  1. Big Sky Conference's Weber State put up one hell of a fight. Many chances for Weber State to win. Congrats to them, but James Madison University ultimately wins and moves on, 31-28. Big Sky Conference now officially out of the playoffs.
  2. O'Brien and Poole weren't even on the roster by the start of 2017 and Larson was a true freshman. Man, you have to give your team a better chance than that - no room for error at all and it showed. Pretty sure Bubba and Schmidt are out searching for at least a couple inside linebackers that can improve the run defense and depth. The inside linebacker position was horrid in 2017.
  3. Both the defense and the offense need to improve. Most concerning, the defense took the greatest step backwards from 2016 to 2017 (rushing yards allowed per game: 91.3 ypg in 2016; 187.9 ypg in 2017). Considering the head coach's background and/or forte, the defense should never regress like that.
  4. The defense was definitely the weakest link. It was concerning, though, how the offense couldn't pick up the slack; that unit did not suffer many injuries (at least relative to the defense). Furthermore, the weakest areas of the defense in 2017, corner and inside linebacker, were supposedly coached by the two "leaders" of the program, Schmidt and Bubba, respectively. That is troubling. The defense gave up over twice as many rushing yards in 2017 (187.9 ypg) compared to 2016 (91.3 ypg). That independently determined the direction of the 2017 season: downhill (as in bad). UND even gave up far less rushing yards in 2014, Bubba's first season as UND head coach (with Mussman's "train wreck" players). I know, injuries. Let's hope the defense gets back to its 2014-2016 form in 2018; that will make a huge difference.
  5. And with that random thought comes news: Bob Nielson has been offered an FBS head coaching position at Kent State. But hey, some people on this board had better alternative facts than me. Good for you people.
  6. UND has to surpass; only reasonable option. NDSU has built up their program within the FCS to where they just aren't going to lose more than a game or two often. They definitely aren't going to be going 3-8 with a few injuries anytime soon. From that perspective, UND Fighting Hawks Football has to improve.
  7. Hell, if Minot State or the University of Mary announced players were leaving, I think UND should consider recruiting them ... Of course I'm exaggerating but I honestly think all FBS dropdowns that play QB, OL, LB, or DB should be considered by UND (especially those with good character from Big 10 schools). UND desperately needs talent at those four position groups.
  8. I agree. UND needs to do very well at recruiting in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in order to be a championship level program. They just won't be able to recruit enough annual talent completely avoiding that. *Unfortunately, after the Big 10 schools, NDSU is almost always next in line for those local kids. UND wins 1/10 (10%) of those battles, if that* Bubba and his staff need to stop hoping for local miracles (recruiting kids with no DI offers) and start winning over talent that is highly touted. Of course, they may also need *some* talent out of the area due to NDSU's overwhelming presence, but lately they haven't shown the ability to really even do that. The 2017 season really brought forward the recruiting concerns for me. The backups (mostly freshmen) that played may not be instant all-americans or even all-conference types, but they should at least show flashes (AT THE VERY LEAST). Many did not even show that. Bubba and his staff need some recruiting hits (success stories) for 2018 or else UND needs a new staff if not simply for just more competent recruiting.
  9. I completely agree with this. The MVFC move was a tremendous move for UND. Congrats to Kennedy and Bubba (and whoever else) for making that happen.
  10. "Borderline" or almost doesn't cut it. UND wasn't in the playoffs in 2015 and they choked (at home) under the pressure in the 2016 playoffs. I am concerned with the leadership. We all recently saw what happened in 2017.
  11. I stated facts. People can do (or comment) with them as they wish.
  12. Correct, next year (2018) will determine if 2016 or 2017 was more in line with what UND football is currently capable of.
  13. This really summarizes my recent posts nicely. This Saturday, 3 of the 4 DI Dakota schools will be playing a playoff football game. Guess which school isn't participating? But yet, UND is right where we want them - no changes. Let's just give them time and hope for better luck. There is pathological perception within the UND fan base.
  14. UND and USD started the DI transition the same time. They were both in the Great West. They both became playoff eligible the same time. They both moved to their current conferences at the same time (MVFC -SD, BSC - UND). I don't know what kind of special treatment you expect for UND relative to USD, but it's not going to happen unless you want to maintain simple "homer" status. I understand you are indeed @homer now at least.
  15. Facts? How about 0 wins in the playoffs after 4 seasons. Again, facts. Also, I think 1 playoff win in 2 seasons is also a fact. You may want to look up the definition of "fact".
  16. I figured someone would take the bait. How many regional rivals did UND beat by multiple scores in 2016, for example, let's say, 45 to 7? I recall UND barely squeaking by USD at the Alerus Center in a game they trailed the majority of the time. Also, UND was at home whereas USD was on the road. So, which game was *actually* tougher? So much for homefield advantage. Folks want to say that 2017 is an anomaly year, but what if 2016 was actually the anomaly? No Montana or EWU ... We'll see.
  17. Random thought: USD's Bob Nielson (Bubba's former boss) has been at USD half the time that Bubba has been at UND (2 years vs 4 years) and Nielson already has more playoff wins. Additionally, he's 1-1 against UND with the more impressive victory.
  18. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Hauck (asshole Ag school trolls have already struck this page you may notice) He did well at Montana from 2003 - 2009 (80-17). He did very poor at UNLV from 2010 - 2014 (15-49). We'll see how round 2 goes at Montana. More than enough resources available to excel. It sounds like a few boosters made this move happen, like the Mussman to Schweigert move of 2013 for UND. Hauck and the Montana Grizzlies will be in Grand Forks to play Bubba and the UND Fighting Hawks on October 13, 2018.
  19. You know, you're actually on to something here ...
  20. I hope so. 2015 and most recently 2017 suggests otherwise. UND needs better players and schematics. Players win the games, but coaches can lose them. Not just culture and good luck (injuries) in my opinion, although those things are needed too. Example: if you take all the average (non top contributors) players off of the undefeated 2017 high school teams of North Dakota (good culture/winning tradition) and form a college team with them (and none get injured), they still won't win more than a game or two vs Big Sky competition. Example could be better, but my point is you simply need "good" players before everything else can "sprinkled on".
  21. That's a bit much @MafiaMan UND is not in a different division/classification or level of Conference (P5 vs others), despite what the NDSU propaganda may suggest. Don't fall for that trap. UND and NDSU will in fact be in the *same* conference soon. I like the Auburn vs. Alabama comparisons. NDSU will be getting the "better" recruits for the foreseeable future, so it's up to UND to use all available pipelines (local and distant high school, FBS dropdowns, JuCo players) to get capable players and then use them with innovative schemes to ultimately outscore the opposition. Its quite obvious the current UND level of recruit WITH the UND scheme of 2017 is not a winning combination.
  22. Make it about 3 or so student-athletes at that position would be huge ... 1 would be, let's say, only a start ...
  23. If the culture has changed as much as some imply, that may actually justify change more so than the pathetic on-the-field results.
  24. South Dakota killed UND and Bubba period. Talk about reminding Bubba that's your old boss over there ...
  25. Alabama has several injuries and now has *a single loss* ... well, this scenario certainly now justifies UND's implosion of 2017. I completely get it now.
