  1. The celebratory nature on this board is down right appalling. I understand what the university would have been through had the name stuck, however over the last three years for the first time in the our university's history it wasn't in honor of the tribes. It became a a political football, a pawn in the quest for conference exclusion, a page-turner for the Grand Forks Herald, and one more example of the overbearing NCAA bullying its member oblivious of its own hypocrisies. The logo allowed me to see the inept nature of our educational leadership in this state, who completely mishandled this situation ever since the 'hostile and abusive' mandate was announced. It's a shame to see our leaders waited to get involved until they had some stake in the game. Tim O'Keefe is being heralded as a martyr at this point, if we would have laid this scenario at three years ago 90% of you would be calling for his head.

The only threat in the sanctioning was the loss of the Big Sky, which don't get me wrong is a tremendous threat to our olympic sports (football included). The fact that Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and South Dakota State wouldn't schedule us has no bearing on the success our athletic department whatsoever. Hell we have played NDSU less than a handful of times in most sports and 0 times in football since the move to D1, what are the chances we would play any of those schools within the next decade anyhow? We'll play as many games against Minnesota and Wisconsin in post season competition as we would have at the Ralph ever again anyway.

I realize the name is retired and for all intensive purposes will be for good at this point. It would take a complete culture shift in many places Standing Rock, SBoHE, UND'S Leadership (all of which of lost any confidence in throughout this debacle). What was done at the polls yesterday is the equivalent of pulling the plug on a loved one, who by no fault of their own or what they stood for, became too burdened by what was going on around it. Please let's shift the tone from gloating to respecting the tradition that expired last night. Many of you are calling this a bitter sweet moment, Take a second to think about how the villain shifted from the NCAA to Standing Rock to Tom Douple to the SBoHE to Robert Kelley to Logo Supporters and how the issue changed from Tribal Support/feelings to conference inclusion and bureaucratic greed. To retire the name for the reasons we did is far from a time to celebrate, had it been to a tribal vote I would at least respect it. This moment is a hell of a lot more bitter than it is sweet.

Agreed. That's what I was trying to say earlier....you simply explain this much better than I do.

  2. This is definitely not the time people should be excluded from an important decision.

I'm pretty sure we wer simply joking...or speaking out of frustration. Obviously everyone would have to have a say....although if it's Norse or Norseman I will vomit. Also, Ben better be able to whip up another sweet logo :o)

  3. I'd love to see a few teams in the NHL all wear full cages for a year or two, and see if the full cage teams are able to play better and with more confidence, instead of constantly trying to protect their faces.

I would be proved right, of course, but the NHL and its players are as dumb as ScottM and others around here, and their fear of being labeled as weak keeps them from seeing the possible benefits.

It's funny, it's always the ones that try to constantly put out this aura of toughness that are the most fearful people.

OK, so what makes hockey players that wear half shields fearful? I am pretty sure you're simply getting upset now. You also don't know much about hockey...as I have said 10 times now (this only goes to this guy...no one else).

  4. Goalie pads were already mandated to be smaller a few years back. And guess what? The goalies adapted and got better. At all levels. The only players oversized equipment helps are the less talented players with limited mobility. They are generally flushed out of the system by the time NCAA or NHL comes around. Gloves, blockers, chest pads, leg pads, even breezers were reduced in size by the new rules and it hasn't had much effect. The fact is that the goaltenders of today are much more athletic than even 10 years ago. I have no problem with progress in goalie equipment just like there has been exponential improvement in player equipment.

Agreed with everything you just said....when mandates change....teams/players adjust.

  5. Love the sioux. I have a bad feeling about this. I hope we as fans get to choose the new mascot in 100 years until then be north dakota and no more.

Yup I agree. Anyway, why are you all against getting rid of the property tax? I live in MN now and have stayed out of ND politics.

  6. In my 36 years of living in the Twin Cities, not once have I ever felt unsafe in downtown mpls. The area around the Target Center is as safe as it gets, I have no idea why you think otherwise. You sound like a country bumpkin who's afraid to go to the big city.

