That is why Marchand is a dirty POS.

I also played, and the minute I could go half shield, I did...and as described, not for any kind of machismo...because I could see better. I have never put the full mask back on. Not in intramurals, not in men's league...I have a couple scars from some sticks, but nothing that is disfiguring (I wasn't going to be a model anyway). I make a very good living with my brain, so there wasn't any cognitive damage.
As for playing with the full shield your whole life...yes, you do team practice and games in a full mask, but we spent way more hours on the outdoor in nothing but a stocking cap. Again, nothing life threatening. I certainly got a bloody nose and a black eye or two.
Here's my analogy- its like having sex with your wife of ten years with a condom even though you're fixed...why???
Agreed.

Hey, thanks for the 4-1-1! My point is that at one time, even wearing a helmet made you a sissy. Then it was a half-shield. Full cage or shield next? That was my point.
Yeah....I got that that
. What I'm trying to say is that the mandate for a helmet (brain) and potentially visor (eyes) are so much more serious than facial and jaw wounds.
-
I don't have to endure the peer pressure that the players are subjected to. As a already told you, it is a macho thing and nobody wants to be labeled as soft. It is the very same mentality that used to apply to visors and (if you go back far enough) helmets. Look, I can lead you to water but I can't force you to drink it. If you refuse to see things for what they are, there is nothing more I can do to help open your eyes to what is so blatantly obvious to anybody with an open mind.
Ditto....however the macho thing is your own creation.
-
You just say that because you think everybody with an opinion different than your own is unreasonable.
Haha read your own post responses. You think you know more than the players themselves.

There are actually people that have said that the cage probably causes concussions and makes the game dirtier because the sticks tend come up when the player wear them, I hate them myself. Former Fighting Sioux Perry Berezan once said that.
I fully agree with that stance, you inherently tend to stay away from someone's face more often out of mutual respect. Another reason I like fighting to be allowed (although I hate most staged fights). You don't have guys like rau constantly beaking everyone out on the ice. You have to respect the game and your opponent. You u talk trash you better be ready to back it up. That is why I like guys like Cory Perry. The game polices itself.

My arguments make perfect sense if you have good enough comprehension skills. I get that technically an argument can be made for players having slightly better vision without a cage, but then again you could go one better and say their vision would improve even more without a helmet. But playing without a helmet is stupid, as is playing without a cage. The level of play that we currently see in college hockey is incredible, and all of those players have full facial protection, so therefore I have a hard time taking your argument seriously. And once again I'm going to say this because I can't help you notice you have yet to address this point... each and every hockey player that reaches a level where full facial protection becomes optional has already gotten used to the cage or full shield by having worn one for at least 10 years. Once they're that used to it there is no need whatsoever to take it off. At the end of the day you have to realize that it's really just a macho thing more than anything else.
Again, as I have mentioned 10 times now, I fully understand the helmet argument. I get it. I also believe you that some old times may say it distracts them to wear a helmet, however a significant head blow is so much worse then taking a shot to the lower part of your face.
As to your response that I haven't addressed wearing the full cage for a long period of time.....I have ten times or so. The speed of the NHL ( and chl and college) is such the even impairing your vision slightly can cause damaging effects when someone the size and speed of Milan Lucic comes crashing in on you. These players need to react instantly. Even at the college level (which is SO much slower than the NHL) I believe this would cut down on many of the injuries (check out genoways stance). Full cages impair a decent amount of peripheral vision and impair the vision 90% straight down; itechs are better but still affect your vision straight down and tend to fog up in warmer arenas. If they would create something that took care of those issues I would listen. Again, I'm concerned about the puck carrier.
On a side note, I play in a very competitive men's league with former D1 and junior players.....are you saying the reason I play with a half shield is to be macho? Are you kidding me? I wear the half shield because the game is easier and I can see more of the ice not wearing a full mask. I am not telling you my guess or what I think....I am telling you fact.
-
I am a hockey fan and get both sides of this issue and can still remember helmet-less Craig MacTavish skating around in the 1980's and 1990's. Remember the uproar of players and mandatory helmets back then? Even just 5-7 years ago, you were considered a sissy if you wore a half-shield. Then Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby join the league and now plenty of players wear the half-shield.
I played competitive softball for years and remember pitchers experimenting with the hockey-type catcher helmet when they played. They were laughed at and guys intentionally tried to 'spin the dummy'. Go out and watch a competitive tournament nowadays and it's a rarity to NOT see a pitcher wearing the protective helmet.
It's all fun and games until the next Bill Masterson happens courtesy of a 100 MPH slap-shot that hits someone in the head. Just ask Ron Harris, he'll tell you.
FYI not wearing a helmet and not covering your jaw are two completely different topics.
-
No I do not understand that you play better without a full mask. I have been watching the college game since just before the full facial protection was mandated over 30 years ago and I have not seen a decline in the level of play.
That is because the equipment the players use is better....you can't understand this? That was honestly your counter? You need to try harder buddy. Sit down and come up with something better than that absolutely ridiculous statement. If the Sioux team (2013 team) took off their facemasks you would see a higher level of play on average. Ask any real player that actually played at a competitive level. But you can't understand that because you really don't know much about hockey. You just think you do because you've watched the Sioux play for the past 40 years. Sorry to be a dick but all your arguments make no sense.
-
Go back a few posts and you will see where I stated that I would be in favor of mandatory kevlar socks and neck guards in addition to the full facial protection. The hand and the foot are already protected as well as they possibly can be within reason, the face and neck are not. Do you think the full facemask is ridiculous in football too? I know you're probably going to say football and hockey are two completely different sports, and I would agree with that. But I would say that full facial protection is needed in hockey even more so than it is in football. There is nothing in football that will damage your face as severely as a 100 MPH slapshot.
Ok, then baseball players have to wear cages too....and pitcher must pitch with a helmet and full face mask. What your talking about completely changes the game. Do you understand that you play better without a full face mask? Seriously, the first time I played competitive hockey without a mask I instantly saw things better. My teammates seemed more open. I'm guessing you've never played. Facial injuries in the NHL are no more common than any other injury. Except that barring a broken jaw.....u can usually keep playing.

