  1. The question was asked in the Herald live chat yesterday, and according to either Wayne Nelson or Tom Miller (can't remember which one), it didn't sound likely that this game will be replaced for one with an FCS opponent.

This game should never have been on the 2012 schedule. Probably too late to find a replacement. Of course we did get the Portland State last minute...so maybe we can reel in another FCS team. I just hope Faison is trying to find a replacement, becasue if he isn't even trying, that would be really unfortunate.

  2. Do you understand what HD costs? For UND or WDAZ to provide the hockey games in HD, it would cost over 1 million dollars, that is just to get the truck with everything in it. It would take years for that truck to get paid off. When UND moves into this new conference, you can kiss WDAZ/Midco Sports net (who produce crappy sporting events anyway) goodbye, as they will not be in line to carry NCHC hockey. My guess is that FSN would make a real hard pitch as they will have Fox Sports channels in each area of the conference.

Games in HD, no more Pat Sweeny calling games, and a penalty time clock.....this is starting to sound pretty good!!!

  3. In everyones opinion what is bigger:

    1. Winning the GWC

    OR

    2. Beating NDSU

Without a doubt beating NDSU. I would rather beat our instate rival than win a league with bad teams in it that we aren't even going to be playing in next year.

  4. I don't think anyone can deny that the talent we are putting on the field is getting better and better every year. The cupboard was left pretty bare. It takes some time to rebuild the talent level to compete. Last year, we didn't have it. This year it was much better and we had a lot of youth that had to contribute. Yes, we were inconsistent but that can be blamed on lack of experience as much as on the head coach. All of this is new to Mussman as a head coach as well. When he took the team over, I feel he had to coach to keep games close as the overall talent wasn't there. Now that he is getting the talent, he needs to develop and coach to win. I think we saw him do that towards the end of the year as he gained confidence along with the team. You can look at last year and next year but I judge him on this year and I don't think anyone saw this team finishing 8-3 especially with the injuries the team had. Give the guy a little credit at least.

I do give him credit for coaching our young guys up especially when we had injuries where those younger guys had to come in and play more. He did a great job keeping the team focused in all those games where we had to come from behind in the second half. He did a good job coaching this year. But is it going to be good enough to compete with the big boys in the Big Sky? Yes we won the Great West. But the Great West conference doesn't really have any great teams. The level of competition next year conpared to the last 2 years is going to be obviosuly better next year. We will have to wait and see how Muss and this team does against good football teams, not just cupcakes.

  5. I am a Sioux football fan just like mostly everyone that posts on this site. But you have to look at all the games we played and really evaluate how the team looked. Sure we were 8-3. That is a respectable record. But we were a last second field goal against an NAIA/D2 team, a 45 yard field goal late in the 4th quarter against a winless No Colorado team, and a miraculous 3 TD 4th quarter comeback from being 5-6. Now I realize that we were good enough and our team played well enough to get us into the position to win those games, but if you really look at this season can you really say that you can brag about this season? There is much more to look at when evaluating a team then just wins and loses. I agree we are moving in the right direction and I would much rather be 8-3 going into the Big Sky that 3-8. But unless we inprove our play, next year is going to be more like 2010 than 2011.

  6. As much as I want to give Muss and the team a ton of credit, lets put things in perspective. Yes they did go 8-3 after a season where they were 3-8. But, lets look at those 8 wins. 3 of them were against NAIA or D2 teams, and the other one is against a D1 non-scholarship team. So really, they had 4 legitimate wins against D1 FCS teams. Last year they had 3 wins, one of them against a D2 team. So looking at the numbers, in the past two years, UND and coach Mussman have won 6 games in two hears that are legit. Not really that impressive. I do think they are moving in the right direction, but they have a long way to go to be considered a contender in FCS.

  7. You guys, that was the irony in my post. UND has never been credited with a better recruiting class, no matter how often they beat ndsu. :silly:

So if NDSU had a better recruiting class, wouldn't they have better players, and a better team, and better success against a team that apparently doesn't recruit as well as them like UND?? Well maybe in your mind they have had better recruiting classes, but the results on the field in 8 of the last 11 meetings prove otherwise!

  8. So if they always out-recruit UND, that means they were out-coached in 10 of the last 13 meetings?

Hiyo!!!! Hmmm, I wonder how he will talk his way out of that box!!! Can't wait to here!!

  9. The Montana game reminded me a lot of the NDSU/Montana State playoff game, Griz pushed both their lines around all day and McGhee looked rattled. It was a good day to be a Griz fan.

Road is going to be pretty tough for MSU now, if they win their first game they would have to play at Sam Houston State and then probably at Missoula...not quite the #1 schedule they were looking at last week.

NDSU looked to have a pretty decent draw, they should cruise to the semis.

But it is the playoffs and anything can happen. Last year Montana St. was ranked #4 with a first round bye. An 8-4 Bison team rolled into Bozeman and dominated them in a huge upset. That's why they play these games on the field and not on paper!!

