  1. How did Team USA manage to win the 1980 gold medal with that Eruzione slug and an NHL back-up goalie on the team? Throwing 14 NHL draft picks into the line-up is no sure-thing. How did Kentucky's vaunted freshman do last year in hoops? That's right...first-round tournament loss. Not in the NCAA's...the NIT.

What did the vaunted Kentucky team do the year before that?

  2. Faceoffs are as much to do with effort and desire then talent. You have to want to impose you will on the other team, this team wants to be imposed on. That and Patyn spending the whole game proving how tough he is, not a good trait in a captain.

Agreed with your f/o comment. Pattyn is not a very good hockey player.

  3. I can handle poor play if the boys are out there working their butts off... nothing could have been farther from the truth tonight. I am embarrassed to be a fan of UND hockey today. We got beat to most pucks, passing was horrid and dump and chase only works if you have guys willing to hustle and chase. Not the case. The only other people as disinterested in the hockey game other than the players were the coaching staff. I kept looking over at Hak expecting some kind of passion from behind the bench, if there was any I missed it. I would love to say that there was some kind of bright spot to work from here on out but I don't know what that would be. I suppose you could say that it can't get much worse, at least from the effort side of things. I can't remember the last time I was so disgusted by lack of heart.

You said it right, the dump and chase is a proven winning system....however it is a system where you actually have to go real hard to make it work. Besides 2-3 players on this team, there are no other players that actually move their feet. Last night they had the effort of a men's league team. This season is fading pretty fast. Also, I want to see gothberg and mark needs to play (unless he physically can't walk).

  4. Notes from Brad's gamer:

-UND players had a meeting after the game

-UND had 5 SOG in 9 power play chances

-In the last six games, opponents are 11 for 36 (30.6 percent) on the power play against UND

Also, I heard booing at the end of the 2nd period. Were fans booing the team or were they booing something a SLU player did?

What was their face off %? I have never seen more lost face offs in any game, at any level, in my life.

I believe there may have been a little booing but not sure.

  6. So you're saying Bergeron needs to be evaluated based on the whole package, not just goals and assists, which is the method you choose to base your evaluations of junior players you seldom have seen play. I'm surprised you didn't add in a line about playing hockey in the summer time with guys that have skated with Bergeron. Nice try, bud.

I don't just look at goals and assists when looking at some of our recruits. I look at everything I can. Also, I never once said I'm pissed they're recruits I simply brought up their numbers are sub par. Which they are, I have never witnessed voltin, Rowe or Wilkie play....I have watched Bergeron play....at a very high level. Sorry for the rambling I'm typing from my phone.

Also, I'm not the guy to drop lines unless it's true. Let's get that straight. You seem like a good guy, ha.

  7. If I could add any one player to the Penguins roster, I can think of 10 guys I would choose over Bergeron...

Toews, Stamkos, Tavares, Kessel, Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Kopitar, Getzlaf, Kane, and both Sedins.

But that is subjective and most certainly debatable, and I respect your right to an opinion that is different than that of my own.

I would take PB over both sedins (unless I could take them in a package), he's much better than kopitar, I would take him over kessel (easy), maybe Getz and maybe Tavares. Him and toews are equal to me. Toews plays with better linemates. But PB is more used as a shut down player, that also puts in big goals( check out his plus minus over the past few years). Look at his playoff numbers. Guys great, not Crosby, Malkin or stamkos good though. Also, I hate the bruins I simply respect the type if player Bergeron is.

  8. But aren't recruits evaluated and their predicted impact on college hockey based on their junior stats only?

Go look at his junior numbers. Also his offensive numbers in the nhl are great just not elite. His face off % , plus minus, block shots and headsy play get him to top ten. Now go look at those stats for the recruits I was speaking about, they are absolutely garbage. Nice try bud.

  9. Setting aside my personal bias, I can admit that Bergeron deserves to be on the list. Probably even in the top 20, but top 10 is a bit of a reach in my opinion. They also excluded Letang and Kunitz, which is just as ridiculous if not more so.

FWIW, I think Suter is way too high at #2.

PB is a top ten overall player take it to the bank. Don't simply look at his offensive numbers.

