  1. I think we should be more sensitive to this issue. I mean, the ALaskan Nanooks no longer have to chare the honor with the BC Nanooks, the Yukon Nanooks, or even the Northwest Territories Nanooks now. Of course, those tribal leaders are investigating sanctions stating that this discriminates against Nanooks of a different location, but.... Seriously, There's no point in this name change. It would be like renaming UND to the University of North Dakota North Dakota Fighting Sioux. There's already an 'Alaska" in the name. THat area is covered.
  2. Bolded is a GOOD thing.
  3. Wow. That's simply astounding. Too bad for the Trading Post. It's always a tragedy when a historical landmark of any kind is destroyed or severely damaged. (I know this isn't exactly too sensitive of me but..) How come tornadoes always seem to find campgrounds and trailer parks? It's simply ridiculous!
  4. I think you are misunderstanding things. Ryan Bayda was not a member of the Hurricanes (or their minor league affiliate) last season. He was a member of the Manitoba Moose, the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks. Eskimos- Yeah, I did come across as oversensitive.
  5. I think I'll add a disclaimer to my signature stating that, in no way shape or form am I or have I claimed to be, an expert in any facet of anything because it seems that lately my opinions have been misinterpretted as my claiming to be an expert in whatever it is. If you want expert opinions, go to PCM or someone else. They're the ones who are better connected. I'm only here to express my opinions. Sheesh. DISCLAIMER NOTE: No, I don't know how to do that quote breakdown thing that Clayton used in his last post. I apologize ahead of time before you all roast me because I don't know how to do it. How many head coaches do we need? Three, I believe though I am not sure if that number is required or if the team could get by with just 2 coaches. Last I checked their full position titles are "Head Coach," "Associate Head Coach," and "Assistant Head Coach." I'm pretty sure I'm correct in this. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. Yes, I heard the one about "assume." I just didn't think we were looking for an associate head coach. Re: Steve Johnson - Ok, so he'll take a pay cut. I stand corrected. Re: Bombardir - That's too bad. I still think he could play hockey. Maybe he will apply. I don't know. I didn't think of him as a prime candidate next to Koberinski, (now again) Johnson, or Litke. As for Hrkac and Patrick, yes, according to me. Brad Berry went from Associate head coach of the Sioux to Assistant Coach of the AHL Manitoba Moose. Currently, Hrkac has a similar job in the AHL. Apart from alumni pride, what would make Hrkac wish to take the same position with UND? James Patrick has a job waiting for him in the Sabres organization. I used to know what it was, but I have lost the article that mentions the offer he has recieved from the organization. According to ME, I don't think James would consider this job attractive to him. EDIT: I guess I may be wrong about Tony Hrkac. He is technically a coaches' assistant with the AHL Milwaukee Admirals. (Hrkac story) I don't know what this position is, but the article aludes to the fact that Hrkac is a part of a "coaching trifecta" with the Milwaukee organization. Decide for yourself what that means and, if you figure it out, please let me know what it means because I am not sure what the difference is between a coaches' assistant and an assistant coach when it comes to the duties discharged pertaining to the Admirals players. Re non-UND alum: Would you prefer if I used "Splendiferous" or perhaps "Gee golly wonderful" instead? Yes, I think it would be nice to have Hastings on staff. Maybe he would like to come back closer to home. I don't know what his intentions are, whether he wishes to even apply or not. I mention them because of their connection to the USHL, not because of any frothing of the mouth to see them wearing a UND Sioux sweatervest. Re: Koberinski - Excellent! I honestly didn't know anything about him. THank you for filling me in.
  6. "there's nothing spectacular about his game" That part really confuses me when it comes to evaluating defensive defensemen. I thought (maybe incorrectly) that the best defensive defensemen rarely have their names mentioned by broadcasters because they quietly and efficiently do their jobs and their jobs aren't all that glamourous to begin with. What's spectacular about good positioning? good forecheck? even good outlet passing isn't all that spectacular really. Maybe they mean in the checking department, but nowadays some spectacular hits are nothing more than roughing or boarding calls. Ovechkin and Crosby are spectacular. Even goaltenders like Cam Ward and Ryan Miller can qualify in that regard. But defensive defensemen?