  10. Didnt know where to put this.

    http://www.ebay.com/...=item336e06d13a

Anyone remember this jersey? Is it a UND jersey? Didn't know UND ever branded as Nodak.

No way this is a UND jersey. It is green and yellow. No way would a UND team have those colors on any jersey. I doubt it is an NDSU jersey either. Neither school ever ever went by Nodak. Probably some old city league jersey some guy is trying to make money off of pushing it as a former UND jersey. Lame!!

  11. Eastern Washington won the national championship last year and they played a D-II team. Delaware was their opponent in that game and Delaware plays D-II West Chester every year. Montana and Montana State both play a D-II team every year. Southern Illinois has played a D-II or NAIA team eight of the last ten years. Central Arkansas is going to make the playoffs this year and they played a D-II team.

Scheduling a lower division opponent is something that is very common in FCS football, even among the most prominent programs.

I agree that it does happen. But ask Montana how that worked for them last year. They were 7-4. However, one of there wins was against D2 Western State. But, only wins against Division 1 programs count in the eyes of the selection commitee when deternining at large bids for the playoffs. So in the selection commitees eyes they were really only 6-4. NDSU was 7-4 also. They however, did not schedule any games against lower division schools so they had 7 D1 wins. So they make the playoffs over Montana. Had Montana scheduled a cupcake FCS team instead of Western State and won, they would have made the playoffs.

So yes you can make the playoffs in a year where you schedule a lower division school. But the unofficial cutoff for making the playoffs is 7 D1 wins. So yes you can schedule school of mines and beat them. But you better win 7 of your next 10 games to have a chance. All I am saying is I don't want what happened to Montana last year happen to UND.

  12. Faison must have known that 2012 would be our first year of eligibility for the playoffs. He must have known that the selection comittee only counts D1 wins when choosing at large bids for the playoffs. He must have known that scheduling a D2 or NAIA team would affect or chances of making the playoffs in 2012. He must have known that starting 2012 off with an oppponent that would get people excited for a D1 football season where we are playoff eligible was important. He must have known that there are 126 FCS Schools that he could have scheduled instead of School of Mines. He had to have known all this right?? I mean I knew all of this and I am just an average Joe Sioux football fan. Faison is the head of the University of North Dakota Athletic Department. It is his job to know all these things right?

So Faison either didn't realize all this or he did realize it and did nothing. Either way, he made a huge mistake and his judgement and ability to run this Athletic Department should be in question. His scheduling during the past 5 years of transition is an absolute joke. I just hope there are people in his department that are telling him this so he can make things right.

  13. You mean schedule like NDSU does.

Yes. 4 home conference games, 4 away conference games, 2 OOC games against FCS teams (preferably at home), and an away game at an FBS school that we will get big revenue from. That should be our formula for scheduling every year.

  14. I don't care who they schedule, as long as they are an FCS team. There are plenty of low quality FCS teams that we could schedule here if we are looking for a cupcake win. (St. Francis, Morgan St., etc) Get your cupcake D1 wins in at leat one of you OAC home game so you don't get screwed when the playoff selection commitee makes their decision for whether or not you make the playoffs. NAIA and D2 schools cannont be scheduled anymore now that we are out of transition an playoff eligible.

  15. So now we can't even talk about preseason polls? :silly: Wow.

Look at the original poll that darell1976 linked to and commented on. If you really want to comment on that poll and take it as being even close to accurate, by all means go ahead. But you are going to sound like an idiot defending the rankings in it.

  16. I didn't post it to mean UND is better than North Carolina and others...I just put it out there so people can click on it to see how UND does during the season (remember they only count DI games like Sagarin). I also like to see the predictions and see how they go up or down depending how we do the games before. Like the NDSU game they have us winning 75-70, if UND tanks the first part of the season that will change to the worst, if we kick @ss during the first part our margin of victory will be greater.

So why post the rankings?? At this point they mean nothing. And can you really predict a score of a game based on how a team plays other teams throughout the season? I really hope you don't consider this site credibable because it deffinitely is not.

  17. Are you really using this to determine how good our team, let alone any team is? No one has played any games yet. I mean come on. Did you look at where other teams are ranked? UND is ranked 112 and North Carolina is ranked 115!!! This ranking is obviously not updated yet or legit at all.

    Come on man!!!

  18. D1 schools losing to D2 schools in basketball exhibitions every year, at the low-major, mid-major and even high major levels. Guess which school is going to be more excited to play the game and which one it means more to? I guess we will find out more in January when the 2 teams play each other.

Typical response to losing to an inferior opponent. Let me restate that a VERY inferrioir opponent. I guess losing to a d2 school doesn't really mean much to NDSU players, coaches, and their fans. If that is the case, that is pretty pathetic. Just face the facts. They played better and you lost. and maybe you aren't as good as you think they are this year.

I cannot wait till we putt the beatdown on the Herd in January at the Ralph. Don't be suprised if you hear a "Moorhead State" chant a couple times that night!!
