  1. The blue line club has beer - on the lake side of the arena - opposite the main entrance - just outside the gates - anyone can drink there. There is also the curling club in the skyway but you'll need to pay to get in there. Bulldog club and suite ticket holders have their own respective bars in the arena in a corner closest to the lake. Regular peons in the main bowl have to flask it.

Enjoy the games - hope you like the arena - the upper deck is the place to be for great sightlines. Same degree of incline as the old DECC. Not nearly the atmosphere of the old DECC... much like when you guys moved from your old barn, and no amount of complaining will bring the noise/crowd/edge back because we now live in the corpy world, with commercials, advertisements on the jumbotron, and canned music. But it is much more comfortable without ceiling tiles falling, toilets overflowing, sticking to the chairs and floor, etc. so I guess that's a plus.

I'm guessing it'll be like a Sioux home game in there - you always bring a huge contingent and it sounds no different this year. Hope you enjoy the bloodbath.

I will always remember the old DECC. It was my first ever road hockey game. Great atmosphere!! The seats are right on top of the action!! I will always remember DHG and the rest of the students running around the concourse after UMD scored and then doing the same with my buddies one game and our Sioux flag when we scored!!! I remember tieing the game and running around the arena and being tripped by an old lady, and then less than a minute later we took the lead and we went straight towards the student section to run the flag around again. Security busted that up. Don't think they allowed flags after that year!! I am looking forward to seeing Amsoil up close. Hope to see tons of Sioux fans there!! I wouldn't expect anything less!!

  2. I'm glad you like Duluth! That is true a hatred for the gophs in hockey is something we have in common. Where do you usually go in canal park? Maybe see ya around town! I'll bring J.T. He's old enough now hehe:)

We have usually on to Grandma's sports bar after. seems to be the place to go since it is pretty big! Old Chicago is also a good place. Just trying to figure out what to do with one of the guys that I am going with. Anything good going on this weekend anywhere...live bands or anything?

  3. Duluth is my favorite road trip in the WCHA. Going out before and after the games in Canal Park is great!! I love how the arena is right downtown. The people are always great there. We usually get along becausw we have one thing in common...our hatred towards the Gophers!!! I am heading there this year again for probably my 6th roadtrip there in the last 10-12 years. Gonna be great!! should be some great games!!

  4. Hopefully the students will show because it's on a Thursday night, instead of going home to mama and papa on the weekend-- at least they might stay for the first half. ???

I hope the students realize what is happening. They have already been moved down a section. If they don't start showing up, they are going to sloly but surely move to the ends of the Alerus like where they put the NDSU students in the Fargodome!!

  5. First football home game of the year with halfway decent weather and you'll have people turning out to watch whoever and to tailgate. Doesn't really matter if it's that good of a game. You think a large number of fans show up because they want to see a good game or decent competition? A lot of casual fans will show up for the gameday experience, and the first game of the year offers that, as does the Potato Bowl, which is why those two games are usually the most heavily attended regardless of competition.

Besides the team we are playing this year, the home opener will be great. New season, the weather will be great, starting a new conference, and everyone will want to check out the new turf!! I think that UND and the Alerus should not publish any pictures of the new turf before the game. It will add that extra hype to the game!! Although I have complained about the SOM game repeatedly, I will diffinitely be there!!

  6. Everybody calm down!! Seriously!! There is a lot of time before the FCS contract expires. A lot can happen in a week let alone 18 months. Step away from the ledge, take a deep breath. It's gonna be OK.

  7. We have traditionally played well in Duluth. I think we have 1 loss in Duluth in the last 10 years. Hopefully that trend can continue. Headed there myself with some friends. Excited to check out Amsoil and gettting 4 points!! Always alot of Sioux fans that make the trip. I expect the same in 2 weeks!! "Engelstad East" will be rockin!!!

  8. Did the students get a section taken away or did they just shift the 3 sections? I think I would prefer them having one fewer section. That way, if student attendance numbers don't go up, the sections will at least look to be more full.

The student sections got shifted down a section and the season ticket holders in 212 got moved to 215. The rest of 215 is up for grabs for anyone!

  9. I didn't say right now spaz. Look at the process that Boise did apply it to UND. Yes, Really. It was people like you who gave them no chance in those games. Fool you twice shame on.....?

Since it "worked" for Boise state, how come other FCS schools aren't making the jump? Montana, Appalacian State, Northern Iowa...if it was so easy and such a great idea, those schools would have made the jump years ago. I think its ok to think big for this program, but looking at the FBS is not the right option.

As a fan, do you want to see your team compete for a National Championship, or not. UND can do that in the FCS. No chance in FBS. Boise State went FBS and beat some very good teams. Even went undefeated a couple of those years. But guess what, didn't win a Championship. Sure they have a Fiesta Bowl championship, but I would much rather win the National Championship than any FBS bowl championship. Anyday.

  10. Boise State did it. Beat Alabama, beat Oklahoma. Short sighted people like yourself will always doubt visionary statements play it safe and watch the risk takers do great things.

UND could beat Alabama or Oklahoma. Is this what you are saying? Do you believe this? Really? Pretty sure 99.9% of people anywhere would agree with me. Maybe we are all short sighted!!

  11. I agree. Would be great to compete for FCS year in and out. I just wonder what they would do if FBS did a legit playoff.

UND would never make any playoff. The best the FBS can hope for in regards to a plyoff is an 8 team playoff. No chance UND will make that. Absolutely none.

  12. I believe that eventually, and sooner than later, the FBS will go to a limited playoff and then expand it over the years. Where does that put the FCS? Just another I-AA designation, that's where.