  7. You bring up a good point... Are we hiring an assistant head coach or an associate head coach? Brad's departure opens up the associate position, sure, but what does Hakstol plan on doing? As slow as this sounds, I never really put any thought into that. I just assumed Eades would be the associate and we'd hire a new assistant. Either way, I don't think Hrkac or Patrick will apply because they are already in positions (or promised positions) that could very well pay better or are more attractive than this one (as hard as it is to swallow that tidbit). I don't think Steve Johnson would come to UND if it means taking a pay cut. I'd love to have him, but I'm also thinking that he'll not be a candidate in the end. I know I listed him earlier as a coach UND should pursue, and I think UND should pursue him regardless, but the more I think of it, the more the pay issue comes up. O'Connell, Bombardir, and Williamson are still playing hockey. Though this doesn't mean they wouldn't retire on the spot and take the job, I'm saying that this may not be the best three to look to. The more I think of it, the more I like Dane Litke admitting that I know very little about Koberinski. farce is right about being too limited. Although I doubt they'd take the position if offerred, guys like Hartnell and Hastings (both USHL head coaches) and Harrington (DIII St. Johns head coach) would make excellent associate head coaches as well. Again, I doubt they'd apply, but on paper, it would be neat.
  8. I'd think that too, but so far, no dice. Right now, their NHL tandem is pretty set (Gerber and Emery) and their AHL tandem (if they choose to do it that way) is set in Kelly Guard and Jeff Glass. If they choose Guard as the #1 goaltender in Binghampton, then they could send Glass back to the ECHL to be the #1 goaltender down there, leaving the backup AHL and ECHL slots available to whomever (I'd guess the backup ECHL slot would be an ECHL goaltender rather than one assigned to the ECHL by Ottawa, but I'm not in the loop on those things. It is just that that was the case this past season where Billy Thompson and Kelly Guard played at the AHL level and Glass at the ECHL level). We'll have to see. UW has been hit pretty good thus far with defections of recruits, but so far has only lost two players that were already on the team. If they lose Elliot, things could REALLY be different for that team.
  9. Sic- Does this mean I can say I was right?
  10. A few of whom? The four players listed are Bohmbach, who committed to UW, Winnett, who committed to Michigan, Colton Grant, who committed to Major Juniors, and Jordan Schroeder, who committed to the Gophers are the only ones mentioned in the article?
  11. They aren't looking. Billy Thompson is no longer a Senator.
  12. Aw shucks. Waitaminute.... since when do you have "power" and since when was it dually recognized?
  13. As far as guys who have hockey heritage that are up and coming, Salmon Arm just signed a Defenseman named Hank Van Boxmeer who is the son of former NHL player/coach John Van Boxmeer. He's a defenseman with pretty good size (6'2" 196lbs.) and the report states that he holds some offensive ability. Other than that, I know nothing about him. He got signed out of Midget AAA last season. He intrigued me because it's interesting (to me anyways) to see sons of former NHL players or coaches coming up through the ranks. I don't know if Hank's "any good" or whether he is a "blue chip recruit." But if he does well, he may be worth a look.
  14. *grumbles* I basically said the same thing as mikejm without the projections.
  15. Yeah, he is a big goaltender. And Salmon Arm just signed a WHL reject goaltender to back him up who is 6'6" tall. In any case, having a goaltender that tall would be totally against the grain.
  16. That's the same Journal that allegedly stated that Ben has committed to Michigan.
  17. Pony- I don't have an example for women's hockey, but I do have several for men's hockey: DI Hockey- Holy Cross (0 scholarships) defeats UMN (sorry, I don't know how many scholarships WCHA men's teams have... is it the same 18 as women's?). In the NHL- In 1995, the New Jersey Devils ride a star goaltender (and very little else) to a Stanley Cup victory. I'm sure there are countless others. Whenever an ECACHL men's team defeats an HEA, CCHA, or WCHA team it will be a team with 0 schollies beating a team with schollies.
  18. True enough, but some people take things far too seriously around here.
  19. Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing! To be honest, I don't have anything for or against Pomeroy really. If he gets voted out, so be it. I just was under the impression (perhaps now wrongly so) that ND would lose if we went from a senior congressman to a junior congressman.
  20. Uh... what goaltending? Detroit doesn't need a goaltender apparently. They just expect all the opposing teams to just lay down and give them the puck.
  21. Be very careful when you post. Agreeing with me is dangerous to your credibility apparently.
  22. I never said he was a physical defenseman a la Greene. At least, it was my intention to say that he wouldn't be like that...
  23. I thought that was FLorida and the Rangers of NY? EDIT (part 2): Or, if you have enough credentials you can spend the rest of your days in Detroit. Heh, yeah, I've come to grips with the fact that Detroit doesn't know how to develop talent very well (especially at the goaltender position)
  24. Yeah. Drafted by Calgary is the kiss of death to any WCHA recruit seemingly. Then again, it is the Sutters that are running the show there and they are notoriously biased.