  10. Please look at the one sentence out of your post that I put in italicized bold print and underlined. That sentence (generally speaking) is only true in North America. Not so much in Europe, which is exactly what I have been trying to open people's eyes to for the last page or two of this thread. I don't know the exact reason why that is so, but if I were to take a guess I would say there's a good chance it has to do with the general culture towards the game and attitudes that players are exposed to while they are kids growing up around the game. In my opinion the European style of hockey exhibits a better attitude towards understanding that sometimes these things happen in the heat of battle and they tend to not take it personally. If you're on the receiving end of a big hit you merely keep your composure and continue on playing the game, the way it should be. There is no need to go into meltdown mode and instigate a fight. That does not accomplish anything. Nobody is going out there making these kind of plays with the goal of injuring somebody, the goal is to break up a scoring chance or ride the player off the puck or break up a pass attempt... anything to make a play within the context of the hockey game. Sometimes those plays are made recklessly without regard for safety, I will concede that much, but I do not for one minute buy this "intent to injure" garbage that whiny fans like to throw around. The only intent to injure that I have ever witnessed in hockey is a bare-knucked fist to the face. The other stuff that often leads to fights, while it can result in injuries... injury is not the primary goal of the player dishing out those hits, it is merely the unintended consequence. Hockey is a contact sport that moves at a very high speed, sometimes these things happen. People need to understand this.

    There are fights in Europe.

  11. But, Goon, we have the nicest arena and it's full. Nobody can hold a candle to that, can they?

I'm not calling for hak's job but if you cannot see the benefits not only the arena brings but also the programs history and workout facilities you're blind. Sorry I tried to say that in the nicest way possible :)

  12. Agreed. I'd like a nice 10 game winning streak before Christmas and not the usual mad scramble to make the NCAA's in January and February.

I would like these teams simply to play well before Christmas. I would also like them to work hard before Christmas. Neither has happened over the past 2-3 years. As many coaches say, "they are going through the motions" and it is very obviously. Many people on here were super happy they ripped off 59 shots last Saturday, I was more concerned with the fact they still could not score while also letting up a 3rd period lead to lose and tie to a team that is unranked. There is something a tad different with this team than in years past. Hopefully it is simply the injury bug.

  13. Spot-on. It's a shame that some good coaches are run out of town (especially in college football) because they can't win an NCAA title. It's not that easy.

One hockey coach I'd like to see win an NCAA title before he retires: Dick Umile of UNH.

One hockey coach I'd like to see win an NCAA title before he leaves: Dave Hakstol of UND.

  14. I need one ticket for Friday night's game. I am looking for the cheapest ticket possible as I simply need to get a buddy in the door. We already have lower bowl seats available to sit in I simply need to get him in the door. Message me if anyone is looking to get some cash for one of their un-used tickets.

  15. Good article for some debate. However, any list of the top 50 players in the league that has Kyle Turris on it and leaves off Patrice Bergeron I give no credence to.

Haha no doubt. FYI, Bleacher Report is a joke. PB is top 10....and I stand by that.

  16. Very different players...and they tried to put Rocco with Knight and Kristo last year with marginal success. Rocco doesn't play a role very well. Heis über talented, but just doesn't fit well. He didn't fit with the WJC team either. People pumped up his two goal gold medal game, but they were goals I could've scored- one off his rear end.

Also very true. I am having a hard time figuring him out. When I watch him he appears to be the best player on the ice most of the time, or at least the hardest working/skilled player on the ice. One thing I have been saying about him for quite some time is that he takes some pretty risky chances (the exact reason he was sat at the WJCs). Also, at first glance his shot appears good but I am starting to doubt that or else he would have more goals by now through two seasons (yes, we have a relatively large sample size). I think he should switch his style of play to become more of a disher. Use that uber burst to create space and move the puck to the soft spots rather than going to the hole. With how he handles the puck in the O-zone he could have 2 assists per game. Maybe put O'Donnell on his line. I don't know, just my thoughts from watching him the past two years.

  17. I saw Friday, not Saturday.

We can disagree on the Rocco vs Nelson assessment, but here are the facts that sway me. 28 goals by Nelson in 11-12, 4 for Rocco so far. Nelson a #1 draft pick, Rocco a #2. 6 foot 3, 5 foot 6. I like Rocco, but I think Nelson simply has a better knack around the net, and last I checked it was goals scored, not scoring chances that put Ws on the board.

What are the differences in this team vs that team in personnel upfront?

Rocco and Jewels and Chyzyk vs Kristo and Knight and Nelson (advantage 2011-2012 team)

Mark Mac and OD and Parks vs Mark Mac and Parks and Rowney(mostly same guys- pretty much a draw in talent, but 2011-2012 Rowney scored 18 goals...)

The General, Gaarder and Rodwell/Mitch vs Mario, Gaarder and Rodwell/Mitch (pretty much a draw, if anything 2011-2012 advantage for Mario's green blood)

Tambellini, Murphy, and Johnson vs whomever the 2011-2012 could get healthy (upside potential won by 2013-2014, but thee guys have a combined 3 goals and 7 assists so far...not exactly killing it)

Completely agree with this statement, please people do not compare Rocco to Brock Nelson. He is like one year older and plays on a line with John Taveras.
