Zero argument that on paper that those two have better classes than UND. But ranking by stars isn't the way to do it. Many of the players they signed didn't get upgrade to 2 or 3 star players until after they committed. Plenty of politics that goes on behind the scenes with how players get to those spots. Overall point still remains that UND needs to continue striving to get better players and start winning more battles for players with multiple offers. That isn't debatable at all.

"Finalists" is a relative term. You burn your candidate pool if you're going to release a bunch of names and people that don't want others (like their current bosses) to know they are out looking at other opportunities. It has nothing to do with UND "protecting" themselves. At least one of the serious candidates that was on Tom's list is in that boat.

Finalist interviews the next few days and presser on Monday? I like your timeline better but unfortunately don't think it will be that quick.

His offenses were not good at Cal. Ranked 45, 92, 86 in the FBS his 3 years there and the bottom of the PAC12. They were the 7th ranked offense the year before he showed up. He's a fine candidate (if he's interested) but saying he's had any sort of sustained success in the decade since he left EWU is just not accurate. He has no ties to UND's recruiting footprint and hasn't coached anywhere even remotely close to this area. Those are big red flags. He wanted to call plays to expand his resume and turned him down.

I guess I thought Schmidt had a pretty good run while with Deboer (34-6 excluding covid). Not a great first, single season at SDSU and I have no clue what the new staff inherited there. But you keep championing for Baldwin when he hasn't done much in last decade and his last 3 college stops and one season in the CFL have been flops?

Hope its moves quick as well. Thinking that plane is tied to a trucking company out of Wisconsin. Doesn't mean it wasn't borrowed/rented but who knows.

Here's where Massey has UND's defense the last fifteen years 2 with Schwenzfeier 3 with Holinka 6 with Schmidt 1 with Kotelnicki 1 with Mannausau 2 with Kelling/Mannausau 2024 - 33 2023 - 26 2022 - 30 2021 - 7 2020 - 10 2019 - 23 2018 - 21 2017 - 48 2016 - 15 2015 - 37 2014 - 52 2013 - 74 2012 - 61 2011 - 23 2010 - 25 2017 was the year the team was ravaged by injuries.

No decision has been made. Guessing some guys won't have their application in until late and want to understand where they might possibly rank before having the chance of their name being put out in public as a finalist. Wonder if there's a possibility of UND ending up with more than one names that's been mentioned with a second person filling a possible coordinator position, depending on who gets the head job and where they need to fill in the staff.
-
Even got a Moorhead kid!!! Hell of a job by the staff. 100% class all the way from every one of them in uncertain times for their future.
-
Was 23 the number that was expected? Meaning, did anyone get cold feet and hold off or go somewhere else (outside of the WR who flipped a few weeks ago)?
-
He's also been the DC for 6 years and the first 3-4 were nothing to write home about. The last 2 have been very good though. I think he's a good candidate, no clue if he's interested though
-
Agreed, but who is setting the rules on the process, which some of might not follow a traditional route?
-
Curious if this is an athletic department decision or comes from Twamley. On the surface, it seems frustrating either way.
-
Pretty sure the state changed the rules on what has to be released for that. Maybe finalists only or something? Even then, a decision will be made before any FOIA request is fulfilled. Because he's a professional and handling things in the right way. And people notice that. Here is his quote on it:
-
I wouldn't put that as anywhere near a guarantee. And as much as I like the current OC, I want the new HC to build his own staff.
-
Must be targeting a lower level if he's going to play 2 more years. If he dropped to a part-time student this semester, it wouldn't count against his D2 eligibility clock.
-
I'd be curious on what the criteria looks like this time vs. last time. The minimum requirements are all pretty standard outside of the 8 year requirement. Preferred requirements don't mean a whole lot, but it does make it easier to weed out applicants.
-
No argument on what he accomplished at EWU. It is the last statement (along with lack of ties to this region) that has me concerned. I would assume that his connection to the AD is the only reason he's being mentioned as a candidate (which is a fair reason he is being included). Fair to say something similar about Schmidt, his connection to UND is likely the only reason he would even consider it. Still think his time away, a very successful run under DeBoer, is a huge positive.
-
And what connections does have to recruiting the Midwest where all those lineman are? Hasn't Vigen just brought a MVFC flavor to Montana State instead of trying to adjust to the Big Sky?
-
This is the way. This isn't going to be an internal hire of someone on staff. And whoever it is, is likely bringing in pretty much a whole new staff.
-
Seems like someone who learned with him/under him for 8 years and would likely get his endorsement should at least be considered. He did but wanted to call plays. My question on him is how has he been at Bemidji since 2000? What ability/connections would he have to fill out a staff? I don't know what their roster looks like but what does his recruiting experience look like. Definitely an intriguing name and every candidate is going to have some questions on their resume, those are just the ones that stick out to me.
-
I think he's an option. I also think by naming an interim, this is going to drag out longer than any of us want and they don't know who the guy is yet. I am hoping I'm wrong and it moves fast regardless of who it is. But I'm concerned the longer it takes, the more damage is done.
-
I guess you got it all figured out. Might as well announce it tomorrow.
-
So you're choices are someone who's in their 50's, his best years were a decade ago and has struggled since or someone who has been at the same place since before any current players were even born (2000, which is honestly unreal in a multiple of ways). Again, both are worth consideration but they sure aren't hitting your self imposed criteria of up and comers or someone who is moving up the ranks quickly and would look to do the same at UND.
-
Not even close to accurate. If Schmidt didn't have connections to UND and there was an opportunity to look at someone with P5 coordinator experience from a team that was in the semis for the CFP, turned down going to the SEC in order to further their career and now are looking for a HC job, I would hope that is someone that would be a serious candidate.