OK, I live in the Cities. Yes, right by the target center and target field is somewhat safe (at 2am) but if you get bar hopping and get further away from that central location....lets just say, you can end up somewhere not many people from GF would want to be at that hour.

  7. I think the concern is, if hockey starts becoming like soccer (1-0, 2-0, 2-1 games), people will get frustrated and stop buying tickets and stop watching it on television because it would be much cheaper to sit at home and watch paint dry. The NHL opened up the game after the 2004-05 lockout and it was a big boost to TV ratings and fan interest. I for one do not want to go back to the days of 250 pound slugs on skates who couldn't shoot or pass worth a crap, but thrived in the league because they could clutch, grab, hold, hook and mug guys and not get penalized for it. The 1990's version of the NHL was almost unwatchable and I don't think the league would have survived long-term if they hadn't done what they did to open up the game. The NCAA would be wise to follow the NHL's lead in this.

Yes I agree with you on much of what you said, I think the NCAA rules should mimick the NHL's, since that is the ultimate league. Now whether we should follow the shootout rule is up for debate as a shootout win would affect the outcome in NCAA more than the NHL as there is far less games in NCAA hockey. Good points, but I think there may be more scoring per game in the WCHA than the NHL...not sure though. The amount of special teams time in the WCHA is terrible, that leads to the increased scoring. BTW, yes 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 would be pretty low....but I really don't see too many of those games in the WCHA. Sioux goofs had one....but I actually enjoyed watching that Sioux win. All in all, I rarely see a 1-0 game in college hockey. Very rare.

  8. When is the last time you've been to downtown Mpls? Seriously, it's safe. You can find trouble after bar close in Mpls, StP, or Grand Forks for that matter. You should be able to find accomodations....there are almost 10,000 hotel rooms in Mpls. It's a first class city.

    Two weekends ago.

  9. Have you been to downtown Minneapolis lately? Cops everywhere!! Also, there are tons of hotels downtown. Many of them that are connected by the skyway so you don't even need to go outside!!

$200/night (besides Best Western and Holiday Inn). Yes, tons of cops....for a good reason. Either way...I'll be there.

  10. Why don't you watch UFC if you enjoy seeing people get hurt for no real reason?

Why do NHLers always turn their heads when they go to block a shot? Are they all pussies now, because "a little blood makes them uneasy"

How bout I hit you in the face with a puck or a stick? then you can do your internet tough guy routine.

I love all the macho men on this site that like to pretend they are as tough as NHL players, and try to live vicariously through them. You're not out there taking the abuse in the toughest, best hockey league in the world, so quit talking like you know anything about it. :silly: Just because you talk a good game of how tough you are, and how you don't care about injuries or whatever, it falls flat coming from some guy on the internet.

Well I never played in the NHL but I did play a year of juniors...with only a half shield. Never was hurt too bad. I believe you're playing Mr internet tough guy calling me out (through the internet...hahaha). I wasn't trying to say I promote injuries, I was just saying if the sight of blood makes you feel uneasy....quit watching (it's not like every game there is a nasty facial injury....maybe 2-3 a year). Yes you will get cut every blue moon, but I would rather be able to see oncoming traffic more clearly than a little cut on my lip. I have not worn a full cage mask in 10 years and the only injury I ever got was a little cut on my eyebrow (hitting my teamates stick jumping into the bench). Many of you seem to think that the first game with no full cages instantly mean injuries right away. Yes, there will be more little cuts but the gruesome injuries you guys are talking about rarely happen. Also, it looks as though the NCAA would go to a 3/4 shield....not a half shield. Go check out Heatly's visor, thing is almost a full mask. It's just a little thinner and also has good peripheral vision.

  11. Let me get this straight the NCAA works with various NA groups/tribes/councils for several years developing the original policy - which was to eliminate all NA names used by NCAA schools. Then in less than a month, the NCAA caves and turns itself into a clearing house for perpetuating and validating the continued use of NA names. They have done nothing to minimize the national media exposure of NA names because the names most associated with the NCAA NA names are still in use. To the general public nothing has changed and things are actually worse because the names have been rationalized. Your minor adjustment and sense of accomplishment sounds like a mess to me and on a national scale it accomplished nothing.

