That's how it was when I was younger. I don't think it will go through this year.

  17. I think it's a little different. North Dakota fans don't really care where the good hockey players come from. Meanwhile, a large percentage of Gopher fans consistently make comments about UND having "overaged Canadians". I think his point is that not every person associated with the Gophers hockey program or supporting Gophers hockey is Minnesotan, so perhaps they might want to tone it down a bit. It's all rather hypocritical anyways since a majority of their best basketball and football players come from out of state, and most of the Gopher hockey fans are also Gopher football and basketball fans. I don't hear them griping about that. If a Gophers football team consisting of mostly out of state players happened to beat out a Buckeyes team consisting of mostly Ohio high school football players for the Rose Bowl some year, I doubt too many of those same fans would complain too much.

Yes, Gopher fans do say that....a lot! But that Mariucci guy didn't saying anything like that....that's all I was trying to say. You are correct, I could care less where the kids come from as long as they are good. I did here an interesting stat though, if you go by a city level there are more Grand Forks kids that have played for the Sioux (in the last 15 years) than any other one city. I thought that was pretty cool.

  18. I read that too, but I just don't see how they could do that. I'm all for half shields, but if a kid wanted to wear a full facemask how could you tell him that he couldn't?

The reason for not allowing facemasks (for non-injured players) is that the facemask could injure players wearing half shields. I don't know if it's right or wrong but that is the reason.

  19. It never ceases to amaze me how gopher fans wanted Parise so bad and have such an affection for Lou Nanne, and still profess an unbelievable hatred for Canadians. Guess what, Nanne and J.P. Parise were Canadians! Maybe somebody should tell Wally Shaver that as well.

Slightly out of left field....pretty sure he was talking about Zach....not Lou or JP. Sorry to stick up for the Goofs but I have heard many Sioux fans complain when Potulny and Irmen went to the Goofs (I was one of them :)).

  20. I am going to leave him off my list because he decided to bolt his team mid stream.

From what I heard Coyle had terrible grades and couldn't hack it in the classroom. Supposedly he would have been academically ineligible had he stayed. Probably a good thing he left....some kids simply aren't made for college. It still hurt BU a ton though.

  21. Did anyone read what Justin Bourne wrote on this topic? It was pretty well written and talked about a lot of the most contentious points in the argument. I enjoyed the read, especially coming from a former WCHA player who had the option of playing in either leagues. I'll edit this post shortly with the link to the post.

Additionally, the Bourne post brings up a payment issue and the fatal flaw with the NCAA's amateur status -- the CHL can corrupt is by having a player participate in a couple games at a young age. It's a damn sin.

    EDIT: The link -- http://blogs.thescor...paying-players/

Nice article, I like to hear from former players.