Blah blah, blah, your pro-fighting stance is well noted. However, the book that I referenced overwhelmingly shoots down each and every one of your pro-fighting arguments. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the days of the goon in hockey are numbered. The game can't continue its knuckle-dragging ways forever. I promise you the full cage is in the college game to stay and it will come to the NHL someday, although perhaps not in our lifetime.
Fighting ending in hockey may end. I believe it should stay but the amount of staged fights is ridiculous, it gives our game a bad name. I still believe college hockey will go to a 2/3 visor in the next 5-10 years. The more the college game changes away from the NHL the more kids head north. The NHL will never (in my lifetime, I'm 28) wear full visor unless somehow the game changes or the type of facemask changes
to allow better vision. There is a reason Crosby went to the jaw protecter only and not a full visor/cage.
-
I don't care if they took off the cage at age 20 or age 16, either way they were wearing if for a very long time and used to it long before they were allowed to take it off. What you're saying about players having their vision obstructed by the cage was being said about helmets back in the '70s. I'm sure some people would say wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle impairs your vision, but what person in his right mind would consider riding a motorcycle without a helmet? I have always felt strongly about this topic, but Crosby's recent broken jaw has only validated what I have preached all along. Proper protective gear would have prevented that injury, there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever.
Why are you so concerned with a jaw? What about the neck? They have never created a proper neck guard...why aren't you bringing up other parts of the body which aren't covered? Why simply the lower part of one's face? If Crosby would have attempted to catch the puck and broke his hand would you be calling for the NHL to create a mandate on players putting additional padding on their gloves? Or if he took a slapper to the side of the foot...would you be calling for a mandate that all players must wear skate plates no questions asked?
Significant blows to the head at high speeds can cause life altering brain damage....a stick or puck to the eye could potentially alter your vision forever thus changing your quality of life. I get the helmet (especially in today's game) and I'm for a grandfather of the visor. But a full facemask is ridiculous....these guys are professionals.

