I’ll reserve judgement until I see what pieces Berry lands for roster additions.
In all honesty, not one player that has entered the portal was a “make or break” player. There were some surprises, sure. Like if Gaber or Frisch would have entered the portal instead of playing another year.
Every team will have portal losses, even the big boys. That’s just the new “fun” of being in the portal era unfortunately.
We’ll see who Bubs can get to sign from the portal and go from there.

    Yeah…we shall see

Very curious. How many of these departures were “tough” talks from the coaching staff? How many of these departures were  the player/family advisor driven?

I’d bet my next 3 mortgage payments Moore’s was an advisor discussion. Clearly something is not right.

@brianvf nailed it. Making hard decisions that will improve the team.

Don’t take this as “coming after you or anything” but from the past few days you were def in the camp of using the portal could be a negative long term, now you are fine with an underclassmen (portz) taking off. Reason?

    Love this.

So far so good for UND next season. This is why I'm closely watching what happens with Albrecht / Portal Forward. If both happen, there's becoming a pattern that I really do think is damaging for the program long term.

As I post this, Portz hits the portal. This is going to sound harsh, but I love this move. Kudos to Berry.

I’m more of a fan with developing our own players…but given the current environment we’re in we kind of need that Berg kid. Plus portz, albrecht, Ness, Montgomery etc…interchangeable 3rd/4th liners. Kids like Kunz, strinden, etc have to play and figure it out. Dividends will be paid during their upperclassmen years.

What happened at Minnesota last year would be the same thing as BC this year. The Boston College Freshman class is so loaded. There is no pushing back, they need to come in and play.

Edit: These kind of moves from Boston College and Minnesota, answer the "what kind of program are you".

Is your program about development, winning…maybe both (hopefully)? Yes, BC’s incoming class is nice and appears to be nicer the following year if my memory serves me right…but there are sophomores, juniors etc that need the opportunity to play bigger minutes/better roles. Keeping a guy for that 5th year comes across with a bit of desperation from my angle. Especially considering teams like BC, MN, UM, BU etc recruit well year over year.

This x 100!!! Denver, Michigan and the Goofs are not immune to the impact of early departures, no team is. I know it's been a tough year all around for UND athletics, but we are not going away......as much as Rodentia would like it to happen.

Agreed we aren’t going away. But we will need to change our recruiting strategy. I think we need to go older.

For sure.  And there's only four teams left playing, so you're not going to get a ton more players added to the portal with them...what you see now is pretty close to what you're gonna have available for options.

I'm hoping that the coaches are in talks with Haider, Persson, and Pavicich for goalie.
And Warren, Koch, Pyke, and Palocsik for dmen.
And of course Berg for another forward/center option.

The ones we are after are still in the portal no?

  8. Awesome to see Jaksen Panzer’s last 10 games, he’s on an absolute heater. Definitely needs to play another year but I was getting a bit worried there. Curious if there was some sort of injury. His production will still not look good over the course of the whole year, but these last 10 games is a huge step in the right direction.

This is going to be Berrys chance to prove what kind of coach he is, struggled this year now he gets to reload and hopefully change his style and put the team competitive with all the top teams. He has had puck possesion teams before so he knows how to do it and the other team can’t score if they don’t have the puck.

Reloading won’t be an option. This team could be good, but they will need to outperform expectations.

Does our coaching staff have the balls to play like we've seen the B1G play during the last 48 hours?

B1G teams got a three goal lead and pulled the stops, threw open the throttles, and went 8, no, 8, no, 9, no, 11!

UND plays from the "Lennon-Schweigert-Berry" mindset: Get up two scores and "manage" your way to victory. Notice has been served; that game is gone

UND needs to see, realize, learn, and act. Speed kills. Defensive responsibility now means the puck on your stick in the offensive zone or busting ass to reacquire the puck. "Managing" a lead is dead.

And most importantly, dismantling an opponent is not only acceptable, it's now expected.

Michigan had PP1 out with an eight-goal lead in the third. Berry puts out the fourth line for a PP with a three goal lead in the third. Frankly, ... no, no longer acceptable.

Mercy died this weekend. The mindset going forward must be kill shot, then as many as you can hang on the board.

When the team wins by 7, the question must be: why not 8 or 10.

    Can Berry coach that?
Does he have the stones to do that?
If he's too nice for that I can find someone who'll play by the new rules. (Same for Schweigert.)

    So can Berry do it?
He'd better; I know at least four coaches that'd do it to him in a heartbeat after this NCAA opening round.

New Rules, and they don't include "managing" leads or mercy.

When did we have a three goal lead? :)

Once the team switched to their defensive mindset, he became a beast, IMO. He didn't pot a lot of goals down the stretch, but had some big ones. He played a man's game - net front greasy stuff, killer forecheck, massive PK, etc. I personally see Juddy with a top six MUCH, MUCH more than I saw Hain and Sendo down the stretch.

Back to everyone's favorite "getter, setter, netter" convo, I think he provides him some versatility. I think he could play the getter role with OMac/Perron (setter) and Blake/Gaber (netter) big time. He could also form a shut down group with guys like Strinden, Portz, Kunz, Albrecht (if he stays).

His vision is iffy. He’s doesn’t play the same game.

    Yeah.

Eastern hockey was hurt by total shutdown of seasons in 2020-2021, and they are still recovering.

NCHC?  Well after winning 5 of the last 6, we're due for an off year.   (Now watch St Cloud pull the unexpected.)  Duluth was certainly down, and our out of conference record wasn't as good as we've been accustomed to (so it was more than just UND and Duluth in an off year).

I'm optimistic about the NCHC future, especially with CC getting stronger and Omaha improving too.

Hopefully I’m wrong, but with the injuries scsu has I would be shocked if they kept it within 2-3. Gophs are going to be way too much.

No denying the goofs are a good team,  probably deserve to win the natty.  But the team thar deserves it doesn't always win.

Boy are they fun to watch…through and through an absolute wagon. To think they lost Broz and both Lucius bros. Recruiting is a layup with all the high end talent coming out of MN lately

Expected Roster as of 3/23/23 -

    Going by a somewhat typical 26-man roster (15 F / 8 D / 3 G):

    Forwards (13)
    Fr - Emerson / Perron
    So - Blake / James / McLaughlin / Strinden / Montgomery (RS)
    Jr - Schmaltz / Portz / Kunz
    Sr - Gaber / Jamernik / Ness

    Defense (6)
    Fr - Benoit / Komzak / Wiebe / Livanavage / Strathmann
    Sr - Moore

    Goalies (2)
    Fr - Hedquist
    So - Johnson

    Undetermined
    Decision from Caulfield / Albrecht

    Portal and/or Recruit
F - Could need 1-2 depending on what Caulfield & Albrecht do
    D - Need two
    G - Need one

Great write up…makes me ever more worried about next year :)

Besides the obvious needs…another glaring hole is the lack of upperclassman punch. Besides gaber there’s nothing. Team will be thin next year. There’s will definitely be minutes up for grabs.

Exactly - like the scouting report on Bast in that first season or two in the BCHL, dynamic offense and skating from an undersized young D. Then he went to the USHL and the offense was gone.

Right….ushl is significantly tougher league. But for some it doesn’t matter (I.e. Makar)
