So there are two sides of the "no nickname" choice. Those that don't want some terrible, generic nickname and those that probably believe the old nickname will or can come back. Either way, what is the harm of having no nickname? Do you honestly think the NCAA will come down on us for not having a nickname? Come on, the damage was already done, they won. They're not coming back. They have bigger things to worry about than some north Dakotans showing up to their sporting events with a Sioux logo on.

since this is a thread for those that want to have ND as an option I find it odd that all of you who want a new, generic nickname feel the need to chime in.

I went to two fb games last season when I was visiting my folks (they are season ticket holders). There were tons of people at both games. That seems like support to me. Maybe it is the rebuilding aspect based on the poor performance of a prior coach. Once they hire a strong coach and good recruiters then they'll be back.

Tom covers FB and other less popular sports. I never realized this but it appears the other programs are a tad salty at the success of the hockey program (and the coverage it receives). Maybe that has something to do with it. Sad though, because we should all be on the same team.

I'm sorry, but hockey is the only reason people know of UND. No one outside of ND really know UND sports. I travel quite a bit. Every once in awhile I get into a convo with someone at a bar and they may ask about north dakota's good D2 football program. I correct them and note that school is in Fargo and that it is D-1AA....and they kind of give me a blank stare.

I have been meaning to post this for awhile however I just thought about it again yesterday. Why do we have to have a nickname? Many say it has something to do with branding and marketability. I live in the twin cities and am involved in hockey here, so am at the rinks quite bit. When I look around at the kids I tend to notice a ton of UND hats, shirts, etc. Some have the Sioux logos but many of these youngsters have the new logo. Actually, if I would rank the team support I see from many of the kids in this area it is probably the Wild, Gophers, and UND (in that order). I notice UND apparel so much here, in every sporting goods store. I honestly don't think marketability would be an issue whatsoever. The hockey program alone keeps that strong.

wtf? That definitely matters. They better figure this all out before a vote. Otherwise we'll have Fighting Hawks as a name. If stars goes the public vote for RR goes way up.

Agreed and I could definitely live with RR if chosen. Actually all this PC related talk about RR is kind of annoying and makes me like RR even more. However, of the remaining names it is still #2 on my list.

There is a reason we don't know that answer, because Kelley doesn't want to know it. He wants a new nickname.

Good post. The only names I can honestly live with are North Stars, RR, and Fighting Hawks. In saying that a truly hope fighting hawks doesn't make it as it is too generic for our school. Pretty much, I have a top two. I did sign the petition. However I don't think that will ever materialize. I'm open minded I guess ?