As I've told you before these guys wore a full shield or cage from Mites all the way through college hockey, so don't give me that lame excuse about vision. They're used to it by the time they reach the NHL, so there is no need to take it off once you finally get to that level after so many years of wearing it. The best player in the league just missed the last month of the regular season due to having his jaw broken by a puck to the face. That injury would have been prevented with proper protective gear. I realize the players aren't going to be the ones to take the proactive role as they have to be macho so as not to be labeled soft or whatever, but you'd think the owners would want to do a better job of keeping their multi-million dollar investments off the injured list and on the ice. Leaving these guys vulnerable to gory facial injuries is pure stupidity. As for the steel blades being too dangerous, I realize you were being sarcastic but that issue must be addressed before somebody bleeds to death. I support mandatory kevlar socks and neck guards at all levels of hockey.
How many players in the NHL come from college? 30-40% max? And of those college players how many went right from college to the NHL full time....10%, maybe? Most of the NHL players have worn half (well 2/3) shield since they were 16. Do you have any idea the kind of jump it is from high school to juniors? Or for that matter college to the NHL? It is night and day. They should be wearing 2/3 visors is college....I believe the creativity would actually be better and the game would be more fun to watch.
-
Although I prefer the full shield or cage that is mandatory at every level of hockey from the time kids first start playing Mites all the way up to college (you'd think those guys would be used to it by the time they reach the NHL), I will settle for visors at this time just as I settled for helmets 30 years ago. But as time goes on the game will continue to evolve and safety must evolve with it. First we got helmets mandated, visors are coming soon and someday hopefully full facial protection. Sidney Crosby would not have suffered a broken jaw in March had he been wearing a full shield or cage.
Are full body balloons coming next? Or should we just play video games so no one is hurt. Maybe we should only play roller hockey because steel blades are too dangerous. These guys nknow what they're signing up for, as I've told u before full facial shields remove much of your peripheral vision and when combining that with NHL speed there will be way more concussions. I am starting to lean towards grandfathering in visors due to eye damage but the league will stop at that unless the game significantly changes over the next 30 years. FYI the helmet rule has nothing to do with this debate.

You're entitled to your opinion, but keep in mind that somebody who writes for The Hockey News surely has more credibility on such matters than somebody who publishes a blog based on his own self-serving interests. If you choose to keep your eyes closed to the real problem in hockey only to make something out of nothing regarding a non-issue, well that's on you I guess. The way I see it, if a player can successfully draw a penalty... more power to him. The crusade against embellishment just really bores me to death. The only crusades I will get behind are the ones to rid hockey of goon tactics and to mandate the use of a cage or full shield on all helmets. It's about time franchises do something to protect their multi-million dollar investments. Embellishment? Seriously, who cares (besides you and Don Cherry)?
I mistakenly gave u a +1 based on the first half of you post, however the use of full shields is ridiculous....it won't happen nor should it. Regarding embellishment I too agree that not much can be done so those of you who can't control yourselves over the topic must chill out. Lemieux was a legend at drawing calls. I definitely hold players that play responsibly that much more up on the totem pole but again, there's not much you can do. It's not like this just started.

Has anyone seen anything on the reason Steve Johnson stepped down as UNO Asst? Has he landed anywhere yet? I apologize if this was already discussed.
I have been wondering the same thing. He's a great guy...and coach.

And, in other news, the NY Rangers just fired John Tortorella
Can't say you didn't call it Goon :o)

Anyone know what network the USA world game is on? Everything on the net is saying NBCSN but my guide definitely show Indy/horse races during the time slot the game should be on. I have Dish.

To play for Red River? And how come he's not staying?
Looks like he was on the Midget AA team....I've heard there is a big drop off from AAA to AA. He is young though.

2013 incoming class officially announced
http://www.undsports...ICLE_PLAYER_ID=
*Note: release states that another freshman could possibly be added at a later date
I like it....I still think we're going to be a lot better than people think. Those freshman are all nice players.

Am I not the only one that thinks that the hockey teams in ND don't have the type of depth they once had on good years? I know there was that awesome 2010 central team and the 2008 red river team but it seems like teams were deep like that with more regularity in the early 2000's and the 90's
Agreed....however my other argument was there used to be way more D1 kids but now hockey is being played everywhere. Either way, I think teams in GF are making a comeback but the state as a whole is getting weaker.

Umm...how about the trades for Leddy and the goalie-go-round in the past few years? Major role players from a few years ago were jettisoned almost immediately after the cup win (Big Buff, Kris Versteeg, etc.). This team is built around trades more than you think.
Hahaha, I'm talking about pulling in stars rather than building them. Leddy was still in college when that trade happened (he actually underperformed that year too) so no one new what type of player he was going to be. FYI, Leddy isn't great yet...he has a great D partner. He's solid though. Also, they traded those players (all who were drafted by the Hawks I believe or who came up through Rockord) for additional role players/draft picks so, again, they are not going out and trading all their picks for top end talent....they build it. Are simply disagreeing with me to disagree...you do that a lot. Many NHL fans know that ChiTown has built their team as good/smart as any other team out there.
Bam! :o)

Toews for the Selke. He'll have a tough going against Bergeron, he's one of the most underrated players in the NHL.
-
Hmmm....I thought Kasey was the goalie and Matt was a forward for that team? Matt was younger right?
Double checked with a Central grad buddy of mine and he says it was 2003 or 2004. Kasey was a senior, and Matt was a Junior.
Are they not brothers?
Casey was an 02 03 grad, yes they are brothers.
1st round tonight

Bergeron is solid....but obviously not a fighter.
