  1. I had a few takeaways from the game: 1. They need to shore up their defensive game; those goals were not entirely the goalies fault 2. They must find someone else to fill the void left by Nelson on that top line.....Drake looked lost on that line; I'm going to say it again...put Rocco at wing on that top line, I know some like to say he is a natural center but if and when he makes the NHL he will have to learn how to play wing anyways 3. Back to Rocco, I thought he looked fast and everything that was advertised, however, he was a one man show, his line mates were definitely not up to his speed. All in all the guys looked a little rusty as far as their defensive game goes....but I had a blast watching. Should be a fun year.

  2. You don't think Simpson will be with Mattson on the top unit? Or do you expect a forward to play the other point, Kristo? Possibly Grimaldi?

Because I am slightly conventional I like 2 dmen on the point for a PP. But I have heard that Kristo may play the point while Rocco, Rowney and Knight play up front (with Mattson also playing the point). I really think Simpson will be good this year so it won't surprise me if they switch it up...or start the year with both of those guys playing the point. Hak does a pretty good job at seeing who gels so I'll leave it at that. But I hear this from someone who is close to the team.

  3. I heard Macmillan will play on that top line to start the season. For some odd reason Rowney will center the third line, however, will play on the top PP unit. Mattson will be the QB on the top unit, while Schmaltz will be QBing the second PP unit. I'm not sure where Simpson fits in just yet, regardin his PP time, however it must be with Schmaltz on that second unit. I'm expecting a breakout year from Simpson this year.

  4. Agreed. On paper, they look like the two strongest teams. I feel that we have a ton more depth than last year...if we can stay healthy, we have as good a shot as anyone else at unseating those two teams.

I want a full season of seeing what Rocco can do. That should be exciting after seeing glimpses during his four games last year.

Can you imagine this team with Nelson still on it? Wonder if he feels any regrets about signing now with the lockout...

Maybe a little but I doubt it. He has a great offseason and he has looked great for the Islanders this summer. Depending on how long the lockout is to last, I see him having a great AHL year. He had already figured out the college game and lets get one thing straight....he didn't go to UND for the education. He went there to get to the NHL. However, I too was worried with his terrible numbers at the tail end of the AHL season last year.

Honestly, I think UND has a stronger team on paper (than BC). I am not going to take anything away from the Goofs because, on paper, they're stacked. But BC lost significant production from last year in Kreider and Doumlamin (sp?).

  6. To me politics has nothing to do with this gift. I am an Obama supporter, but I am happy for this gift to UND. I could care less about the politics of anyone donating to a university. Heck, I'm happy for Dick Cheney's financial support of my grad school at U of Wyoming.

    That's too bad.

  7. Weren't we just talking about the partying within the hockey team in another thread? Well they party regularly, however, this must have been "above and beyond" for the suspensions to be handed down. From what I heard they had a pretty huge party in which the police were called. As there were under-agers (on the team), the police let them off the hook but called the school. This is pretty normal however, I'm torn that they all have to sit out (the same game). This is nothing different than any other year, however, with the NDSU and PSU issues, UND is being proactive to the culture change within college athletics.

Is that Manitoba game going to be televised (in the Cities)?

  9. Relax people! They received minors, which happens to a large number of college age adults each year. They didn't hurt anyone, completely make fools of themselves, or put the program in a negative light whatsoever! Hak will deal with it internally and let the rest of the players know what is expected from here on out. Let's move on and get ready for a fun RUN AT A NATTY!

Agreed. They got caught, believe me all underage Sioux players drink (well except Rocco, I honestly believe he doesn't).

  10. my thought on splitting Parks and MacMillan was due to someone's comment on Hak describing the chemistry between MacMillan and O'Donnell- who knows- as I said the other day, it is just fun prognosticating...

It will be heavy competition to skate on that fourth line...

If Gleason is playing "up" that takes away a spot too.

I think the elder MacMillan, Sanderson, Pattyn, St. Clair and Gaarder will be battling.

I think Rodwell will skate most nights.

They played together for a shot while last year as well. However, they had chemistry in Junior A, which is a lot different than college. I still like the chemistry of Rowney, Parks and Macmillan over what he had in juniors. Just saying.

  11. Isn't Dillon Simpson like 19 years old? I know he was like 17 when he came to UND and still could have actually been a Senior in High School... He is relatively young for a college hockey player.