Personally, I would love to compete for a National Championship every year in football. There is ZERO chance of doing that at the FBS level. Instead of trying to be a small fish in a big pond, UND needs to focus on being the best FCS program in the country. Dreams of playing in the FBS get in the way of that goal.

  13. The original renderings looked like this:

    http://postimage.org/image/4m5ebg7hz/

You are looking southwest from the roof of the "Nut Lab".

The near building is the Indoor Training Facility that they are close to breaking ground on.

West of that, on the site of old Memorial is a north-south running FB field with a retractable roof (shown open in image).

North of both buildings is a soccer field (that is today a parking lot). On the west end of the soccer field is a parking ramp. That ramp isn't built yet as that'd be in the east side of Columbia Road. However, beyond that ramp to the west is the ramp they have built on the west side of Columbia Road.

And before you say all this is pie in the sky (OK, it is), why'd they build a bridge over Columbia Road from the current "west" ramp to an empty parking lot? They had to build a tower (with elevator) on the east side of Columbia for the east end of the bridge. You're telling me that will forever be "a bridge to nowhere"? I'd bet against.

Pretty sure that had more to do with building a new parking ramp east of Columbia. Do you honestly think that UND is going to build a 25000 seat retractable roof stadium? Honestly, is this what you really believe?

  14. Sorry brother, I refuse to think small. If we're going to do it, let's do it right the first time around and do it big. Let's construct a facility we can build a program and a tradition around! I'm aware of past attendance records and could absolutely care less about what UND did back in the D2 and D1 transition days, the future is looking bright and it's going to take students, alumni, and fans with the right attitude to help make it happen (a winning team doesn't hurt either). I refuse to accept that UND will be a lack luster team that 10,000 or more people in the region support, I honestly believe in the potential of this institution and know that great things are in the pipeline!

Nothing wrong with dreaming big, but you have to be realistic. While I agree that this program can grow and attract many more fans, the chance of UND going to the FBS and building a new 25000 seat stadium is very unlikely. I think a more realistic goal would be to build the indoor practice facility and rebuild memorial stadium to hold 15000-18000 people all while competing at the FCS level. While dreaming of playing in the FBS is bold, it is just not pratical.

You be positive, I'll be realistic. Maybe we can meet somewhere in the middle.

  15. People are talking 25k to 30k stadium because they're thinking of the 15k average attendance requirement for an FCS team to move to FBS. Make sense now? ;)

    Six home games, say:

G1: 28k <-- you need room for that one

    G2: 20k

    G3: 11k

    G4: 11k

    G5: 10k

    G6: 10k

    Average: 15k

UND moving to FBS?? Are you serious? You can't be honestly saying that with a straight face can you? 15000 average attendance? When was the last time we averaged 10000 in a season? Do you really think we can compete with FBS teams? We can barely beat NAIA teams right now!! We have tough enough games with FCS teams, not sure how we can compete at the FBS level. Even if we did decide to go FBS, I am sure there would be conferences jumping to add the University of North Dakota. And what is the benifit of playing at the FBS level? So we can have a sub 500 record every year and get blown out in most games!! I can't believe I am having this dicussion. UND playing at the FBS level??? What a rediculous statement!!

  16. I don't think UND is looking for help from Grand Forks to build something like that.

UND would like to be in a facility that they own and would look to their benefactors to make it happen.

(GF taxpayers can now exhale. ;) )

Well wherever the money the comes from, I still don't think UND can justify building a stadium that size. Look at our attendance. Even in the early 2000's we had 11000 people. I get that you are looking big picture. Heck, I would love to see 20,000+ people at a UND football home game. But the reality of that happening anytime soon is not great.

If we want to get this program really going, build the proposed indoor facility. That will get better recruits to come to UND which will produce better teams and hopefully because of that, increase attendance. So like I said. Until the Alerus is selling out every game on a regular basis, the talk for a new stadium seems kind of rediculous. Lets pack out an 11000 seat stadium before we talk about filling a 25000 seat stadium.

  17. I've actually seen conceptual renderings of a horse shoe stadium that would incorporate the existing memorial stadium that seats around 25,000-30,000, but I'm sure that would be more in the $70-$90 million price range. I would love to see an outdoor field but they would have to construct some sort of heating system to keep people coming during winter months.

Are you high?? Building a stadium for 25,000-30-000???!!!! Yeah, thats a great idea if you want to spend 80 million on a stadium that will be half full. Seriously. Fargo would struggle to fill a stadium that size for a game, and they have 3 times the population around Fargo than GF does. UND has acereaged under 9000 for football over the last 4 years. So I highly doubt that UND could convince the city and its taxpayers that a 30000 seat stadium would be justified. especially at that price!! Until the Alerus starts selling out on a regular basis, there is no need for a new stadium of that size.

  18. Don't be afraid to stand up and cheer; it is okay to get other people fired up around you!

Guy behind us always tells us to sit down after we just scored and we have not even kicked the extra poinit yet!! I am not afraid to stand up and cheer. I want others with that mindset around me!!

  19. Just switched my tickets over. Plenty of great seats available in 215. I could basically pick my seats!! Best part is you don't have to be a Champions club member to get these seats. Just 90 dollars per seat for the season!! Great deal. Hopefully we get some loyal, true UND football fans in this section as opposed to the stiffs in 215 I have been sitting with for the last 3 years!!!

  20. Plus it looks terrible on TV when no students are there and that section is close to empty. Good move on UND's part!

If they continue not to show up, move them to the end like they do to NDSU students at the Dome. UND students don't know how good they have it!!
