Does anyone think there’s a possibility Brent Johnson opts to stick around? I lean towards “no” but he’s a right handed defenseman that would get more playing time than he did last year. Still probably not going to happen but just food for thought that I wanted to throw out there and see what you all thought.

I’ve thought about that a lot. Tons of growth can happen those upperclassman years and I honestly think he’d get a ton of PT and could most likely run our PP. But….No way he comes back :) For how much he sat last year, something happened. I doubt the staff os welcoming him back.

Matt Staudacher, Dman from UMN, entered the portal.
He's a leftie, but he does have two years of eligibility left.

Maybe someone for Berry to check out...although he's a MI native so UM or MSU wouldn't be a surprise destination for him.

Would he make either of those teams?

Does anyone else find it frustrating that there are only TWO freshman forwards they feel are ready to come in? Why is that an issue? Because it looks like they are going to add 3 from the portal. Also sounds like they will end up going 4 Freshman / 4 Portal on defense. 1 Freshman / 1 Portal in Goal. I really like the pipeline they have, but clearly they don't have enough. The University spends more money on their program than any other school in the country. They should not have to rely on the portal like this. Here's to hoping this off-season is just one giant reset from last year's disaster.

I honestly think this is the “reset”. The roster is lopsided from F to D belittled that’s the predicament we’re in. Is that on the coaches…probably but again those guys are great and hopefully work out of it by 24-25. TBH, there’s only 2 freshman F I would bring in, no one else is ready, or of age from my angle. Croal is the closest but he won’t be drafted and allowing him to play another year of juniors, on the PP, etc would pay huge dividends down the road. Plus he’s probably going to be a 4 yr guy. He’s a bit streaky at the moment.

Croal is already scoring at a decent clip for Muskegon, leading their team in overall scoring (though not on a PPG clip) and would be 20 years old by fall.  I don't see a lot of reason to leave him in the USHL another year personally.  I would rather bring in a kid like that than another portal kid.

Leave croal alone…he needs another year :)

He ended the season in the top 9, not out of the question that he could move into the top 6. He’s one I think could have an increased role and play on the power play more.

Yep, really handzy/crafty around the net. Can wire the puck. If he can keep up at this level, he could have really good production. Put up really impressive numbers at shattuck, was one and done in the ushl and was really close to a pt/game.

Do they also understand that recruiting has gone off the rails - and are they taking steps to fix this?  This type of roster management is not seen in any other top program - and if it continues we will not be among the top programs.  Schloss is good at getting early scoops on signees - I wish he would ask a few hard questions about our recruiting.  I don't know what is going on behind the scenes but I can't understand why we can't sell our program to top talent.

Bubs is an awesome guy. The portal is new…I think everyone got a bit greedy last year when they hit the portal so hard. I’ve criticized the roster (mis) mgmt plenty but in no way do I want a new coach. I honestly believe the coaching staff thought they would make a run last year. Tons of players had off years, underclassmen got buried (which I still question), and the dzone/goaltending was just plain odd. But Bubs shouldn’t go anywhere…he needs to get back to our roots and start recruiting hard and developing hockey players. The free agency approach does not work. Build from within. I think he starts that now moving forward. Last years approach clearly backfired and it will most likely cost us next year too.

    Today's portal entrants:
    Michigan F Eric Ciccolini (NYR)
    Michigan F Nick Granowicz
    Michigan D Keaton Pehrson
    BU F Brian Carrabes

Michigan loses three to the portal, including a drafted forward.

That’s because they’re basically done unless they want to be 4th line or in and out of the lineup. Mich is reloading next year.

edit- actually michigans 23-24 incoming class is fairly light by their standards.

Tell me you no nothing about roster construction, style of play, recruiting balance, this kid's game in general without telling me you no nothing about roster construction, style of play, recruiting balance, this kid's game in general.

I mostly agree with you…but the OP does make kind of a funny point. I mean, this is depth beyond depth. He’s basically had one good year. Not against the move…but we should all temper the expectations.

Not that crazy about all the major penalties and game misconducts, though.

Yeah I saw that…good numbers though (including +/-) given he was in the box so much. Will def have to tame it down unless we’re way up (which hasn’t happened all that often lately :) )

  10. Johannes is a fairly solid pickup. Numbers can be deceiving on bad teams but he should be a solid contributor. Big boy, was plus. One year rental but that’s fine, better than bringing in a guy like Croal early. Let’s hope he kind of “figured it out” because he’s really never produced and was in and out of the lineup at a school like AIC. So hopefully last season wasn’t “flash in the pan”. Either way he should add some depth.

So Felicio is in the USHL as a 16-year old. Is it normal for 16-year olds to be in the USHL?

There’s always a handful each year. Two of our commits were 16 when the year started. Felicio turns 17  next month. D is a lot harder though, so playing as a 16 YO is really impressive, to break the pt record is very very impressive.

Brads kid ? Is his future bright ??

He’s really solid, big boy. Obviously has a very knowledgeable source to listen to. I’m guessing he’s taking the slow approach to development which is always the most successful. I would hope he commits to UND. You never know though, sometimes coaches want their kids to “find it” their way. We shall see.

Question for the prospect gurus: Given Jayden Jubenville’s age—turns 20 this summer and is older than several incoming freshmen d-men—is there any chance he comes in this coming fall? Especially if Strathmann waits a year? Or is he maybe a later bloomer who really needs another year of juniors?

    I’ll hang up and listen.

I would have Strathmann above jubenville.

on a separate note, I really hope we’re after will felicio…just broke the ushl record for pts by a 16 yo dman. Was on Boisvert’s MSC team.

Seriously? A Chipotle is the key to hockey success?

They Mayor has NO authority or ability to bring it to GF. This is capitalism. If they want to come they come unless you expect the Mayor to give tax credits that all other restaurants did not get.

Haha I was thinking the same thing. Cooley legitimately has a deal with Chipotle…that’s why the comment was so funny.

Minnesota's recent success has zero to do with the B1G and everything to do with replacing Don Lucia with Bob Motzko. They were stuck in the mud with Lucia for years. Same with Michigan and Red Berenson a few years ago. I really hope that doesn't happen with Berry and UND.

And being loaded with blue chippers is great.....until those NHL suits start waving entry-level contracts in their faces after one or two college seasons and they sign them. A mix of 3-4 year and 1-2 year players is probably the best formula for success. Otherwise, you are starting over every October and you never get to build on what you started. That is what we have to establish in Grand Forks if we are going to get back to winning.

    Agree there
