Bo Pelini did fine, but he was a hot head and the boosters fired him without thinking it through. It’s been downhill since Pelini. As for UND-Nebraska, UND has a chance if they play well. On the other hand, it will be a must win for Scott Frost and I don’t have faith that Bubba can prepare his team to perform well in front of 90,000 fans… I suspect the team to be awestruck and play sloppy.
-
Or the Hawk collective? I’m over conflict, rather let’s promote growth.
-
Huge opportunity for Waletzko here. Needs to grab it and run with it.
-
Would definitely suck if he goes elsewhere. UND needs a high-end QB recruit in the worst way
-
Good ol’ trigonometry and kinematics … velocity is average at best for Schuster and thus the arc of the ball is higher to compensate, but you’re right, it definitely gets there. I’m not arguing this point nor interested in doing that. Accuracy and decision making more important for a QB. But arm strength and athleticism are nice bonuses. Curious to see what Freund’s 2022 offense has evolved into. The 2021 version wasn’t nearly good enough.
-
That much is obvious.
-
He’s accurate and makes good decisions; two most important attributes for a QB. That with playing time is why he has racked up yards. He just doesn’t have the strongest arm nor is he a big physical, fast athlete - those are the deficiencies that some grasp onto. It should be fine to point them out, but, again, the two most important attributes Schuster has. That’s a good thing. With all that said, this 2-QB system should be under the microscope a bit more. Perhaps it is just Freund overthinking it, since everyone appears convinced Schuster is a top QB, but UND needs to hand this system to the top guy and let him grow with it.
-
It’s not a secret everyone is hitching this season to the ability of Tommy Schuster. Makes people sensitive around here. Bit goofy to be honest. But sure, the offensive line, running back, receivers, corners, linebackers, safeties all are important to the success moving forward as well. Let’s see how the team puts it together.
-
Okay, well why would Schuster leave the field then so often? That’s the question posed. Freund is a nice guy, trying to get too many of his QBs on the field. I agree that it should be a 1-QB system, that much is clear. I’ve already said numerous times that Schuster on the field allows for more of the playbook than when Vaughn is out there. The key here is that Freund felt compelled to still play Vaughn. Is it because Vaughn was so talented he needed to see the field, were certain promises made, or was Freund just honestly convinced a 2-QB system would be the best way to run the offense? Don’t get me wrong, UND needs to find a single QB to run the offense. Schuster is the rightful front runner. The more a 2-QB system is run in 2022, the more mistakes there will be to be made. Hopefully Schuster grabs it and runs with it and Freund allows him to do that. If Vaughn improves and grabs the spot, that would be fine as well. Just need someone to surface.

Interesting point. But if Tommy could perform well at the QB position, there would not be another QB out there to critique in the first place … Tommy’s liabilities (or at least his former liabilities, who knows if he’s improved on them for this season) are the reason a different QB goes out there on 3rd/4th and short in the first place.
-
The “hating” correlates with Tommy’s play. There won’t be hating if he improves. If he plays like he did in 2021, there will be plenty of hating to go around.
-
Bad QB and good OL or good QB and bad OL …. both are not ideal. Can we at least all agree on that?
-
Exception, not the rule. There’s been 56 Super Bowls, you mentioned 3 guys … C’mon, you the know the rules!

Happening all around us (UND). This is definitely something UND and the Grand Forks community can form.
-
If we (supporters) want UND to ascend, let’s be honest; let’s bolster the quarterback position.
-
And that is totally fine. There are several examples out there as a basis, and they are separate from the Universities’ alumni foundations.
-
Yeah wait and see aka wait until we’re behind the 8 ball and forced to do it.
-
For me it’s simple: based on the resources UND has (budget, facilities, etc), and also the narrative that they are committed to being a top FCS school like NDSU and SDSU, UND should be looking at going 8-3 with this schedule, with likely losses @Nebraska and @NDSU, and perhaps a random thrown-in loss (SDSU)? The schools that otherwise are on the schedule should be wins based on their resources. The hesitancy on predicting that record for most may not seem obvious, but it should be: under the current leadership structure for UND football, amateur decisions are made too frequently to be a champion. The program went 5-6 in 2021 and 3-8 in 2017. Both seasons hurt progress immensely. This program can’t get out of its own way. Fortunately, the guy who makes the football decisions is also a very nice guy so he’s bought himself a decade plus despite being a mediocre football coach. Perhaps a unpopular take, but the truth. UND football won’t be a FCS championship contender until new leadership comes around. Maybe that will be a batch of assistant coaches who “get it” and not necessarily a complete overhaul, but who knows? After awhile, you are what you are. As has been discussed ad nauseam, at this juncture all teams are undefeated! So as for Teeder, it’s fine to have the “homer” juices flowing and plan for a great season! But after a few weeks of actual football, reality will hit.

Yeah, the institutions need to play a role with NIL, it just so happens it might be unwritten. Grand Forks is a perfect community for NIL and recruiting college football players. For example, Lincoln and UNL Cornhusker FB program have a great partnership for NIL. Rydell's, Altru, etc. all great possibilities to help *legally* recruit top football student-athletes to Grand Forks via NIL. The details are bit unclear right now from my perspective, but if there’s a will, there’s certainly a way with this.

This comment likely won’t age well …

This whole conspiracy of “QBs don’t run because they don’t have a backup” is hilarious. I can’t believe it has caught any steam around here. It doesn’t really exist- the players are who they are in live action. Perhaps the called (designed) QB runs aren’t called, but a QB who runs will still run if given the chance. I’ll leave it at that. With that said, I completely agree the recruiting behind Studsrud was atrocious
-
Sort of a pointless argument, but Studsrud still completed around 60% of his passes. Also, Studsrud was a far better athlete and was a good runner. With that said, he definitely missed some throws and was far from perfect. I think it is a very big deal that Studsrud was only coached by the incompetent Rudolph, who I think was way behind the times of coaching college QBs and offenses. Danny Freund would have made Studsrud a much, much better player. The offense, reads, and throws that Rudolph had Studsrud make were archaic and embarrassing compared to what other offenses around college football were doing from ‘14-‘17.
