    During a recent podcast, Schloss was reminiscing on old WCHA battles between UND and Mankato and reminded the listener of the 2008 series when a Maverick player not only scored a natural hat trick against UND, but all 3 goals were shorties! I don’t remember this happening but perhaps I wanted to forget it at the time. Lol

    https://www.grandforksherald.com/podcasts/und-hockey-podcast Boy, Schloss, Eli, and Jason sure are bullish on Britt, Pike, and Albrecht. Apparently, due to injuries to Zmolek and Pherson, Britt logged over 27 minutes of ice time, most of it five on five.

    Dang it! Here I just stumbled upon it by accident a week or two ago and I was thinking, “Oh wow, a new feature!” -I’m proof that even a blind squirrel catches a nut once in a while.

    I loved Schmaltz’s stick pop on Snuggerud in the waning seconds to prevent him from getting off a shot from close range. Such a heads up D zone play by Schmaltz.

    There was one power play in the third period for UND that comes to mind where they did all the right things but score. I recall Berg camped out in front of Close and getting a couple nice looks where Close just stoned us.

    Someone on GPL is saying both the NCHC director of officials as well as two of the on ice officials are UND alums (insinuating home cooking). Can anyone verify the validity of that claim?

    Putting the wrong Gopher player in the penalty box twice has been a bee in Gopher fans’ bonnets over there on GPL. Can’t say I blame them either. Makes the officials look even more incompetent.

    Trolling GPL, Gopher fans have pegged Blake as the next Robbie Earl. Lots of comments about how he takes dives and how that won’t work at the NHL level. Fun reading.

    Clearly this fan didn’t bother to check and see that Justin Close is 2 months older than Hunter Johannes. Both are 25 years old.

    Any chatter from Gopher fans about the officiating last night? I think we had 6 power plays to their 2. Lots of tripping calls made. I do know the Gophers got away with a hook on Blake during a second period UND power play that would’ve given us a 5 on 3. It was so obvious too and right in front of the ref. Stick up high around Blake’s neck area as he was marching toward the net with the puck.

    To your fourth point about defensive commitment and sticks in lanes, was that Schmaltz who got a critical poke check on a Gopher player in the dying seconds of last night’s game that prevented them from getting a grade A shot off? Whoever it was, it was a huge defensive play!

    Agreed. Alex reminded the viewer this weekend about how UND was only 70 seconds away from sweeping the Gophers last year but if we’re being honest with ourselves, Minnesota dominated play for much of that weekend. If not for cashing in on timely power plays and DeRitter saving our bacon, things probably would’ve been different. This year’s UND team looks faster, deeper offensively and much more responsible defednzively.

    One that isn’t so memorable in the sense that UND was the primary focus but circa 1995/1996 season, I was attending a CC game at the Air Force Academy Cadet Ice Arena (CC’s temporary home while they were building World Arena), the Tigers were chasing the McNaughton Cup with the Gophers neck and neck down the home stretch. During the CC game, the PA guy kept the Tigers fans up to date with scores from the Sioux/Gophers game. Every time it was announced that UND was winning, there’d be a huge roar from the CC fans. Upon the final update that UND had won, the crowd went absolutely nuts in delight. As a UND fan, I felt proud to at least experience a vary rare occurrence of a non-North Dakota fan base cheering on the Sioux so loudly (for selfish reasons, of course). Fun memory though nonetheless to see UND do their part in helping some other team win the conference championship at the expense of the Gophers winning it.

    Yah man, easy for me to say sitting back in the comfort of my living room but just such an unnecessary penalty that could’ve cost us. Hopefully we will keep our emotions in check this weekend and minimize the penalties.

    Are you talking about that two handed pop to the back of the Badgers player near the boards behind our own net? (At least that’s my recollection of the play). If so yes, such an unnessary penalty. Just get your body on the guy, tie him up along the boards with the puck to help chew up precious clock time.

    I love his moxie and confidence! Loved his response to the question about who the fastest player on the team is and he said he is but that if you asked all 27 players, they’d say the same thing and how important it is to believe in yourself. He doesn’t strike me as a hockey player who gives the typical, cliched responses to questions from the media. Also loved his personal heart felt responses about dedicating those goals to his “old ma” and grand parents. Someone on this board mentioned Cole Smith as someone who comes to mind when comparing to Johannes. Such a spot on comparison!

    I heard Wisconsin hit three or four posts last night. Hard to say how the rest of the game would’ve transpired had a couple or all of them had gone in. I’m sure Berry’s game plan would’ve adjusted accordingly.

    Grand Forks native and freshman Drew Montgomery named the game’s number one star tonight with 2 goals and an assist in his first collegiate hockey game for the Tigers. Not a bad way to start.