    Haha....I like this post.

  12. Downtown Mpls and the Warehouse District are extremely safe. Target Center is next to Target Field, and how many times have you heard people complain about crime when they talk about Target Field? They don't.

???? No it isn't. I am not talking about 7-9pm.....I am talking about 10-2am...when people go out drinking after the games. Also, where is everyone going to stay??? The Best Western or Holiday Inn...the two shabbiest hotels in Minny?

  13. Can you please explain what these "home field advantages" are that the Gophers get more than any other team.

Well, they host every single Final Five. They also get regionals and final tourneys quite frequently. What other team do you know of that has this option? I know it is out of convenience...which I am fine with. However, I am just saying they get an advantage...that's all.

  14. Allow me to respectfully disagree and here's why:

Twenty years ago the average WCHA game had 9 total goals scored. Today it is roughly half that number with about 5 total goals per game scored. (Brad Schlossman of the Herald has done the analysis in the past.)

In a game with 9 goals a fluke goal is 11% of the scoring.

In a game with 5 goals a fluke goal is 20% of the scoring.

Put another way, in today's game a single fluke goal in a game is twice as likely to decide the outcome as it was 20 years ago.

I guess I'd like to see the game be more likely decided by skill and less likely decided by bad ice spots or "funny" spots in the boards or glass.

Well the fact that the goalie pads are so much bigger is the obvious answer....this is already proven. However, I also think defensive schemes have become much better, no longer do guys walk through everyone and deke the goalie for a goal, more often than not, the goal is a garbage goal scored from a rebound off a screened shot. I have no problem watching a 3-1 game. If you want every game to be 7-5, than you truly don't enjoy watching the defensive side of the game, nor have any sympathy for the man who has to play goalie.

  15. Four avoidable facial injuries in tonight's Stanley Cup game. Checked from behind face first into the boards, 4 minute minor high sticking, referee ran over by an opposing player, and a puck to Steven Gionta's face. Coming to an NCAA rink near you....pathetic.

Haha, you are a riot. And if you think the NHL will be getting cages....you're crazy. Why don't you just quit watching the game then if a little blood makes you feel so uneasy.

  16. The Target Center is essentially only going to host one weekend of hockey all year long so to expect them to make any major attempt at making the facility more "hockey friendly" is not realistic at all. We just have to accept it for what it is. A convenient location but not a great place for hockey.

I have to say that I think the area around the Target Center is not quite as fan friendly as some portray. There have been more crime issues in that area in recent times. Part of that is probably due to the light rail transit. It can get out of hand down there in a hurry at night. I was down there this last weekend and it was a tad crazy. Not sure that area is quite as family friendly as I'd like to see for an event like this. It may be good for your average 20-something looking to party. But a lot of the fans that go to the playoffs aren't in that consumer demographic and bring their kids.

OK, you pretty much wrote exactly what I was thinking. The location is great....being in Minneapolis, however, I think many UND fans portay this similar to their Final Five weekends in St. Paul (at the X). Downtown Minny is much different and is not as welcoming as downtown St. Paul. The crime is terrible downtown Minny. I still think this is not a great place to have this event, but again, I also have no idea where else they could have it.

  17. Yeah cause so many Final Fives have been played at Mariucci. :silly:

Pretty sure you understand exactly what I mean. No other team in college hockey (not even Boston teams) get more of a home field advantage than the Gophers...no team...not ever.

  18. Location is great...what are you talking about??!! 4 schools are within 6 hours of Minneapolis. Plus, the Target Center is right downtown. Plenty places to stay/eat/etc. The one thing that you could say wasn't ideal is the facility. Yeah, they had hockey there before (Final 5, state tourbnament) and it wasn't great. But they are going to renovate the place. I would assume that part of the renovation is to make it better for hockey. True ht X would have been the best location, But I think with these renovations taking place, it will still be good.

Sorry guys....by location I meant venue. The Target Center is an absolute dump. I was at the final five there before they moved it to the Xcel and it wasn't that great. Again, sorry for the confusion....yes the location is great (especially since I live here :o)