Half the NHL is 19, that excuse is rapidly dwindling as more and more guys are graduating early to play college. I think Bjugstad did too. However, I think Dillon has 30+ point this year. I do agree with some of you, that I too had high expectation for him. Either way I see him having a great year this year.

  12. Gropp was taken 6th overall in the WHL Bantam draft by Seattle, but his dad played college hockey at CC, so who knows. He does list Johnny Toews as his hockey hero, so hopefully he wants to follow in his footsteps. I also see that James Patrick's nephew Nolan Patrick is quite a player and is projected to go high in the next Bantam Draft. His dream had been to be a Fighting Sioux, so hopefully he is still interested in that route.

I've see Patrick play...he is really talented.

  13. Was he a sophomore last year? Edina's program is stacked and ice is hard to come by as a soph. They also play a top schedule. Still, those are paltry numbers...he might be a late bloomer...

Sure...I watched many Edina games this year. They do have a lot of young kids, but needless to say I never noticed this kid once and UND doesn't need to go after some kid who may turn out to be almost average. They need to put their work into Conner Hurley.

  14. Hak was coaching during the Judy's incident wasn't he?

Which incident was that again? Actually now that I'm thinking about it...more Sioux players, in the last 5-7 years, have gotten into trouble than I can remember any other group getting into.

  15. To be honest, maybe under Gino this *could* have happened.

Under Hakstol, nope. That dude is a major harda$$. I have a friend whose son plays junior hockey and knows some Sioux players. It's study/practice/a tiny bit of free time,/sleep/study/practice...repeat...then some games in-between. UND has a reputation under Hakstol for being the school to get good grades AND develop hockey skills. Hakstol demands 100% effort on and off the ice.

My friend's son can hack the academic end, but isn't' there with the hockey skills for the UND program.

Haha, my cousin played under Hak and I can guarantee they partied pretty hard. Not out and about but they are pretty hardcore....just smart about it. And yes, most of them act like typical rock stars....especially the Canadian ones. But oh well...as long as their good. I would definitely leave out the sexual assault though.

Also, I was at the Down Under a few years back (I believe that's what it's called) and Oshie was having amateur strip night there on some tables. All out of fun though. They are young...and will party hard like a lot of us do/did.

  16. Reading through the updated bios of the current UND mens hockey roster I noticed that Colton St. Clair graduated from Fargo South HS.

I guess I can't think of any other South graduate to play mens hockey for UND. Yeah, yeah, he never wore a South jersey; he just graduated from FSHS while playing for the USHL's Fargo Force. I know. I know.

I know there've been Fargo North graduates (Williams, Kaiser, O'Leary), but I can't come up with any Fargo South graduates.

    Anyone?

    ??? Moving on. :o)

  17. This was my main point from the start. NO WAY Rocco is playing anywhere but the top two lines. Therefore, you either have him on the wing on the top line or break up the chemistry of Parks-Rowney-McMillian. It would be an awful waste of talent if he's sitting on the third line. He won't see nearly as much ice. Even at less than 100% when he did play, he was the best player (if not close) on the ice at all times. He's too dynamic and explosive to not see top 6 minutes.

100% agreed....move the little guy to wing to start the season; see how he adjusts. I guarentee that line won't have to play a ton of D. If it doesn't work you simply shuffle some lines up.

  18. I think even Toewser started his UND career on the third line...also, we are talking 5x5 lines, there is no reason Rocco couldn't get big time special teams minutes and play 5x5 from the 3rd line to start the year.

If you don't want Rocco on the third line, and Rocco will not play wing, and you don't want to split up the chemistry of Rowney, MacMillan and Parks, you could always go with something like this:

    Knight with Kristo and Chyzyk

    Rocco with O'Donnell and Caggiula

    Rowney with MacMillan and Parks

St Clair with Rodwell and Pattyn

    Mac and Schmaltz

    Forbert and Mattson

    Simpson and Gleason

He did, but look at who he was playing with. Also, our first two lines were jacked. As far as your lineup goes, you simply shifted your order....that Rowney line is still the second line in terms of talent. You guys are all right, I think the fact we have such a hard time nailing down some great line combos is due to the outstanding depth this year. I sure hope this is the year. I was teased young in life as the first two national championships I was able to go to (96 or 97 and 2001) we won. Since then I have traveled many miles only to suffer terrible losses. This has to be the year, it's been too long.
